There is depending on the server. The one I was apart of had wanted posters, and a bounty hunter system near the end of my stay. (I ran a bounty hunter's guild) But the big issue is how butthurt cops will always get. No matter how well you roleplay, do the situations, or whatever. If the criminals win to much, the cops will throw a hissyfit or stop being cops.

The ambush COULD have been interesting if they actually like, roleplayed? From the sheriff POV it would've been fine if they actually said something in-game that hinted at a reasonable motive. There's also a point about being a good sport in RP and actually trying to foster RP, like ambush the sheriff in a way that he isn't instantly knocked out but has a chance to speak. Maybe not as realistic but that's kinda why everyone is there... to roleplay... I know firsthand how funny it is to goof around on RP servers with a friend while giggling on discord but to say it's RP is a stretch. You're right though that even with good RP they might've been revenge banned if it was unexpected, some RPers have the biggest egos and can't allow their characters to take a single L even if it sets up for a cool story

@@elsosagaming Almost like you're dealing with other players and they want to have fun as well. Weird concept. If you wanna do an ambush or something you can, but just... roleplay... communicate... It's sort of an unwritten rule in RP that every character values their life as if they were a person, you can't just randomly attack people until you're put down like a rabid dog. Mechanically you can, but it's just not interesting or realistic. If you just want to live out a one-dimensional power fantasy maybe do it offline where NPCs are gonna be totally shocked and haven't seen it 100 times before

I think gupp's actually trying to rp a little at first, the guy that rdm'ed him at the saloon might of had an ooc reason but I didn't see any obvious ic reason to tackle and choke him like that. Even if his character was wearing an odd outfit, you wouldn't do that to someone wearing something weird irl, so I don't blame gupp for getting just as rough after the first rdm.

Another goldmine of "RP" servers that I found is Arma 3 RP servers. Not Altis Life, which is just your regular DarkRP but the ones where they try to roleplay a true military. The whole server is usually a power trip for people in high positions who make you salute, march around the base, sit in offices all day, etc etc. Last time we joined one and tried to actually take part in PvE war, we got restrained for not checking in with high ranking officer, thrown in jail and guarded by three people who just sat there doing nothing for nearly half an hour. We abused dance animations and constantly unlocked the cell which got the guards super riled up, but they couldn't do anything (orders and all). We then claimed that we've been assigned to the base by accident and are unfit for military service, which led to another half an hour of people doing all sorts of paperwork (arma 3 btw) on us and finally banning us from the server (court martialed). How these people get any fun from sitting in offices and doing virtual paperwork is beyond me.

I played one of these around 10 years ago. The paperwork and tests to join the police force, oof like 4 hours where most of them were standing in line. I had more fun with the original gmod RPs, where you just hid money printers somewhere, made a mafia base and every now and then robbed the bank or kidnapped the mayor.

@@TheHarcipoter these still exist and are where I go back to nowadays. I spent 16 months in Red Dead RP, and ran a bounty hunter's guild at the end of it all. I get it, you get an ego boost from players knowing your character. Randoms would "Oh that's the bounty hunters!" or all this other shit. You really do get to live a different life sometimes and enjoy the perks of becoming a known entity for your roleplay. Especially if you do a lot of real life stuff like D&D or stuff that makes you good at being a character. Then the cringe kicks in. People crying over lost gear. Real life drama over in character tom foolery. People unable to separate themselves from their own content. The sexting. The people who don't touch grass literally LOSING IT constantly. The cops that crave power trips, and the "realism" aspects. (Sitting in prison for 12 hours cause you got arrested or something) All that ruins the game to the core and is why I'll never go back no matter how much I miss it.

As someone who played for 16 months: You're exactly right. They're places for people to form characters and really get a nice ego boost. Issue is the people that have no idea how to separate themselves from the character they are portraying. Most either become whiny losers who cry 24/7 or main character syndrome which leads right back to the crying. So many people can't just take an L and move on with their day. The amount of times I got reported and had to show why it was a good RP and the other person is just a bitch is outrageous. I had like 35gb of recordings I had to save just to not get banned for being a good criminal.

Like others have mentioned, the most likely reason is that there was not in character rp that an ambush might be happening. Saying something like "I can't remember if it was up or down river from here, lets split up and look..." As much as RP is often built around stories and events, it's overall goal is usually to acheive something that feels like it could be a movie or an episode of a TV show. But to be fair, this is probably a public server that deal with fairly consistent trolling, I think gupp was overall one of the less extreme examples of a troll, but they probably saw his outfit and made some assumptions about his intentions even before trying to RP with him.
