Rare Blue PSP Damaged by Repair Shop - Let's Fix It! I paid $80 for this blue PSP that, according to the seller, a repair shop tried to repair by replacing the screen but they only succeeded in damaging it further. Initially the PSP won't even turn on and I found it wasn't put back together correctly. There were also things that needed to be fixed on the motherboard before I could bring this handheld back to life.

That ribbon cable connector is a total pain. It's extremely fragile. I did the exact same mistake when reassembling my old PSP. Had to buy a new (used) one because I had no tools to fix it at the time. I kinda got "PTSD" from that and I'm constantly afraid to even disassemble a PSP anymore... Great video as always, Steve. I think you could just solder it back together, probably I guess, or just resort to absolutely carefully prob with like some precise tool to take off the ribbon cables and hope they are not broken then absolutely carefully with a precise tool cut off the old ribbon cable things on the new display then solder the totally working ones onto it
@ivorza

@@dogeinator6164 Unfortunately I had no way of fixing it at the time. All I had was a screwdriver and nothing else. Besides the damage was on the board connector itself. I tried with another screen I had laying around but there was no saving that one. Well, at least not with the tools at my disposal hahah

I really enjoy watching videos where the technician really takes care to, well, for one, repair it the right way, but putting it back together EXACTLY as it was originally designed. No missing screws or broken parts, connectors etc just rigged back together instead of fixing it correctly. Thanks Steve, a pleasure to watch your videos.

You would hope not and that they would do the right thing but you never know unfortunately. Guess it depends on the store and who they dealt with. I’ve never dealt with a repair shop but From watching the channel it seems like it can be very hit or miss. On if they’re going to be honest or not and if they’re even able to do a repair at all.

For the second part. You can create a shim out of thin plastic and wedge it in to create presure against pins. Must be exact width as the ribbon cable. It must be very thin plastic just enough to shim in. And create a wedge and push ribbon toward pins, it works very well when locking tabs get broken off

Uh, that reminds me of the PSP repair I did a few months ago. Screen didn't work correctly, ordered a new screen, that came broken (physically broken) and the shop didn't want to replace or refund it ("can't you try to install it and see if it works?" "it is cracked, dammit!"). Ordered a second screen from a different seller (but obviously from the same factory), and while this screen works (in the sense you get the image on the screen) there's a visible vertical line. But I don't have the nerves to spend money on another screen right now.

I see many time that the big "reveal" of whether the fix is working or not is done only after reassembling completely the device... but that is clearly not how it was done, you surely tested the fix before re-assembling the console (as you did while troubleshooting) - after so many fixes it would be a big gamble to fully reassemble the console w/o testing it. Why not showing the way it is ? It would not spoil the end and it would just be more realistic. Thanks for your great videos, I'm learning a lot!

Understandable. I’m guilty of that exact procedure myself.

I don't know in US, but I'm sure the vibrant blue one is also available in Europe, cause I have an identical one bought here in Italy.

We got mostly black ones because they refused to believe that the only people buying them were not just teenage boys.

The last time I needed to replace a fuse was on my refrigerator's PCB board. Or, more like solder a new fuse (same rating) in parallel with the blown fuse since the usual "fix" is to replace the PCB board ($200+).

Have you tried hot tweezers I’m wondering how well or poor they work I use a Hakko soldering station and have been eyeing a pair of hot tweezers but I am skeptical about them

I have. I still have them. I just don't use them much. I normally prefer just using hot air but tweezers do come in handy for certain jobs.

That plastic flap coming off of ribbon connectors is my biggest nightmare. I did that to my New 3DS XL and I had to get it sent off to a repair shop on eBay because I don’t have the experience to put a new connector on

When these connector taps get lose that hell man. Been there and its also not eassy to resolder a new one because its a long connector with many legs that is also from plastic.

Very insightful, thank you for the video! I have a PSP (model 2004) which works fine but doesn't charge via charging port. It charges via USB but as you probably know, USB charge in this PSP works only if the device is on. So, if the battery dies fully, I am unable to charge it via USB as the device is off. Then I need to charge the battery externally. I have replaced the charging port with a new one, it didn't help. I know the charger works as I tested it with another PSP. What do you think the problem might be? Thank you in advance!
