Tropical Storm Maria near Japan, Atlantic hurricane update

Tropical Storm Maria remains potent as it moves slowly towards the east coast of Japan. Whilst not as strong as expected, the storm is still a rain and wind threat for a large chunk of northern Honshu, with a very large windfield. Maria is also expected to drop up to 200mm of further rainfall through the next three days.
Elsewhere, a tropical disturbance has a high chance of development in the Central Atlantic, and is expected to sweep through the Lesser Antilles as a tropical storm. Further development into a hurricane is expected to the south of Puerto Rico, with the storm projected to pass over the Dominican Republic. Whether a full recurve will occur is still uncertain, with a chance of impacts for the US East Coast.
Other areas of interest could develop later in the week in the Western Pacific, and Japan could see further impacts along with China and South Korea.
An unusual area of interest is expected to form soon in the Southwest Indian Ocean, and has a fair chance of development later in the week.

WPAC is now 2016 and 2018 combined and a TD southeast of Maria could develop into TS Son-tinh while 91W could become Typhoon Ampil (maybe Dindo). But if we don't get Dindo until August 20, there is a chance that it could be a destructive one for Northern Luzon which is the Late August Curse that happened since 2022 and the storms were Florita (Ma-on) 2022 and Goring (Saola) 2023. But the curse could be broken since its an El Nino to La Nina Transition and there were no Pagasa names that got retired in August. Starting in Mid August, Atlantic and the Pacific will be very active until the month of November.

13:45 02L eventually became Hurricane Arlene, in fact 03L was operationally a Tropical Depression until being upgraded post-analysis to a Tropical Storm.

Possibly not since the death toll was low and damage was above average but not that costly just like hurricane Emily (2005), hurricane Karl (2010) and hurricane Nicole (2022).
