Troubleshooting a Mercury Outboard Temperature Gauge Sender

This is extremely helpful. I want to add a temp Guage to a boat I am reworking all the onboard electrical circuits that never protected. All I need to after this is go find if the motor ever had the temp sensor. Just finished adding va Trim sensor and gauge so this will now be 🎂!

Turns out my gauge wasn’t working because the previous owner had the blue and brown wire connected to the sensor. After switching the wires everything worked! FYI mine was a Mercruiser 3.0 inboard.

I don't believe the 2-stroke has an oil pressure sensor. There is an oil level sensor that will cause the alarm to beep if your reservoir is empty. Here is a good video on it : m.kzbin.info/www/bejne/gYLbkninbcR6jKc

when you are taking the brown wire that was connected to the temp sender and grounding it to "somewhere on the engine casing" (1:07) are you taking that brown wire and just touching it to any other piece of near by metal on the motor? Since the camera was zoomed in on the gauge at that part of the video I could not confirm and don't want to do that if that's not what I should be doing. Thanks in advance for any information!

Yeah I just removed the wire from the sensor and touched it to an unpainted bolt on the engine.

sending units use a tapered thread and shouldn't leak without sealant

Should, could and would (shouldn’t, couldn’t…..) always raise a red flag 🚩for me. A little thread sealant or Teflon tape at the base of the the plug ‘should’ add an extra measure to insure a positive seal.

Random question but what head unit do you have? I just seen the controls it looks tidy

It's just a Bluetooth remote for the cheapest head unit I could find at Walmart. I have to change the battery every spring. I regret buying it because the first trip out it always has a dead battery haha.
