A Sea Trout is a Brown Trout that goes out to sea. They're the same species so tricky to know if a sea run trout if not a fresh run fish. The mouth past the eye differentiates a salmon from a sea/ brown trout.

Either way, the good news is - This spring, 2023, there has been a far higher number of Sea-Trout in the system as you can see when I tried Trotting for the Grayling; which have also moved further downriver than usual!

Since posting this are you any sure of which it was? Caught my first trout on river today only 6 inch little thing but I don't know if its a sea or brown. Should add it was a surprise and with a float and worm

Hi Olly, sadly this was not a Sea Trout (Sewin in Wales) and this is about as small as you would get for a fish that had returned from its first run back in from the sea. Like Salmon they are silver to begin with and colour up quickly. The easiest way to tell smaller ones is the mouth goes back past the eye on seatrout but not on brownies... Bigger specimens are easy, they are huge!! My best on a fly was from the river Teifi above Newcastle Emlyn, 6lb 2oz and my biggest on a Mepps was 12lb 4oz but that was way back in the 70's and taken in the estuary at Cardigan; still worth a try on a night-time tide but you get hammered by the Bass-such a bummer :) Keep trying and, if you want to improve your chances, fish Welsh rivers....
