🤣😂 thanks Juan! I noticed there weren't many videos on majesty palms which is weird because they are so common. It was a long video but there was a lot to say about them. I always think it's better to explain everything so there is an understanding of the plant rather than just some quick growing facts that are usually not universal so not helpful to everyone.

Tropical Plant Party yeah agreed. I just bought my second one Majesty from a big box on sale also and got it for 50% off. So I wanted to see if I could grow it in a pot this time until I pick a permanent spot. The first one I’ve had for about 20 years and that thing is about 30/35’ tall now. So I hoping this one will grow the same. But it will obviously take some time. Like the other.

Here in HOT Australia, in summer (gets up to 42+ Celsius ) we use a spray on product called 'Droughtsheild'. It is a bit like sunscreen for plants but they can still breathe, keeps the moisture in - it lasts for the whole summer and the plants grow madly. Previously, the whole garden would be blackened - burnt to a crisp. I'm sure there is a similar product in the US...May keep the palms hydrated.

Depending on the climate you live in if hot they need a.couple buckets twice a week. Three palms drink alot unlike others. It's a ravenea majesty palm.

TIPS I have a Ravenea Majesty Palm Tree indoors and its flourishing. Every 4 days I take it outside and flood it with two full buckets of water that's been sitting out for 2 days to naturally remove the chlorine and let it drain for a few hours then bring in. I also mist tree with warm water 3 times a week. I've fed it Epsom salts added to top layer of soil and mixed it in an inch deep so when watered it all goes through soil. and palm plant food important during growing period/not through Sept to April.. It sits in a west window and it gets bright light all day and maybe 10 minutes of filtered sun just because. Thete have never been spider mites, just centipedes but they dont harm plant and keep the spider mites away. I do know how to eradict them and probably will in time. It's a harmless natural crystal you put on soil which will cut them up. 😰 I replanted it to a 15bunch pot after I purchased it and will keep it in that size for a long time to keep its growth down. These are needy trees to keep alive so good luck. If you have issues fix it please don't throw them away there are not many left in the wild. Pls don't handle roots or ever remove soil to clean roots or you will most likely kill the tree. My tree is 11 feet tall now. I like to pop in now and then to see what others are doing and to maybe offer some advice.

When I first got my palm I spent weeks trying to find how to take care of it. I even went to to site of nursery that grew them. I was still unable to get anyone who could help me. There were roots coming out of the drainage holes. In my other plants that meant root bound. I didn't want to repot because I didn't know what kind of soil to use. Thanks for the help and knowledge. You may have saved it's life.

Thank you, Susan! That isn't a terrible soil for them, that is all they sell up here also. Problem is that the bags are so tiny that it's just cheaper to blend up my own mix. Generally a moisture loving palm really shouldn't be potted in a soil with the word, "cactus" in it's label. Lol!

I haven't tried growing them since I converted my garage to a winter grow space so maybe they'll do better in there.

Your yard/pool area looks so lush and inviting! I'm here to see about the majesty palm, and I want to see IF I can keep on in my greenhouse in winter. I keep it at 50-60f , but since my heater isn't specific about temps, a few times it has gone down to 46f and I can see inside my house when it does and have turned the GH heater up higher. I plan on getting a new heater that I can set a specific temperature on it. I won't be getting one until next spring, when I can bring it home and not have it freeze to death while in my car. I already have 2 hardy palms in there, but, they are hardy to about 10F, maybe 20f now, since they are babies, BUT, anyways, I want to try a majesty palm since they are more delicate looking. Plus, they are everywhere in Big Box stores. If I end up getting all of the plants that I want to next spring/summer, like Crotons, and other zone 9 plants, I will surely keep my GH at close to 55-60f. When the electric bill comes, I'll just have to bend over and take it. Plants are a simply wonderful indulgence, worth it if they are happy and looking great, plus, a treat to see in winter if you can pull it off. These CAN deal with 40sF from what you said, and a dry 40s f in my GH should be okay, although I try and stay in high 50'sf anyway. Even with a heater in my GH, it shouldn't get super dry air inside. maybe I can add a pot of water in front of that GH heater too. Great video, I love how you mentioned how hardy they are, not everybody mentions that kind of thing, just to bring indoors unless you live in Florida, and stuff like that.

For people wanting to grow this outdoors, I’d say a good 9b palm. I’m in 9a, and it survived a good 6 years before dying. It would lose its fronds around 28 degrees F, but the trunk would survive down to around 20. One winter I hit 18 in my yard and that was it for the palm.

