You know you're looking at the wonders of a great teacher when you see one demonstrating the techniques with such finesse!!! Kudos to Simon and Ashland Flyshop!!!

For a “Spey gear focused” video, Mr. Gawesworth has imparted more crucial info about casting technique in this single video - than most “casting technique” videos combined. Plus, the end of this video is a must for those seeking to understand the single hand - arm/wrist/timing conundrum. Thanks much - Ashland & Simon P.S. the blessing is extremely important too!

By far the best instruction content I have watched to date, not many I can watch for 28 minutes and be disappointed when it finishes. Off to but a trout Spey set up now 👍

Yep, I confess, I am an early haul guy and for the life of me, I cannot get rid of that bad habit. I can « air » cast the movement perfectly, mimicking the double haul but once I have a rod in my hands, my timing is totally different. Ugh!

4:20 I’d have to respectfully disagree with matching the rod weight to fish weight. On the grande ronde I fished an 8wt switch rod with 550g skagit simply because of the size of fly and heaviness of sinktip, even tho mr. Gawesworth would probably consider this over gunned for fish in the 6lb range.

One of the best spey cast instruction I have ever seen on KZbin. One question to be sure: I have purchased a #5wt Rio Intouch Single handed Spey line for my 5wt 9' single handed Rod. That's so far the best line I ever have cast. The river I am fishing has rainbow trouts up to 90 cm (ca. 4.5 kg). Now I would like to purchase a 2 handed trout Spey/Switch rod. If I am right and would like to use the Rio single handed Spey line #5wt at a size #2wt Trout spey rod it would fit perfectly. Is this correct? Or should I better go for a #3-4wt trout spey/switch rod and buy another matching line? Thx in advance for answers.
@willjohnson94125 жыл бұрын
Hello! Thanks for the comment! In theory this should perform well but I have not have a great experience with this line on trout spey rods and switch rods. I would look at a small scandi in the 25 - 28 ft range for best results on a trout spey rod. The rio scandi body would be my strongest recommendation. I do agree that the single hand spey line is awesome on single hand rods. Love it.

Great vid! What brand and type of line would you pair the 3110 rod to for dry flies and nymphs for trout, and what line on my spare spool for smallmouth bass with streamers and poppers?

Great stuff....still a lack of trout Spey rods in the Uk in a 3wt.... I’m going to have one made on a blank as an experiment....how did he change the line over on the rods so easily at the end....I take it there was no fly attached ? And what about the wedge timing info...and for free...absolutely superb 👍
@kundetjenesten4 жыл бұрын
I found that the weight classes seem rather arbitrary depending on the rod maker. The 3wt Sage trout spey rod according to a local fly shop has a recommended line weight of 250-300gr, and my Guideline LPXe 6/7wt switch rod has a recommendation of 260-290gr. Basically I stopped looking at weight classes in twohanded and switch rods, the recommended line weight speaks more truth at the end of the day.

The settings on the soundboard were dialed to be heard through one speaker among a big area, not to be recorded via portable audio recorder. Couldn't do much besides make sure it wasn't peaking on the recorder.

Chris Myron yeah man to be honest I the minute I hit enter on that comment I kind of regretted it. I mean, how cool is it that I get to watch this on demand from the comfort of my own home? Not too long ago I wouldn’t even know who Simon Galsworth was, let alone have his presentations piped into my house on demand for free.

I have a little problem understandig the weight-stuff you Are talking about. I have a switchrod, a 10' 7-weight rod. The manufacturer recommend 16gram/250grain of i use a short Ultralight Scandi line. But 17-19gram (275/300ish) if i use normalt WF-lines. So i think the lineweight recommended is the same as normal 1handed flyrod in a #7. So i dont understand the convertion you Are talking about here.
@willjohnson94125 жыл бұрын
Thank you for the comment! The recommendations you have for your rod sound suspect to me. They don't make sense. The scandi recommendation sounds reasonable for such a short, light 7wt but without knowing what the make or model is it's hard to guess. Let me know if this helps.

3wt Spey line, remember. He's talking about the line to use on a regular single handed rod. Spey lines are about 3 weights heavier for the same number.
