Thank you for the insight! I was told not to transcribe jj and Curtis because they were single tonguers! Probably because my teacher (who is an incredible musician and teacher) is a saxophonist and wanted me to sound like sax. But now that I'm out of school, I say F it! I'm going to transcribe the trombonists I grew up listening to all I want! I have also been discovering "th" tonguing as apposed to classical legato tonguing that I was tought. It's nice to know that others have had that same experience.

I'm a huge fan of Bob Brookmeyer, JJ Johnson, Curtis Fuller, Julian Priester, Steve Turre, Kai Winding, Vincent Gardner and so on but my knowledge is still rather limited on Trombonists. Also, Javier, the guy you mentioned, is amazing, if you could recommend some close to that hard bop style

Hey! I'm transcribing JJ Johnson's Laura solo right now and this really helped out with mimicking his sound and phrasing. I'm no where near close to getting the cut time section down LOL but I will definitely attempt to double tongue it

Awesome, that’s a great solo (and tune)! As it turns out, J.J. used something that was closer to a doodle tongue, although he only used it when needed. Anyway, as long as you get clarity (especially for doodle) and smoothness (especially for double), you can’t really go wrong. Good luck!

I really enjoyed this video. By the way, I love my Conn 88H. I'm working on JJ's Coffee Pot and I have to doodle tongue to get around it at JJ's tempo. I'm playing a King 3B right now. I love it. I appreciate your insights. I'm going to check with my friend Paul Brewer who is a JJ all the way kind of guy on the whole tonguing thing.

Glad you enjoyed it! That’s a tough solo for sure (as are many of his solos, despite the ease of sound). As it turns out, JJ in fact doodles and he even mentioned this in an interview with David Baker, so the mystery is cleared (for myself lol). Good luck with the solo and have fun learning it!
