I remember seeing Imitation Of Life in the movies , I was about 10. When this woman sang this song, I began to cry uncontrollably . It was my first tear jerker. I asked my friend's mother who sang "that song" , that's when I first heard of Mahalia Jackson . What a voice. .

My mum loved this film... I have always remembered this bit of the film and was overwhelmed with emotion every time. My mum played this as my nans exit in church when she passed away. Mum mum passed away few weeks back and i will be singing this same song on my mothers exit in church before being buried with my nan. 😭

I watched the first version of Imitation of Life (I think 1935) and compared to the 1959 version. Both were great, but what the first version didn't have was Mahalia Jackson. Made a world of difference to me.

This part of the movie "Imitation Of Life" this came from (funeral) always makes EVERY one cry...both man and woman! She really brought it hommmmmmme! She died about 12 years after this film was made in 1959. It's amazing that even way back then (50's) she was catching hell from so called Gospel critics who said she had or was *watering* down her traditionally sung, gospel style to catch a more modern, main stream audience! Goes to show you, you can't please EVERYBODY no matter who you are! RIP!

I agree, Cinderella. When I was a child, and saw this movie... and more specifically, this scene, it changed my life! I remember being STUNNED at the emotion I felt and the beauty in her voice. Once you know singing like this is possible, you recognize it when you hear mediocre. lol.

When Annie died, I was crying buckets...and then this scene with Mahalia Jackson came, and I cried even more... This is the best scene in the film. Thank you oh so much for posting this

Mahalia is the greatest singer to live in the gospel world, the ease to which she reaches for her notes and the ability to deliever what she wants, has never been matched..Tramaine Hawkins did a after demise track of Amazing Grace with Mahalia that is a must listen to, Mahalia is the WORLD'S finest to date.God blessed me w/perfect pitch, instead of a spectacular voice, even though my love of gospel is second to none,.IT IS a cruel joke to be able to hear greatness, but to know you cant touch this..
