I have a German roof conversion on my Troopy from Custom Campers and yes the Alucab / Aluinnovation variant with the easy way to pull the bed down and everything is ready is nice. BUT by stacking the bed away you have FIRST of all lots of room in the front to throw pillows and blankets away to the front and its stored. SECOND you gain lots of head room in the back. Hence two people can actually sit in the back while the roof is closed. Awesome in European rainy days. THIRD the stacking is actually not that bothersome. Takes maybe only 10s longer. Anyways awesome to have yet another open opinion about the roof conversions from you Andrew!
@johnhowell61392 жыл бұрын
I agree completely! The ability to sit in the back in comfort with the roof down is a deal maker. This is partly as a result of a slight increase in height and partly as a result of the bed setup. Setting up the bed is not a big issue. How about Alucab or Mulgo offering this setup as an option?

To be truthful, brand means very little to me. I like 4wds for what they can give me, not what badge is on the front. For example, I love Range Rovers, but the new Defender leaves me stone cold. Ineos is neither here nor there. Toyota makes some good cars, but the Land Cruiser 300 is the ugliest thing they've ever built, and the 70-series is practical but very flawed, while the Troopy is brilliant even though it shares the same flaws. See. It's not the brand that matters. And the G-Wagon is awful . . . unless its a 461 series. Best off-roader I ever owned.

One thing no one ever talks about is the tent canvas. If it gets damaged can it be replaced? Also what's the drainage like, is there risk of it going mouldy? Roof top tents are notorious for condensation forming under the mattress which leads to mould. Does this happen in the roof top conversions also?

So clearly a Grenadier is soon in the offing based on closing video mutterings? A goal for a roof conversion there might be to hinge the overhead switch panel if the front sloping portion of roof really needs cutting out, else leave it in place and span over it ? Looking at the massively reassuringly robust Grenadier roof structure in factory footage, I suspect there will be some rules anyway restricting the scale of can opener deployment to preserve its likely excellent crashworthiness and rollover strength. Characteristics perhaps worth retaining when you see soberingly what happens to old Defenders when TSHTF.

Funny, I don't think there is a single manufacturer of roof tents or conversions such as these who supplies a comfortable matress. As it is extremely important to us to keep our bedding in the tent when we fold it (for all the same reasons that Andrew raves about during set up), we added a self inflating air matress under the uncomfortable matress supplied in our RTT by Autohome. It needs to be deflated, though, and just folding the tent does not work for this. So we use our compressor from the intake side. It only adds about a minute to the packing/leaving routine, and one way valves in the hoses make it very easy to use. BTW Andrew, when starting with a bed that is 130cm or less wide for a couple, every additional year of age over the age of 30 requires exponentially increasing the width of the matress if you are to be comfortable. My wife and I are about the same age as you 2. We are up to a 160cm wide roof tent :-))

at the moment is the Grenadier even affordable. All said and done a Troopy, Land Rover, Discovery, Grenadier and many others are excellent for their own specified purpose within design constraints. It follows that modifying these vehicles also have design constraints not least GVM cargo load etc. Simply you make your choice of a canvas and paint it to your desire. The problem is when that desire is dreamland. Simply put one gallon does not fit in a pint jug.. As for the bedding/mattress issue why not simply install an inflatable mattress it can be as firm or accommodation as the pressures also could save on dimensional issues in transit. Great review and so fair to all Andrew. Surely it is what we are all about we buy a on size fits all specification then tease torture and extract from it whatever suits our requirements.... the very best of (re)engineering is often extracted that way

my opinion it makes more sense on a van conversion is a 4 wall camper you are limited for space otherwise due to to hinge on the front.. if you wanted 4 people sleeping your would likely need it to go higher than it is at present to keep bonnet clearance as you would be extending out over the bonnet with it supported with leg the only way to get more shoulder width clearance is likely add an exoskeleton roll cage with a portal rood

@GR8Tmate2 жыл бұрын
I’ve been over with my 4 previous 70 builds and I can just say there’s a weight advantage of going alloy & also when you pick your alloy you will be looking at something with a high load rating (esp if you’re doing a GVM upgrade). Gone are the days of busting Alloy wheels where the advantage of having steel (so you could flog it out in the bush with a mallet) was an advantage. IMO, it’s null & void issue and I will be going Alloy again for my 5th & final 78 build. Part of my decision process was wanting to always carry two spares. If you run 285/75 tyres (as a minimum), your not going to bust them. My first 78 did 150k on alloys, my 79 single has done over 450k on its alloys & I had two ther 78’s with a total of 140k…..all on alloys, all always used as travelling vehicles (not daily drivers) & I never busted a modern alloy & I love going rough….my 79 single cab went everywhere & it was HEAVY).