The grower's recommendation and Costa Farms recommendation say to keep it in low light conditions indoors, but you say it likes lots of light. What's the truth here?! Already had one plant keel over. It seemed to be browning inside, with new growth, so I put it outside where it got 3 hours or so of morning FL light, and then after I pruned it, it just flopped over.

Get yourselves a huge tub... fill it with water and throw in magnesium sulfate (Epson salts)... dunk your palm in it for 30min. Take out and let drain thoroughly. Do this with your other tropical planters like your ferns... Beautiful green color, nice deep watering, great growth! I do this maybe 2x a season and I have beautiful full foliage!

Hi brenda! I use all purpose slow release, like osmocote and seaweed fertilizer monthly. In the winter I just let it rest indoors and don't do much of anything with them. Adding a few tablespoons of Epsom salt to a gallon or so of water and feeding that every couple of weeks during the summer can help with browning. 😁

I have a Washingtonia Robusta in a 12” pot I’ve had for a few years. I’ve never repotted or really fertilized. I can’t find palm tone in the stores where I live but I just gave it 6 Jobee palm spikes the other day. Looking forward to seeing what that does.

Great video... I bought a majesty palm a couple months ago decent sized but it had some burnt leaves so I’ve trimmed off some. I’ve got it on my front patio and drop a shade on that side off the porch. I also have my Phaleanopsis orchids assorted philodendrons and my monstera deliciousa, and my fiddleleaf fig on that side so they get filtered light in the evening because it’s a Western facing bright light. I also try to mist it atleast once or twice a day so far it’s gotten 3 new frawns. I’m hoping it will grow really good for me along with all my other plants. On the other side of my patio I don’t use a shade but mostly sun loving plants geraniums, jade and hens & chickens and sedums and a some other succulents, and a couple huge opuntia prickly pear cactus also a red oleander bush...they seem to all be thriving!! Keep doin what your doing Really enjoy your video’s. Good content also you make me laugh at times. Hope all is well your way☺️

Tap water sprayed on the undersides of the “leaves” works too. If it grows mold or bugs a 50/50 mix of pinesol and fabuloso sprayed on the dirt fixes it for about 5 months before you need to redo it.

I am also concerned about getting root rot with how frequent you have to water it. I have a potting mix with perlite and drainage at the bottom. I water it with one very large cup and start from the trunk outward. I do have some brown spotting on some of the palms on a frond. It’s a very young frond in respects to the rest of the plant. I wait for about the top inch of soil to go dry and do my watering. This results in watering twice a week. Is this a correct strategy?

I also am in an 11 inch pot that is very deep. I don’t get a lot of water out of the bottom when I water, which adds to the concern of water being trapped and causing rot. EDIT: I actually do get a lot of drainage. Just watered it before I commented this, went down to cook lunch, and came back to a large puddle of dark brown water.

🤣 good! Sounds like drainage isn't an issue. 😁 sounds like you are watering correctly. They wont just drop dead if you let them dry more than just the 1 inch of soil. Can always try and let it go a bit more dry between waterings and see how it does. Can always rehydrate a thirsty plant, but bringing them back from rot is much more difficult process. Brown spots happen, usually just from dry air.

Summers are typically humid here and I hope that will help get a little bit of growth before the winter. I bought it from a nursery in Florida and it clearly has been pruned and cared for rather than the ones I see at my local home improvement stores, although for half of what I paid. I have a frond that is about 3 feet tall coming from the center that is very close to creating new palms. When those come in, it will be a beautiful addition to the house. Hope to get more plants this summer.

I was hoping for some advice. I have 2 Majesty Palms. They came potted together. I repotted them alone and put them in my back yard. They started turning brown after a couple of days. It appeared our hot California sun was to much for them. I moved them under my covered patio where they still get bright light and afternoon sun but their condition has not improved. They had them inside I brought them home and I keep them outside under a shaded umbrella. I live in Northern California and its sunny mostly and currently hot. I just repot them in ceramic larger planters with half palm soil and half potting soil. So far they look good. How long do you think I have to wait to move them to full sun exposure? Hello, Irene! Generally 2 weeks per hour of sunlight is a safe acclimation rate. I rarely have the patience for that and do it 1 week per hour of sunlight and don't normally have any issues. 2 to 3 hours of sun isn't too much, so I would think a 2 to 3 week acclimation would be just fine.

So first of all, thank you for this video!! So helpful. Second, you mention a humidifier could help if placed nearby. What do you think would happen if a few drops of essential oils are in the humidifier (I typically run one for the lovely smells)? Could it damage the palm? Do you think it would effect it at all?

