The singer and lyric writer Eric Wagner disliked being labeled Christian metal, or White metal. He simply was writing about what he was thinking at the time and wasn't pushing an agenda or lifestyle. "I wasn’t out to save anybody, I was just exploring my life."

Trouble was really important in Doom metal. They had Christian themes but weren't necessarily a Christian band as far as I know. Also, figured you would bring up Douglas Wilson at some point in this channel. And the anarcho-primitivist Christian band Psalters set some of the Psalms to music, as well as doing the magnificat, apostle's Creed, etc.

They were 100% a Christian band dude😂😂 every single album and song was pushing a belief in god and messages from the Bible. Every member was a practicing Christian just like Black Sabbath. I don’t know your beliefs but atheists always try to say this about Christian bands so they can justify their own personal views. But dude they’re definitely Christian, this song literally says “put them in fear o lord so that the nations may know” they have an album called “run to the light” Lmaooo

I've been a Christian since God saved me around 16-17. Really, saved me in eternity past and at the cross, but I became a Christian around 16-17. And not every member of Black Sabbath was a practicing Christian. They were all kind of in different places when it came to Christianity but Geezer Butler was Catholic and wrote a lot of Sabbath's songs. I know of bands full of Christians who aren't Christian bands. I don't know that Trouble ever would have called themselves a Christian band was my point, I suppose.

Trouble, to me, is an early doom metal forerunner first and foremost; their Christian fundaments are a distant second. Much the same way as how Testament is technically a Christian band, but they are remembered most for being an influential thrash band. This is probably the only song I've really cared about this week so far.

Matt Jones Exactly! I haven been a fan of Testament since 1987, and I cannot find any example where I can say that they are a “Christian” band. Shoot, they were called “Legacy” until they had to change their name before releasing their debut album and Billy Milano from S.O.D./M.O.D. came up with the name Testament for them.

A song from one of the classic doom albums of the 80's, which helped define Doom Metal as a genre... and it gets a 6 from Vin, on "Christian Week", where all the others songs have been just mediocrity and unoriginality. Yeah, you're right, that's kind of sad to me, there's so much awesome Christian metal out there that I don't listen to much of anything secular, other than maybe some Tool! Vin has already said he's biased against Christian music (kind of a strange thing for someone that calls himself a Christian to say), so giving it the same chance he gives Satanic and evil inspired music will never be there! I've heard V&S react to some really crappy black and other metal and act like it was the greatest thing, and do more than two videos in a day! But, hey, at least they're doing some decent Christian metal, and Sori seems to be coming around that Christian metal bands can be just as good as secular bands, and they don't steal they're sound from secular bands!

@@grimdevildog11 Pretty much everything you said is spot on. I will admit some Christian metal is cheesy and corny but im glad they're at least giving it a try. @@andrewbrorherton6898 I've been a singer for a long time and I've always and listen to bands that had incredible singers. Michael Sweet has always had one of those voices! When he hits that high C at the end of in God We Tust, I get chills and I actually start to laugh because it's so freaking awesome! Also the band Bride, the song Heroes where he hits a C at the very end a couple of different times and holds the note! I still listen to these bands to this day! Another one of my favorites was the Crucified, favorite song is Mindbender here is a link to them doing Mindbender live at cornerstone, they sound just as good if not better than the CD, and you can hear everybody in the background screaming the beginning of their song Crucial Moment "United by Christ" kzbin.info/www/bejne/eYOnc6t8nd2FnLc Yeah there may have been some cheesy lyrics here and there, but I think if you really look at a lot of 80s bands, there was a lot of cheese throughout every genre! But now instead of listening to Slayer and Morbid Angel like I did as a teenager, I'm listening to A Hill to Die Upon, Impending Doom, Living Sacrifice, Zao, For Today, FFAK, etc. So many truly talented Christian bands, and not enough time to listen to all of them 😃

The Misery Shows is from Run to the Light, their third album, and (in my opinion) their third-best album. End of my Daze is from their fourth album (which marked the end of the ‘real’ trouble in my opinion: no more doom/stoner metal. Their first two albums (Trouble/Psalm 9, and The Skull) are their true masterpieces. Later Eric Wagner (RIP) formed ‘The Skull’, and started making real doom/stoner metal again. After Eric left Trouble, Trouble got into trouble…