Although I can appreciate the amount of thought and design innovation in creating these vehicles; the ever present elephant in the room is weight.I must have missed the episode where Andrew expressed his disdain for a rugged off road camper set up.A camper could stay with you over the life of several tow vehicles; plus you are free to travel away from your campsite unencumbered with a relatively light vehicle. When you reach home you have a very easily managed town vehicle whilst not having to lug x tonnes of gear around with you.Obviuosly towing over dunes etc is difficult with a trailer but so is the stress on a GVM uprated vehicle loaded to the max. If you are doing several expeditions a year a single vehicle may be the answer ;but for the average explorer I think a towing solution is better.

Andrew: When you looked at the Grenadier, did the back seats fold completely flat? Could you sleep in the back? Since we can’t get the 70 series in the states, I guess I would compare the Grenadier to the Toyota 4-Runner or Jeep Wrangler. Thank you for the information.

No. I don't think you could sleep flat. But then again, this isn't a production example.

No the back seat of the 5seater Grenadier houses batteries and electrical and it doesn’t fold flat. But they are doing a 2 seat version for Australia, not sure if that’s being made available to the US.

How many total volts does your additions to your truck require. Watts are used by mechanical engineers fuel measurements. Electrical engineers use volts.
@4xoverland2 жыл бұрын
Volts x Amps = Watts. Watts is a measurement of energy. Volts is not. Volts is like the speed of water coming out of a pipe. The diameter of the pipe is equivalent to Amps. The amount of water is the Watts. This truck has a 12V system. What changes or can be altered is the amount of energy required and used. I.e. how many Watts.

@@4xoverland Electric Ford Transit is coming to USA. Your market is expanding with van live. Mention the units of Voltage also. Watts are not precise enough for electrical engineers. Watts are heat units of a fuel and Fire Ratings..

@@4xoverland Although I like the comparison, that is not fully correct/accurate. Ampere is like the amount of water going through per second comparable to volume or litres per unit of time (amount of electrical charge per second). That is why a bigger pipe (=thicker cable) can carry more water per second (=more Amps). I think that is what you meant. Volt is then the slope of the pipe making the water run in the first place (letting electricity flow), not the speed. But a steeper slope makes the water run faster. Watt is the measurement for Work=Energy done per second which is called power. To understand Watt you can think of a watermill that only turns if the water has enough volume or runs fast enough to have enough power to run the watermill. You can take a flat slope but huge amounts of water which would have a similar effect of taking a steep slope and little amounts of water. Hence AxV = W (volume of water per second x steepness of slope = power to run watermill).

If the awning doesn’t cover the top of the windows, it is useless as it doesn’t allow you to open the top canvas windows a little to allow air flow, especially when it’s raining. The Quick Pitch RTT does this perfectly and something both ALUCAB Hercules and the ALU-Innovations should look at.

Wonder which company will be the first to make a conversion for the *future of overlanding?* The day you can fit a 2000km-hydro-fuelcell-Trooper-like-EV with diff locked 4x4! Hope I'm not just ashes then ....

Hi Andrew! Great video as always… just thought I’d note… I log on everyday to watch your videos - often refreshing your home page to see if any vids have been uploaded. This video in particular does not feature in your ‘recent uploads’, I happened to stumble across the video as I was going through this playlist. Any tips I can do so I don’t miss any of your videos? Cheers

Awesome vehicle, the only thing I would change is the shape of the sunvisor...it looks practical but doesn't match the shape of the car at all.

OK, so very little difference. How about a cost comparison?
@thabonchu15682 жыл бұрын
I was thinking the same, since I am currently looking at getting one.

Andrew, totally unrelated but is just me or is there a faint noise on the LH channel of your audio. Like a faint alarm clock going off. It not my headphones and only get it when watching some of your content?

Reasons for awning on right hand side ?
@4xoverland2 жыл бұрын
In this case, the kitchen is on the right, so the awning is on the right. I'd be interested to know your reasons for putting it on the left. I know this is common practice, but why? There is no really good reason for it other than pulling off to the side of the road. But who in their right minds would pull over at the side of the road for a lunch? One pulls off the road, and then it doesn't matter. Or have I missed another reason?
@shayneboyle11882 жыл бұрын
@@4xoverland I can think of a few reasons to fit it on the left . Wind on the right hand side of the car is stronger with oncoming traffic etc ( breaking off ) it does happen to all brands . Anyhow I was more interested in your reason simply because I like the idea of it . Easy access to driver's side in rain is one that would suit myself.
