Tromso is a mid-sized city located well above the Arctic Circle and is to all intents and purposes Norway's 'Gateway to the Arctic'. This picturesque fishing port is adorned with fishing boats, ferries and seacraft of all sorts as it faces the sea. It is also 'crowned' by a beautiful 1,200 m plus year-round -snowy mountain overlooking the city and of which the locals are understandably proud. Tromso is also the city home of many of the traditional reindeer herding people, the Sami, many of whom have become urbanized. It is also famous in the dark Arctic winter months for its magnificent viewing of the Northern Lights. Truly, Tromso is magnificent and is one of Norway's best Arctic gems.
