DIY Herbal Bitters Tincture Recipe

Vodka (~1 quart’s worth)
Large mason jar
Dried orange peel (dry in oven at low temp until crispy)
Cinnamon sticks
Anise
Cloves
Ginger
Black pepper
Fresh ginger, chopped
Directions:
1. Add all dry elements to a large mason jar
2. Fill to the top with vodka
3. Let the mixture sit for 4-6 weeks, shaking the jar often
4. After 4-6 weeks, strain the liquid, then add back to your mason jar or a dropper bottle
5. The serving size is flexible: about 1/2 tsp or a splash. Have a few times a day before meals to aid digestion.

Also was going to mention…you may already be aware of this…but there are different kinds of cinnamon and it’s best to use the safe form of cinnamon (Ceylon) cinnamon is the safest toxins wise. May have to order it online as it’s not typically sold in stores. Even if the other kinds of cinnamon are organic…it still doesn’t make it safer. It needs to be Ceylon. All of this is researchable online. That’s how I found out. Just passing it along. ❤

Yes, I most definitely agree that Ceylon’s the way to go! Learned this long ago bcuz I LOVE cinnamon, and I use it often, even when I cook. Many don’t know the danger associated with the more commonly bought “Cassia variety” of cinnamon. And Ceylon has many additional health benefits!

Thanks Rachelle! Is there a benefit to using fresh ginger vs dried in this recipe? Will the water in the fresh ginger affect the shelf life of the extraction?

How much of each ingredient do we need? Hard to see how many cloves and anise was used. Thank you! 🤩😊

It's really loose! A tablespoon or a small handful. Though you could easily do less or twice as much! Add more of the flavors you like and less of the ones you don't like. (Lots of people like more cinnamon and less anise, say.) Hope that helps!

Hi Rachelle this is first of your videos I've seen. Thanks! Excited to try your recipe but might want also to give some to family members with no alcohol so... I might want to try this with my homemade water kefir vinegar, or, apple cider vinegar. Will you please tell me approximately much vegetable glycerin to use along with the vinegar? Thanks!

@RachelleRobinetteSupernatural - IDK why but I used fresh orange peel and now not sure that such was ok. Might you advise on whether or not fresh orange peel will be an issue? Also I've let this stuff sit longer than 6 weeks......😬

Sharing the same note for you here! Alas nothing works quite the same as alcohol for tincturing but! you can make a similar version with apple cider vinegar and honey (half & half), or just vinegar. We'll have to make one of those in the future! Vegetable glycerine is also used in non-alcoholic tinctures. :)

If you don't use alcohol, it won't be able to extract its essential oils and nutrients. In addition, alcohol prohibits bacterial growth... If you don't use a higher alcohol proof content, your decoction will go bad and or mold
