Trout Fishing In The Sierra: Mosquito Lakes

It’s been hot in #Sacramento. Temperatures reached 100 degrees. Thus, it’s a blessing to be able to #EscapeTheHeat by going up the #SierraNevada #mountain. In this #FishingFriday day trip, our destination is a little bit further, almost three hours’ drive away from Sacramento, up at approximately 8,000 feet in elevation; it is the majestic #MosquitoLakes. These are shallow lakes next to California State Highway 4. Because of the easy access by vehicles, the lakes get a lot of fishing pressure. Also, the lakes are rather shallow, and to my knowledge the stocked trout do not survive for the following season. Drop me a comment if you believe otherwise. Thus, these are #putandtake lakes. Be that as it may, I did land the biggest #rainbow #trout of the day, around one pound. Ate it for dinner the same day! It was delicious.
On the way home we stopped by #AlpineLake and #AngelsCreek. Alpine Lake is deep and is known for big trout. Fish Whisperer catches big trophy trout out of Alpine Lake yearly…. Angel Creek is also heavily stocked by the California Department of Fish and Wildlife (#CDFW) during the summer months with #RainbowTrout.
At #LowerMosquitoLake, we caught trout using #CarolinaRig, with 2-3 feet leader, floating #NightCrawler, #BerkeyPowerBall, and #BerkeyPowerBait. We caught one limit or five trout on #GreenPowerBait. We were unsuccessful with #ArtificialLure at Lower Mosquito. I hiked to the adjacent Upper Mosquito throwing a micro black jig, which got no hits. I then switched over to a ¼ oz. #SilverKastmaster: two trout in two casts. Hence, we packed up from Lower and moved to #UpperMosquitoLake. We found the location full of trout that would hit just about any #ShinyLure. We made some awesome friends along the way fishing next to us.
Overall, it was a super pleasant day trip.

You are correct my Brother. If we want native trout, we gotta hike away from major roads.... I am just glad to find 'em and what they want before it gets crowded. I should have showed what I tried for the first half an hour that did not work: micro jig. Typically, it works great; but on this trip the rainbow prefer shiny metal lures.... 👍🙏🎣JUHammah⚒

@@NorCalOutdoor On the way there, you will pass by many "good spots" such as Angels Creeks, White Pines Lake, Alpine Lake, and finally Mosquito Lakes. All these spots are regularly stocked with trout. However, Alpine Lake is deep enough to have trophy trout!
