That's not what this means at all. None of our best starting pitchers were there. Only one of our top 20 pitchers was there and he had an absolute meltdown. The US offense had an uncharacteristically bad night by not scoring a single player that got on base. Let's keep it a stack. The US lost by one run in the finals with our fourth best pitching rotation

All I'm saying is that you might want to pump the brakes on claiming that the US isn't by far the best off this tournament alone. Team USA had to deal with way more restrictions even with the pitching they did have than any other team

Besides, the exact same could be said about the Japan team, too. The fact is, USA didn't lose because of lack of pitchers, the pitchers rather did fine, it was the galactic lineup that couldn't get the work done. BTW, I agree that the US is probably the strongest baseball nation in the world, especially in its width and depth of talent. But in a tournament, the width and depth of talent doesn't really matter much, it's the dedication that counts (and luck, of course) . It especially doesn't help when one side is being over-confident or arrogant for that matter. So, is USA the strongest? Yes, most probably. Heads and shoulders above? No.

Darvish will be OK. He's always been like that in international competition. The media often portrays him as the pitcher who got the winning out for Japan in the championship game back in 2009 WBC, but that was because he blew Japan's lead in the previous inning. In other words, Darvish getting hit usually leads to Japan's victory.

Japanese high school baseball has about 5,000 team tournaments. If you lose, it's over, so the experienced Japanese team has an advantage in the tournament. Ohtani lost in the regional preliminaries in high school, so he knows how scary it can be. If it had been a 7-game system like the postseason, the result might have been different.
