Update: I see a handful of people asking about overheating. If you let the drone sit plugged in, yes it will overheat. Even with a full sized O3/Air unit/ almost any VTX, If you plug it in and just let it sit there, after a while it will start to overheat since there's no airflow lol. A Few days ago I installed this Naked O3 in a QAV nano (2") build and have flown it multiple times with no issues. Keep in mind the QAV pro frames are extremely open and allow a lot of airflow. Also worth mentioning, once I plug in a battery the drone is in the air within 20 seconds or so. With that said, I haven't seen an overheating warning with this Naked O3 yet. If you use this in a more enclosed frame where the Air unit doesn't get airflow I could see it easily overheating.

Little question tho, you apparently waited 3 min to take off on the LR4 review , how did you manage the heat while waiting for the gps to get a good signal ? Thank you for all your work my good sir
@TRONCATFPV Жыл бұрын
@@B4LOoO on a drone like the LR4 I did that because it needs to get satellite lock. You can also just plug in USB to get sat lock so your VTX doesnt potentially overheat.

Great content. To everyone worried about overheating, this is exactly what happened with the vistas and the naked vistas when they came out. They just need airflow, and they wont overheat. If you're flying, there's nothing to be worried about.

Isn't the exposed thermal paste going to just attract dust and trash, eventually making the o3 overheat even more?

Excellent instructions and information for how to do this work. I am wondering though, how much durability is lost due to this conversion? I can imagine some scenarios where the change would be minimal - that would be in a drone that really does an outstanding job of protecting the camera and air unit. Dropping 19 grams could be a real difference maker for some builds. But that is the tough question - what are your goals? A sub 250g quad? A high performance over all, or a tough and durable setup... these optimization questions are not easy, and it is easy to be tricked, or not be able to take into account all of the variables that will be a part of how it is used.
@genjitsu74483 ай бұрын
i have a question - I do see your post on the topic of heating but I still have some questions. I am wondering if since the thermal paste has been removed and some of the heat sink plates are also removed did this cause any problems (you do not indicate any) You mention the good airflow on the frame, that makes sense. But I wonder if there is something that could be improved... or is it simply fine and it runs without any problems, then OK nothing to fix. Any chance you took thermal values before and after? The reason I am asking is because of this - On my 2Fiddy I added a heat sink to the DJI vista air unit and to make sure I got the most out of it i used thermal paste and a thermal pad between the air unit and the heat sink. The heat sink was the one from IFlight designed for use with the 03. With very minor mods it also can fit the vista's. BUT i am much more of a builder than a flyer - so i do not have use or flight data on how warm the air units were getting before I added this modified heat sink - because I have not flown this quad yet... And I have questions - I mean is the heat sink even on the right side of the housing to do anything of value? - that is to say is one side of the housing typically warmer than the other? Should the vista be flipped over? Or perhaps it needs, or could benefit from heatsinks on both sides of the housing. Why not? Adds a bit of height but with some creative design decisions it can be integrated very nicely. I guess the question is this - is it going to run cooler in the naked configuration because of the improved air flow around the PCB's or would it stay cooler if we were using well designed heat sinks??? And sorry for the long post, I hope you had the time to read. Cheers!

Instead of overheating and shutting down, they should make a feedback loop to drop the clock speed and number of computations per second. That would be a much more elegant way of solving the issue.

I think removing the radiators will cause overheating. The previous comment confirms my speculation. Thanks for showing the process. I don't think it's worth it. I'm not undressing the o3.
@TRONCATFPV Жыл бұрын
Of course if you plug in the drone and let it just sit there it will overheat. I have mine installed in a QAV nano where it gets great airflow and I haven't had any overheating warnings. It performs very well on the right build. On a build with minimal airflow I could see having problems.

i am curious how much flight time will a mod like this actually give you? no estimates if you hover in one spot until battery is done. but real world scenario. 30 seconds? a minute? or 5 min? what are we talking? smallest quad i own is 4" so saving 15gramms will give me zero advantage. i do understand every gramm counts but how much?
@willpowerfpv3246 Жыл бұрын
As you've said, it entirely depends on the craft. I ordered the same kit to shave 20 total g off of the mobula 8 03, because it flies incredibly heavy right now. It's 80 g dry, so removing 20 g from it, is a significant almost 25% weight reduction. That will not only increase performance but also flight time. I put a naked Vista in a 5-inch before, because I was trying to save as much weight as possible for an experiment. In that case, the weight savings were negligible, so I also ended up adding a bunch of LEDs to offset the weight of the extra Vista parts, after I realized that I wasn't blown away by the 9 g I saved. This is going to be fantastic for micros 3in and below, but would probably also be helpful if you were doing a sub 250 cinewhoop or a little full featured long range. Will never get down into walksnail or hd0 territory, but this is almost the exact same weight as a naked Vista with the OG DJI cam. To me, this is totally acceptable weight for the best video feed in existence. 😁🤙🏻
@cloudpandarism2627 Жыл бұрын
@@willpowerfpv3246 plus best video quality in existence right now. yes when total quad weight is 80g it makes alot more sense of course. as i said i mever flew anything super lightweight yet. i like raw power but finessing every gramm of weight off for better performance looks interesting too. right now lipos are the biggest weight i guess. using lightweight HV lipos should also help. same for higher voltage. cable size can be reduced alot. i recently saw that on my electric paramotor project where i could reduce weight over 1,5kg just by increasing voltage to 24s and change all 6AWG wires + plugs to 8AWG and much smaller plugs. its interesting how much ideas came out by trying to save weight. back to the O3. did you already test fly it? how the O3 handles heat without thermal paste now? i guess you dont need full VTX power anymore when you dont need to fly that tiny quad into clouds?
@TRONCATFPV Жыл бұрын
@willpowerfpv3246 worded it pretty good. It largely depends on the build. I have mine in a sub 250g 2" cinewhoop that has a lot of airflow. That 20g took the weight of the drone to 189g which now allows me to put a naked GoPro 11 on board and STILL be under 250g w/ a 4s lipo. Hyped.
