What I love about Downey Jr.'s character is that he is the very first to truly understand what's happened, but because he refuses to break character, he only tries to warn the others in the way his character would in the context of a melodramatic, Hollywood movie, so nobody believes him.

This is one of my favorite movies ever. It's not just a comedy, there is a lot of commentary on stereotyping and discrimination in general, obviously in terms of Ben Stiller playing someone with disability and RDJ in blackface. I love how generally people still love this movie. Someone tried to "cancel" RDJ for blackface a litlle back and all of Black Twitter put that down immediately. There will be no Tropic Thunder slander, ever. LMAO.
@Muck0062 жыл бұрын
Is there REALLY "commentary" about stereotyping and discrimination? They just made funny characters ... and those NEED (in a certain style of humor) EXAGGERATION, which lands you right in the "disability" and "playing blackface" (because that is the visual way to say "method actor") corners. "Commentary" is something serious ... and also includes a conclusion ... which is completely missing from the movie. "JUST HAVE FUN WITH OUTRAGEOUS CHARACTERS ... and dont judge at all", that's the message of the movie!
@12152982 жыл бұрын
@@Muck006 I mean, there is commentary on it: just because commentary is presented in a certain style, be that comedic or otherwise, doesn't mean it's not addressing something. That's what seperates simple parody from satirisation, which this movie does do: I mean, I still remember when the Ancient One in Marvel was getting so much crap because the role was played by a caucasian woman instead of Asian man. Kevin Feige is still getting crap for this 'whitewashing' to this day, to the point he apologised last year despite casting for the role happening almost 9 years ago and he openly said he was trying to avoid stereotyping when he chose the role. Alpa Chino playing the 'straight man' whenever Kirk goes a little too far in his portrayal is a perfect lampshade of how a lot of people view casting in Holywood: "Maybe I just knew I had to represent, because they had one good part for a black man and they gave it to *cRoCoDILe dUnDeE*". Just because it's not a dark and scathing world like the Watchmen, or a corporatocracy and politics angle like The Boys, doesn't mean it isn't a nice distorted mirror of the modern world.
@cristonsloan2 жыл бұрын
@@Muck006 From my understanding of the term, I would disagree with both assertions that commentary must be serious and needs to include a conclusion. My understanding of Commentary is that it draws one's attention to a situation from a perspective that differs from the norm, in an effort to make you view said situation in a fresh and enlightening manner. It is perfectly acceptable to do that and allow the viewer to draw their own conclusions, rather than forcing your own. In fact, it is infinitely more effective to do that, because everyone is more inclined to believe a conclusion to which they themselves have come, rather than one that has been pushed upon them. It is your job as the commentator to highlight that situation in such a manner that the conclusion to which the viewer comes is self-evident, without you having to spell it out for them. And if they come to a different conclusion to yours... well then even better, because the entire purpose of commentary is to provide differing and unique perspectives so as to help us all better understand the objective Truth of a situation. Likewise, it is often far more effective to call attention to a serious situation with comedy that shows an EXAGGERATED viewpoint (yet still within the boundaries of Truth), with the express purpose of driving home the point that is being made, rather than merely pointing it out in a serious tone. Comedy, especially the comedy of this movie, relies on absurdity for its humour and absurdity is one of the most effective means by which to draw attention to a situation that needs to change. When one realises how absurd the truth of any bad situation really is, one can truly appreciate the need for transformation in order for sanity to be restored.

13:16 Well, yeah… the French were in Vietnam before the U.S was, they had the sense to GTFO unlike the U.S did. Something that always bothered me about this scene was how the mine blew the director completely up… landmines aren’t designed to blow dudes completely up, they are more of a psychological weapon and are made to take legs or just feet off. Instead of removing 1 guy off the battlefield now you’ve taken 3 of them off the field, 1 with the missing leg/foot and 2 guys to carry him to the medic. Then that one who’s foot/leg you removed is screaming his head off in pain and everyone is looking at their tough as nails friend crying in pain and now horribly disfigured and never able to play soccer again. That breaks everyone’s will to fight…

I was gonna say that. Like when RDJ says, "You make it home alive" when Ben is getting shot in the back and put up his arms, that's definitely Platoon.

50/50 but that scene they're doing at the beginning, ALL "Platoon" ...later when Speedman loses it, that's a bit more "Apocalypse Now"

Just realized dude in the cowboy hat looks like if Zac Efron lived out in the Midwest and never moved to Hollywood, also kinda sounds similar to the way Zac sounds now…. Side note: I first watched this film in 08 when I was 11 years old. I watched it several times after that, one of my favorite movies ever, top five comedy for me. I never realized that Matthew’s character saved Speedman by taking the money and G5. It’s insane how I didn’t put two and two together. We should all take that choice the Pecker made as a lesson somehow

The funniest part from this reaction was when their baby made the entrance and everything just stop, now that was a performance for a funny award.

What would Tropic Thunder 2 be about? They wrapped up everything in the film. The drug guys coming after the actors? Tugg Speedman trying to make and direct the film, they were making in the first one? Speedman having to hide from rabid PETA members, for killing a panda? I would love to see these guys back together in a film like this one, but how would you pull off a sequel?

Funny, I watched your Ted reaction right before this. One of Giovanni Ribisi and Jack Black’s first roles were as friends on a great early The X-Files episode titled “DPO”.

RDJ also shines in Due Date and both Sherlock Holmes movies. The war film in the beginning was a parody of Platoon

I like when the director just explodes unexpectedly from stepping on the mine. Scared the crap out of me first time I saw it.

Shocking how many KZbinrs react to the brilliant tropic thunder and don’t even get the great film references in the movie 😳

My favorite shot of the movie is one you guys left out of the reaction. When RDJ suddenly looks into the mirror all horrified right after confessing to being a dude dressed up like a dude playing a dude and such.
