Primrose was here with us two years ago and was supposed to come back to us the following spring to finish her training, but was one of the unfortunate group of horses who were delayed by the pandemic and Barry's time off because of his operations.
But she's back with us now and doing really well in every aspect of her training, bar one! Despite having spent the last two years turned out or in the stable, she has come back with a problem with large vehicles.

What a dear little 🐴 pony. I hope it gets over its problem. Horses are my very favorite animal made by our creator from the very beginning. 🐴🐴

I appreciate that you keep to your standard of a happy confident horse even if it takes longer than expected. Brava to the owner for also sticking with the training even with the pushed out timeline. A lovely pony. Seeing the tension/response is also helpful to help compare to the relaxed and confident moments for us watchers.

Still watching, but I wonder if something happened while she was out in the pasture. People sometimes harass or try to frighten horses from vehicles; throwing rocks, blasting the horn, or an accident with a lot of noise, or just passing by at high rates of speed. She's really pretty, seems eager to please. I'm always struck by how narrow the roads are in the UK, I'd be terrified, but everyone does just fine, horses, bikes. It's so green there, it looks like South Carolina in the summer, vines all over the trees. I live in dry and sparse Alberta, so such greenery looks like another planet. Take care of yourself.

My shoes on my horse last about 6 weeks to 8 weeks depending on where and how much I rode. 30 days that’s some miles.

Slightly amusing that there was so little traffic, and it was good to see a few people giving more space. Have you noticed any difference with the new road hierarchy rules?
@barryhook2
@barryhook2 Жыл бұрын
Most vehicles around us are considerate. Some 'overdo' the new road hierarchy rules which can actually make a situation more dangerous - for example if they go past extremely slowly when the horse is uncertain, it can actually unsettle them more than if the vehicle just moves past at a reasonable, constant pace. The other issue we come across, is vehicles passing so wide that they brush the hedge on the opposite side of the road, which we must also train our horses not to react to!

I suppose it's possible that a small aircraft or a hot air balloon or something, went over the field making the noise of a lorry. Pure guesswork of course!

Dogs go thru what are called "fear imprint periods" when they're young, when they can be "overloaded" by certain things and develop a phobia about them. These can be overcome with time & patience and gradual re exposure. I swear that some horses go thru the same thing in colt hood, and treatment is just the same (and sometimes just as slow!)

I suppose that there is a very faint chance something scared her when she was travelling home in her box? Or some plonker may have chased her with a four by four or bike in her field.

I remember when she was there before. I was wondering when she was going to be back. I'm wondering if her field at home is by a road where she could have been frightened by something passing by Mr. Hook? Is that a possibility? Hope you are doing well barryhook2!! Shes not been frightened by anything, her field dosent back onto any roads even. I think with some time she will come right again. Shes not a dope on a rope and has a little bit of life in her.

@@angelaive9546 It was just a curiosity that I had to explore. Thank you for answering. And yes, I'm sure she'll come right again. She's a very quick study, and with steady hands on those lines I have no doubts about that at all. Have yourself a nice evening Angela!!! Jenn. 💖

In Nc I don’t ride on highway. People you meet up with in cars blow horns scream out windows go 60 mph don’t move over to pass nor do the slow down to dangerous

I think she has simply gotten used to the quiet of being in a paddock for 2 years where there was no traffic. Now she is thrown back into the deep end. Maybe she is coping with traffic but really doesn't like it, now she is a bit older.

Have you considered driving her without blinkers? Could the perspective change possibly help?
@britbyname3620
@britbyname3620 Жыл бұрын
Yep I was wondering tho Barry knows best but how can blinkers help ? Don’t they get more of a fright when they “ suddenly “ get to see something. ?? Rather than with their natural sight Would love to know .. and learn 😉
@comesahorseman
@comesahorseman Жыл бұрын
You could try leaving them at the barn, but if blinkers we're the problem then she should have more trouble with vehicles overtaking from behind. Her problem seems to be approaching trucks. IDK.
@AndreaDingbatt
@AndreaDingbatt Жыл бұрын
I'm sure that Barry knows how she's going to be with or without the blinkers. Rubber bits and no whips! It seems like Primrose reacts more to the traffic from the front rather than from behind. Best Wishes and Kindest Regards, Andrea and Critters. ...XxX...

Would Constantly walking on hard surfaces damage horses joints? Is there such a thing as rubber shoes for horses who constantly need to walk on metal? And why not?
@joannasott5675

thing is the amazing design of the hoof is a shock absorber already. Sure there s such thing as doing too much Im sure. But strong as a horse has some sense to it as they sure got more strength in many areas that leave us stunned until we ve had much experience of them
@barryhook2
@barryhook2 Жыл бұрын
Hi Norma, I think we answered this on a previous comment of yours. Yes some horses use hoof boots (including our pony schoolmaster, George) which are a bit like rubber shoes you can remove when not needed.
