The most intimidating March the gren guard have to offer, my favorite! The general Mitchell

What a sight!! The precision moves of the drum Majors with their Maces' without verbal command. The full stride precision band marching in perfect time. Having played in a marching band I can tell you that physical conditioning is a must if you are to play every step of the way. The massed bands have pride written all over them, and rightly so. They are wonderful musicians and a credit to crown and country.

Thanks for posting this top quality clip. Love watching the Trooping of The Colours. I have been watching it since the early 80's when I was a kid.

Great clip of the massed drum majors changing from the carry to the trail, then the state walk.

Being a marching bass trombonist myself, I must say that was rather excellent

Tremendous quality audio and vid! Well done! Remarkable the bands can play "General Mitchell" so expertly while marching...it's quite a hard blow.

There is not a more impressive sight than the guards bands marching 20 abreast down the mall and leaving no doubt in anyones mind what General Mitchell March is supposed to sound like. Thanks Big Drum for another great video posting. Next time you see the Queen tell her I said belated happy birthday from Durant Oklahoma. USA

@HMservant i think you are right about HRH The Duke of Edinburgh, but i think the chap in the bowler is the Grenadier Guards/Household Division/Queens Company Taylor, as he is part of the regiment, and plays a very large role!

@Josh1Joshua1 Yes, that would make sense, although I've never seen the Company Tailor in the march before.

@SethP666 I'm guessing the chap seated in the carriage/buggy is HRH The Duke of Edinburgh, but as for the mounted chap in the bowler I'm guessing he's the Chairman/President of the Royal British Legion. Hope this helps =).

@bgrobin66 To answer your question. It was purely an accounting excercise. As the horses are govement owwned, they wanted to know when a horse was no longer alive.

@tralens What the Massed Bands play sounds a bit like the Theme for the Teddy Bear's Picnic! Although I know it is not.

I noticed the 2 battle axes in the rear of the mounted guards. What was the purpose of branding the horses hooves and then cutting the hoof off horses killed in battle?

If this march had taken place in a country that isn't Great Britain I'd readily believe it to be the Victory March of occupation after receiving the country's Head-of-State's unconditional surrender!!

@chrkirschbaum Hi Christian. Ruhrig [Heritage Encyclopedia of Band Music] lists three publishers: Bandleader (arr. Heming), Bovaco, and Gay (1889). BovacoMusic has a contact page on the web, but I found nothing on the others. Suggest you contact one of the bands direct e.g. Band of the Grenadier Guards, Wellington Barracks, London, SE1E 6HQ. Email: LonDistHdiv-GRENGDSBand-BSec@mod.uk. The Grenadiers Band also has a Facebook site. I am sure they will happily help. Good luck and best wishes.

@tralens I was standing in the wrong place the previous week but was luckier at the second rehearsal. The bands look and sound magnificent here. Do you know what the mounted bands are playing at the start of this clip?
