Great video, but there where 2 other flotilla sister ships in the dutch navy, hr ms flores and hr ms soemba. Also known as the dutch terrible twins. Both commissioned in 1924. They maneged to fire of 900 shots in 4 hours, witch was quit the achievement considerd the 3 cannons where loaded by hand. And where quit accurate considered that they where guided thru scout planes. They fired so fast that the mortars wobled out of the barrels wich resulted in a ryhm to get new or donor barrels atleast for the soemba. Both survived far bepnd ww2 if im not mistaken the soemba was scrapped in 1980 as the last one of the 2 ( might be wrong) but they where flotilla gunboats and later classified as cruisers.

Only 2, de Ruyter and Java, were sunk in Java Sea, Tromp, Van Heemskerk and Sumatra served with the Royal Navy.

Dutch ships did have a big atraction to bombs and torpedos most if not all where sunk that way . few to none by gunfire. The tromp class whas quite succesfull one of the most reported sunk ships . the lighter armour but better internal protection actualy was verry good it got hit 11 times and was still operational. Also the ship class was verry modern as it was more powerfull than both the Java and the De Ruyter. classes. The hull design was ideal to have many different conversions ,just 23 meters longer than the Gerald Callenburgh class destroyers but same profile . there had been 2 plans for the ship 6x 150 mm guns (note the dutch shells where significantly heavier in charges and shell weight but with the same amount of velocity if not faster than their british counterparts.. and one option for an 8 gun - 120 mm in twin turrets. The Heemskerk was to linkup with the Abda fleet but after the battle of java sea diverted to other theaters of war. The description for flotila leader was also the official description for the de ruyter class. later reclasified as light cruiser. But with the dutch reamament program and clasification system, there would be a 3 battle cruiser , 6 cruisers (heavy- and light) 3 flotila leaders 28 destroyers. 36 submarines. the de ruyter would tromp and heemskerck would have been reclasified as flotilla leaders again. and their spots replaced by 6 heavy and light cruisers.

Look at their tonnage - for 3350t it's a lot of bang per ton and consider these ships "destroyer flotilla leaders" and they are well-suited. Think also of their intended opponents - Japanese destroyers and light cruisers, which they outgun and also out-armor. The NL military archive has all the blueprints available online so ignore the Wikipedia-like sources, they are mostly wrong. Armored box was 25mm-30mm deck, 15mm+30mm belt (outer and inner box walls), 25mm-20mm CT, 25mm front gun shield. Here is an armor diagram from that Netherlands military archive if anyone is interested (you can't link directly to the NL archive document so I copied it here): pangea-systems.com/wwiiws/netherlands/navy/tromp/NL-HaNA_4.MST_3504-klein.jpg I am trying to find good reference about the depth charge racks/throwers' location that was mentioned in the video. I've seen some pics of racks on Jacob but nothing with enough detail on Tromp. AAA and ASW changed several times on these ships from blueprint to the end of the war but I'm trying to determine their exact config in early 1942 (during the Japanese attack on NEI).
