I go Trout fishing & truck camping with my dog, Tikka after a quick update at the Mountain Fishing Farm! We pick up building supplies for the Desert Camp where I decided to build a small cabin. At night we build a fire and are completely surrounded by wild Coyotes!!!

Fun fact for you: Tikka means woodpecker in my language, Finnish. Tikka is also a very well known firearms manufacturer from Finland. With a flying slogan "Tikka takoo tarkasti" (The woodpecker strikes true. I know, doesn't work that well in English), they are appreciated especially by hunters, as well as the other brand of arms and ammo from the same manufacturer, Sako. But I guess most of you know this, you have Tikka and Sako rifles in the US I guess.

I'll admit I haven't finished the video yet, but I thought I'd tell you about the prickly pears! Yes you can eat them, although you'll have to know when they're ripe. They can be easily harvested with a thick glove, just make sure to rinse them very thoroughly before touching them with your bare hand, because they contain little micro-spines that will leave your fingers in pain for hours. You can also eat the pads themselves, they're actually considered a superfood if I'm not mistaken. As far as uses, I've seen people who eat them like apples and as well making them jam is quite popular. Can't wait to finish the video!

lightly roasting in the fire will remove all those fine hair like prickles as well as the larger ones, or you can scrape them out. we have them in Australia, great survival food and lots of moisture. I've never tried them but an Aussie youtuber Rokkit Kit has relied on them for a couple survival videos. pretty cool you have them.

Sooo I started watching your video a little over a month ago. And I just want to thank you for the content you put out! I’ve binge watched just about all of your videos! It’s so relaxing, the excitement you get made me want to get back into fishing. You’re so interacting with us it truly feels like we’re on the adventure, you as a person and your kindness and demeanor inspires me to start going mountain fishing. Im from North Carolina and ours aren’t as beautiful but the thought of adventuring out and fishing in random lakes in the forest and mountains just makes me so happy! So I want to start! I stopped fishing because I wasn’t catching anything at all all the times I’ve went within the past 2 years or 3! But took notes from you, and last week me and my fiancé went fishing! Caught some massive (massive to us😂) catfish! Mannnn I was so happy! Now that I’m just about caught up on all your videos I was super excited to see you upload this! Leif, fan of tacos that you are, I highly recommend that you research "Nopal" and "nopales" online. Not only are Prickly Pear (there are over 100 species) cactus fruits edible, the paddles (leaves) are a very common and delicious ingredient in Mexican cuisine. Numerous TV chefs and online video creators specializing in Mexican fare demonstrate techniques of safely handling the paddles and preparing recipes with them. Mexican culture is well represented on the eastern side of the Cascades. Stop in and visit any of the many mercados found along your route from Okanagan region to the desert camp and you are sure to find the paddles in their produce section. By the way, you and other KZbin video producers have whetted my appetite for fish and fishing sufficiently for this old fart to have just purchased his first fishing license in over thirty years! I have an daunting slate of tasks to address this year; but at the very least, I hope to wedge some fishing into travel between WA and MT. Perhaps I'll encounter NWFS somewhere in the vicinity of Potholes on one of those trips?

You can eat the prickly pear but only the inside part. Recommend putting it in the fridge so it gets nice and cold and then eating it with some lime and salt 🧂 too many will make you constipated tho

Good video. Some suggestions are coming up. Looks like you need a wheelbarrow. I'm not sure if you already have one. The creek you fish at your compound looks like an irrigation canal, so be aware of that, I guess. The lake at your ranch will get exciting in a few weeks just guessing. If you could shop your local building supply they are great people. Nothing against the chain. Good video as always.

Hey bro! I am a beekeeper...and I assure you...if you go with honeybees out in the desert compound...you won't have "double sage brush tea" instead you'd have some FIRE honey to mix with that sage brush! Hit me up if you have questions on honeybees! Another great video as always keep it coming!

I’ve been eating prickley pear fruit since I was a boy in Arizona. Either skin it with a fruit knife or burn off the small spines called glochids. They’re like fiber glass. The seeds are super hard though so don’t just chomp into the fruit. Super delicious 🤙🏼

Hey when Are you going to make a garden plot? You can use that dried cow manure to enrich the soil. There are techniques to build a platform below where your chickens will roost and then collect the chicken manure, compost it and that makes excellent manure also. As far as using those cactus. Wait until the fruit is red and use heavy gloves to collect the fruit. You have to remove the needles by burning them off I believe. The Mexican folks use the paddles also by removing the needles and cooking them by boiling or roasting, or both. Look it up on youtube or google. Do you plan on hunting some deer later? They are plenty in that part of the State. Anyway love your videos. Peace

Ok bud i hardly ever comment anything but today i will! Yes prickly pears are amazing! Put on some gloves while you peel the outter shell. The cactus is also delicious and edible! Best grilled like steak! Only eat young and thin cactus And dont wash. Scratch the outter skin and salt lather it like steak! Grill them until a little chard! Its got a nice lime flavor and meaty texture! Great for tacos!!!

I saw my first coyote in NC yesterday on a 18 mile hike. I didn't even know we had them. It was only about 30 feet away. I heard strange barking/howling at night (but they sounded a lot like dogs, maybe some were or they all were or they were just more coyotes). It got my heart beating for a moment.

You can definitely eat the fruit from that cactus. I love the taste, sweet and acidic, something like a kiwi with bigger seeds. Be very careful tho, the spikes on the fruit are tiny and if you accidentally eat one it could get stuck in your mouth and your in for a tough few days. In the Canary Islands, the people who pick them put them in a plastic box and shake them so the small spikes fall off. I prefer to cut them off with a knife just to be sure. Hope you try them one day! 7:38

Prickly pear fruit is freaking delicious. The best way I know of to harvest them and eat them, is to wear some thick rubber dish gloves when you pluck them. Then you put them in a bucket full of water for about an hour. Then with this gloves still on you rub the the needles off in the water, you have a nice safe Delicious fruit!
