I don't know why some people complain about the ending. This is just a masterpiece. When they cry series have original story. Sometimes is fantasy and sometimes is realistic. All series don't have a happy ending. This time was realistic and sad but with love in the end. WITHOUT LOVE IT CAN'T BE SEEN.

Long ago I posted a comment that now I totally regret, I had not even read the entire novel and just made some assumptions on the ending based on vague half-spoilers. Now i've finished it, and I cried like a bitch. I understand now what was that thing more important than the truth... or rather, that despite the cruelty of the facts, deep down everyone wished that things could be happier than they were, and that alone makes it the truth of their hearts. As long as she could have faith in that, the Red Truth would not shackle her soul anymore, and the memory of her loved ones would be saved from hell to reach the Golden Land --- There are more things that make me reflect upon it more but... I'm just glad that I could finally see the end of this story by myself.

The true nature of magic is a gentle embellishment. It can take a sad event and make it look happy. But when you take away the magic, you get a tragedy where the entire Ushiromiya family died except for Eva and Battler. The games may have been a wild fun roller coaster ride, but once the true nature of magic is revealed, the player should realize that there can be no truly happy ending in reality. But this IS a happy ending for fantasy.

@Skyrius Well if we look at the ending from a real perspective, then it is happy since Ange finally reunites with Battler, no matter his condition, she just wanted for him to be alive. Furthermore, the truth of that day is hidden thanks to Hachijo, what was it that happened to the characters from the cat box? I have no idea since they seem to disappear in the City of Books, but they are all reunited in the golden land. Did Ange become a game master and invite Battler because she is a witch?

@WolfUrameshi Battler had an accident before he met Hachijo Ikuko (the writer). What he can remember was just that his age is 18, n then he's named Toya (18 in Japanese). Ofc, he regained his memory gradually, but it looks like that the accident has damaged his brain, n he kept thinking that Battler isn't him, though he has his memory. N he's afraid that someday "Toya" will die because of this memory. He's afraid of being Battler. Hmm... I think probably it's kinda personality disorder :)

How fitting an ending this is. It's sad everyone else died. Although Beato and Battler tried to commit suicide together, only one of them succeeded. Battler, growing into old age while regaining his memories and writing the stories, could finally go to the Golden Land to be with Beato and everyone else... together... forever... I keep watching when Battler and Beato go to drown together.. So.. sad.. Then I watch this, where they end up in the Golden Land... Couldn't ask for a better ending.

Well, the point is while Rika's journey was 2 find miracle 2 escape from her fate, Ange's purpose is 2 find the truth. I hope people could understand that Higurashi n Umineko are different, n trying 2 give us different messages. What's the point of Umineko if it would be the same as Higurashi? Umineko is not sad at all. Maybe happiness is hard to see when pains r there so much. N I'm so happy when Ange at last could see it. Even without seeing the picture, I know that she was smiling :)

@buntado6 Personally, I think its the exact opposite... In my opinion, Umineko's message is that finding happiness is much more important than the tragic truth itself. Reality doesn't mean anything so long as you have love. Higurashi was also similar. Rika could of been a creepy little girl who imagined everything, or it could of all been real. We never did open the cat box to figure that out, but in the end, the only important thing was that Rika finally had her happiness. Inception anyone?

@EerieIceMage I thought that the Beato and Battler scene of October 6th 1986 was an illusion, and that there were 2 Battlers, one who went down with Beato (Ushiromiya Battler) and the other who became Tohya. I have understood everything, even that the 2 endings are not the same and cannot connect. However the final reunion, the one where Ange gathers all the "children" (I have no idea what was happening here) and they are all the characters from the cat box greeting Battler into the golden land.

That day Ange, Hachijo Toya and Hachijo Ikuko meet there to celebrate Halloween with the kids of the house. After entering inside the house, it is revealed that the hall of the house is a replica of the rokkenjima's mansion hall. And there's even a replica of the Portrait. Hachijo Toya, who is Battler after losing himself, sees this and then he sees there everyone from Rokkenjima.

Basically, the reason she was cruel with Ange is because she wanted Ange to think that she is the culprit. Because she knew that Ange wouldn't withstand the "truth" (of ep 8).

As I see it, though, "Mr. Tohya" with Battler's memories sees the children [of the rebuilt Fukuin House] in the replica of the mansion's hall.. And this will have nothing to do with Ange, of course, because this is just Battler. Or Tohya. I guess Battler's memories finally feel at home in Tohya's head as he "sees" the characters from the Golden Land. This is all in his head.

Perhaps with how they've been going interactive with their most recent creations (EP.8 & Ougon Musou Kyoku), we may be in for yet another interactive surprise where it allows us to place ourselves in Rokkenjima. My reasoning for this is from Bernkastel talking to the reader at one point, telling US not to bore her."

@Hinonokaze I think so. Even if Ryukishi would probably make such like "Rei" or u know, Higurashi has many kind of mangas out there, too, maybe Ryukishi will make another story for Umineko. I found that many people who are disappointed w/ this end are hoping for another story. But, if Higurashi Kai's last episode was the best ending 4 Higurashi, then even there would be another story, this end is the best ending 4 Umineko that I wouldn't allow anyone to disgrace (Oh hey I said it :) Hehehe)

@willardhwright And according to Eva, this was better for her to think that she may have killed her relatives, rather than knowing that Kyrie said that she always hated Ange, that Kyrie and Rudolf are killers, and that even Battler isn't so perfect (even if he didn't kill anyone). So, for the sake of Ange, she decided that this will be her burden and she took responsability for everything, hiding the truth. I hated Eva for a while, but I must admit that this was... wow.

In any case, it is easy to create a theory where Eva suvive by killing kyrie at the very end (nd the other one was probably already dead),so it wouldn't be a problem, but yeah. it was only a possibility among others in ep7.
