I remember seeing Imitation Of Life in the movies , I was about 10. When this woman sang this song, I began to cry uncontrollably . It was my first tear jerker. I asked my friend's mother who sang "that song" , that's when I first heard of Mahalia Jackson . What a voice. .

My mum loved this film... I have always remembered this bit of the film and was overwhelmed with emotion every time. My mum played this as my nans exit in church when she passed away. Mum mum passed away few weeks back and i will be singing this same song on my mothers exit in church before being buried with my nan. 😭

In my personal opinion Mahalia Jackson happens to be the best gospel singer of all time. She has a heavenly voice and I don't know of anyone who can match her talents at all. This part of the movie "Imitation Of Life" this came from (funeral) always makes EVERY one cry...both man and woman! She really brought it hommmmmmme! She died about 12 years after this film was made in 1959. It's amazing that even way back then (50's) she was catching hell from so called Gospel critics who said she had or was *watering* down her traditionally sung, gospel style to catch a more modern, main stream audience! Goes to show you, you can't please EVERYBODY no matter who you are! RIP!

Ms. Mahalia can flat out blow! Her voice brings tears to my eyes! The song itself is also excellent, I love it! She has such control with her voice, and as she is singing the song in this clip her voice is almost haunting, but in a good way. Very spirtual, I love it.