Since you're totally clueless, here's a history lesson for you two newbs. Before Trouble, there really wasn't anything that sounded like them besides doom originators Black Sabbath. Candlemass didn't release anything until 1985, & St. Vitus didn't release their first demo until 1983. The first Trouble demo was released in 1980 & more demos in '82 & '83, followed by the Assassin single in '84. The band also had a song on 1983's Metal Massacre 4, the song 'The Last Judgement.' With their debut, which is a classic & a great album, Trouble pretty much ushered in a retro-Sabbath sound single-handedly, with slower tempos & doomy riffs, because NWOBHM & thrash with their faster tempos were all the rage at the time. Vocalist/lyricist Eric Wagner was raised catholic, & he wasn't really into the satanic lyricism that was prevalent in some early '80's metal, & Trouble's christian/biblically-themed lyrics were the result. Metal Blade Records marketed them as "white metal," but they were not a christian band, & they didn't agree with that label being placed on them. They were a doom metal band with biblically-themed lyrics. With the release of their self-titled 1990 album, the biblical lyrics were all but gone, except for 'Heaven on My Mind,' & they even began to veer a bit away from the doom sound of their 80's albums. After this album their sound became more of a stoner/psychedelic sound, while still maintaining some doom. You both should be embarrassed to give this song a 6 & a 6.5, which equals 0 credibility, especially considering all of the 8's, 9's, 10's & 11's you give to totally crap songs that are complete throwaways. Again, 0 credibility. And no I'm not upset, I'm just bewildered as it pertains to your thought processes. lmao

Umm, Witchfinder General formed in 1979 and their Burning a Sinner EP was released in 1981. There were other NWOBHM bands at that time that were putting out the post Sabbath Doom sound like Cirith Ungol, Pentagram, Pagan Altar, etc... I love me some Trouble, and I still follow what Eric Wagner is doing these days, but to say they were the only ones doing it at the time - "Trouble pretty much ushered in a retro-Sabbath sound single-handedly", isn't historically accurate.

@@bridesbiscuit Umm, I didn't mean literally all by themselves, that's why I said pretty much. The first Trouble demo was 1980 & they weren't a part of the NWOBHM. A lot of metal was played on college radio back then, like WUJC & I listened in quite a bit. Witchfinder General were NWOBHM & kinda weak imo, low quality production & mediocre vocals, overrated. Pentagram didn't really do anything of note until '85, Pagan Altar put out a demo in '82 & then disappeared until '98. Cirith Ungol's Frost and Fire is actually much closer to up tempo NWOBHM than Trouble-style doom, not even close in sound. I'm aware of all of that, & I'm not talking about those bands. There really wasn't a serious buzz concerning retro-Sabbath until Trouble showed up on the scene & that's when people really started to take notice. I know this because I grew up with it & remember what was going on. Once St. Vitus dropped & Candlemass showed up after Trouble, then they really helped with the type of doom I'm talking about & the buzz got louder.

I do think they give 10's and 11's a little too easily. But I also think because they did not grow up with metal they are going backwards and that make a difference in their ratings.

@@jasonfutrell8560 This is definitely not the channel to visit to hear authoritative knowledge concerning metal from either one of them, that's for sure. Vin's analysis of lyrics is pretty good, but he sometimes ridiculously flubs those as well, particularly in terms of the motivation of the writer, &/or where the intended point of view is coming from. I give Sori a pass on lyrical analysis for the most part, because she admits to being confused quite a bit, & I appreciate her honesty. Vin is Mr. Know-It-All, so it's easy to read what he's all about from the get-go. For such a dedicated & devout christian, he surely does struggle with demonstrating humility in many of the vids that I've watched.

Finally TROUBLE!! Another great song by them is Run to the Light and then after their religious era I’d recommend anything off their self titled album or Manic Frustration. Another heavier song I’d recommend is the Whipping Post by Vengeance Rising about the crucifixion

Please react to Fit For A King - Dead Memory. The singer Ryan wrote the song for his wife and it's an interesting parallel between the theme of forgiveness you saw in Oblivion.

Hey guys, do Childrens Holocaust by Count Raven. Heavy lyrics and heavy fucking doom. Song makes me cry. Trouble!!! Doom legends, one of the best American doom bands in history. The musicianship especially on the self titled is up there with the best hard rock/metal.

The funcking Doom Riff 🤘🏻🎸.... Amazing!!! Trouble's distinctive feature is its "spiritual" and not necessarily "Christian" lyrics. The truth is that this WM story was forced by the group's first label, Metal Blade Records, which assigned the band the term "white metal" as a form of marketing, which contrasted with the growing black metal movement of the decade. 1980s with for example the band Venom that was also in their catalogue....