Oh i really don't know. If it is consistent then that could cause problems with clogging the pores on the foliage, but I'd think the amount would be so low that it wouldn't do that. There are also some oils that will kill leaves if the solution is strong enough. This something I'm interested to do some reading on. I'll let you know if I find out anything important.

I actually love the Majesty palms. Only the winds that worry me. Canary islands are zone 12b but alot of palms will hate the very windy conditions.

Hello, I have my Majesty palm for a couple weeks. Indoor plant btw. My question is, are there concerns with fronds overlapping where the leaves intersect? I am a noob to plants, but is overcorwding a concern with this palm? Should I remove fronds to allow others to grow without crowding?

Hey there! Overcrowding within the fronds shouldn't be an issue unless in an extremely humid environment with poor airflow. If that's the case then the potential for fungus to grow is higher, but this is not a common issue for most people. Should be fine. 😊

Thank you for this informative video. I just bought my first Majesty Palm. We have two cats and one of them is already obsessed with the palm and eats the lower leaves - hopefully it won't hurt it too much if it's just on the lower fronds? I know this palm isn't toxic to cats but I don't want my cat to be toxic to the palm!

Not sure if anyone could answer this, but I live in West Texas and just bought this plant. It's about 3 - 4 feet tall. Should I keep it inside with moderate indirect sunlight, or should I keep it outside under a shaded porch where there's relatively no humidity but it'll get much more sunlight.

That's a tough one! I'd keep outside and very well watered, do your best to never let the soil dry out all of the way. They like the heat and even if the air is dry, it will probably grow more with warmth than with room temperatures in the house. If the foliage starts to get brown on the tips, can always pull it inside, or wait and see if it will adapt and put out new growth with less dry tips. There are also products you can use to help lock in the moisture. Wilt pruf and wilt stop will add a waxy layer to outer cuticle of the leaves and help prevent the wind from drying the plant out. Just avoid spraying it on the center spear because it is kind of tacky and glue like and can make it hard for the new frond to develop and open up.

You can, but sometimes that will leave a thin brown line where the cut was made. So it's a matter of what the person would prefer to see. If it's just a little brown on the tips then that might be better to look at than brown lines from where the cuts have been made.

I don’t want to sound stupid but I got a RAVENEA from IKEA and I have it in a good light up room near a window and I wanted to know should I turn it every once in a while ? And for repotting it should I wait a year and keep it in the same pot it came with? 😭

Not stupid at all! It's a good idea to rotate every month or so all of the foliage gets a good share of the light and maintains even growth. 🙂

Hello! I don't have any right now but I have in the passed. They are not great for indoors. Usually if you get them small enough they will do ok for a year or two but ultimately they like a lot of heat, sunlight and airflow.

Yeah, it's fine. As long as they aren't also coming out of the bottom of the pot. If that's the case it might be root bound and ready for an upgrade.

"what's up, gardening friends?" the temperature. So, so, so hot. I don't understand Majesty Palms. People buy them in Florida, plant them in their yard and they die. I have never seen one last more than a couple of years. Part of the problem, I think, is that they are planting them in full sun like other palms and that just doesn't work. But I had one in a pot on the north side of the house and it just keeled over as well. Oh, and apparently you should have gone to WalMart looking for Heliconia. The one closest to me had three different types the other day: the normal orange, Lady Di and H. rostrata.

Haha! I thought about going to Walmart but I was on vacation so I decided to not subject myself to the chaos... and the one that was near by didn't have a garden department, tf is that about!? I get people wanting majesty palms because they are cheap and give the classic palm look. Problem is they are just horrible to grow and have look nice. Only reason I got some was because I had so many request for videos on them and they were really cheap. I really don't feel like overwintering 4 of them in the garage this winter, but I'll give it a shot. As soon as they give me trouble I'm tossing them though, need the space for more desirable plants. I know that sounds wasteful (bc it is) but I'll try. I've kept them alive in my house in winters ok before, so I would assume/hope they would do even better in the bubble. We will see! If I lived in zone 10 I'd be jumping on king palms, coconut palms, adonidias... so many better palms to try out! ... but none as cheap as the majesty. ... though you can 10 gallon coconuts pretty cheap sometimes. Just have to be ok with the mess and hazard that comes with growing them... I want to move to Florida!

You can do either, but if you leave it in the pot, it's a good idea to make sure the drainage in the area is good. They love moisture, but the ground doesn't dry as quickly and pots hold in moisture on top of that.

Hey Josh! Usually they yellow first but sometimes it happens very quickly or even very subtly so it isn't always noticeable. Think it's actually better to see brown first. Yellowing first can mean too much water OR not enough, which is really frustrating.
