I would agree. The orchestral tenor seemed to hold its own across all selections, & sounded particularly good playing the high notes in Bolero...but could also be used in jazz. That may also reflect the fact that it's an Edwards. It would be interesting to know what make/model the "Jazz Trombone" is. George, Canada...

@George Schaut that's what I do. I use my orchestral tenor (benge 165f) for all occasions unless I need an extremely bright sound, then I use my jazz tenor (Buffet (don't know the model or age, records of the serial number was destroyed in a fire))

The bass sackbut and the alto suffered a lot (although the sackbut more so), since most of these excerpts aren't really meant for them. The PBone is really just to mess around or teach someone who can't lift a brass peashooter. Between the orchestral tenor (large bore, I presume) and the jazz horn, it depends a bit on the chosen music, as it was pretty close in Bolero, but the orchestral tenor sounded better in general. Overall, I'd rank the orchestral tenor first, with the jazz horn a bit behind. I'd rank the alto after, then the bass sackbut, then finally the PBone.

Honestly, Bolero on a smaller bore horn is probably closer to what Ravel was hearing in his head. Plastic is great for those outdoor gigs on freezing days...but suck otherwise. Love the Bass Sackbut.....would love to hear some typical Bass Sackbut parts on it, conforming to the horn...likewise for the Alto....which sounds great but isn't typical for those pieces.... The Orchestral horn is the one you seem most comfortable on...and sounds the best as a result.

That bass sackbut is not worth 10k, more like 1-2K max. It's an old cheap model that is built more like a modern trombone with a small bell and pitched in F, rather than a proper bass sackbut. Those were not good horns and don't sound good. It's also never going to sound good if you play it poorly and try to blast through it like a King 2B....

Fun video, but obviously no fair comparison to be had between any of these 😂 The Sackbut and the Alto are mainly gonna be that expensive because they're rare and sort of hard to find, especially the Sackbut. An alto trombone is not the most unusual thing but I imagine you pay a premium just for the sort of peculiarity of it no matter the quality. And obviously a jazz trombone is going to be less expensive than a concert trombone just because of the simpler construction, not having that rotary valve. The only sort of fair comparison is between the jazz trombone and the plastic one because the basic construction is similar. And yeah, the plastic one does sound pretty horrible 😂 but fair enough for 200$, still good for like dumb open-air folk festivals and the like where you have to schlepp the instrument around the whole day and having this super light thing is really great, and the sound quality doesn't really matter that much.

hmm... The plastic trombone's notes are less clearly cut, instead sounding somewhat muddy and melted. The alto is a failure, the orchestral is mellow yet powerful, the jazz bright, and the sackbut the darkest, richest thingy I ever heard

Kind of a misleading thing by saying the "differece betweetn cheap and expensive". If you were really going to do that you you should at least be using the same type of trombone. All of these horns are for completely different purposes playing wise besides the plastic one which is just crap lol. Sure your edwards is gonna sound great on orchestral music, but its not going to sound "correct" playing jazz with it compared to the 6H it looks like you're using
