Brilliant stuff again. The sequence at 3:53 (small pool, big fish) was spine tingling stuff. Love the way the fish screamed off towards the beach. I'm using a GoPro session, its super light but the quality of your GX7/Ghost S combination has me saving for an upgrade.
@troutboynz8 жыл бұрын
+Craig Mounsey Gidday Craig, many thanks, yes, I love that we segment as well, it actually beached itself, but I was a bit slow panning with the camera to catch it, not exactly much room to move in that pool, it was tiny! Nothing wrong with the wee sessions, if they had video tagging they would be a winner. You soon realise action camera short-comings once using something with a big sensor I'm finding though. The G7X has a new model out, so would expect the pricing to drop significantly soon. Cheers, Andrew

+troutboynz Thanks for the reply Andrew, quick question about the packraft, I noticed that you both managed to get into it (just), which packraft did you buy? any problems to report? Cheers, Craig
@troutboynz8 жыл бұрын
***** The model I got was the Yukon Yak, while not made for two people it will do it fine in calm water. I'm 92kg and Dan is about 75kg plus maybe 15kg gear, so quite a load on. No problems, I love it! Have run some pretty hefty whitewater and was a hell of a lot of fun after a days fishing. Hope to put together a decent packraft clip soonish. Cheers
@CraigMounsey8 жыл бұрын
+troutboynz I don't think I'm going to admit what I weigh in at. I think I'll get a Packraft, apart from looking like a lot of fun, there is a particular section of NZ river I've had my eye for a while that could only be accessed in this way. Another adventure beckons... Thanks again, Craig

5:05 - You caught the V for Vendetta fish lol, who's gonna lead the resistance now! Man that's a beautiful fish, ridiculous big red spots on it. Have you caught any others with similar spots on that river? Boggles my mind how the occasional trout decides to go all flamboyant like that
@troutboynz8 жыл бұрын
+tim3854 Hey mate, long time no hear, yeah, really nice fish, went just under 6.5, belly was bulging with Cicada's, had to put about 30 casts over him before he took, only persisted as I swore I saw a nose come up vaguely in the foam. This stream is synonymous with huge-red spotted fish, VERY common, one of the fish on Back Country South Island from the same stream was even more vividly marked. Stunning colours, even better in person ;)

Comments below I couldn't agree more with. Two of the trout the one with v and another with a chunk out of pectal fin - is this run ins with these giant eels of yours.? Cheers for posting on a weekend when I didn't get out with the rod it made my weekend. Watched it twice.
@troutboynz8 жыл бұрын
+Lewis McGregor Bang on Lewis, they are Eel bites, see them on probably 50% of the back country fish here, often on the Hens' it's round the vent, no doubt the Eels looking for an easy feed of eggs when the fish are ready to drop. On the jacks (which probably make up 70% of the back country catch), the bites are usually on the back like that fish was. It's quite interesting, Wellington streams have a pretty healthy population of large Eels it seems. They give me the shits! There was one following that fish round the pool as I landed it, and we saw quite a few others out and about in the middle of the day.

is this a stocked river? Fly fishing similar size waters in England, I'm amazed at the size and extreme variety of these stunning fish.
@troutboynz8 жыл бұрын
Hi, no these are all 100% wild fish, no stocking occurs in any of these waters, and in fact very few New Zealand waters at all. The environment is just very good for them to average around 5lbs in weight. We often catch the same fish year on year and it's interesting to watch their weight gains and losses over the season's. Cheers, Andrew
@wanderingflyfisherman68258 жыл бұрын
+troutboynz Wow. it sounds otherworldly... What are the expenses like? It costs me anywhere between £40-£90+ (and it can be much, much more depending on location and the amount of water) for annual permits for the rivers I fish. You also need an Environment agency licence which is £27 for the year. How does this compare over there?
@troutboynz8 жыл бұрын
Pretty cheap to be honest, you buy an annual license that allows you to fish anywhere in the country for a whole year for NZD$90 around £48. Amazing value for money, this clip is amazingly close to the capital city as well.
@wordvirus20008 жыл бұрын
Awesome yet again. The one brown with a v shaped mark between dorsal and tail was different. Any idea what this was caused by?
@troutboynz8 жыл бұрын
+James Guilford Thanks James, that's an Eel bite, see it very commonly in back country fish, the Eels often have a go at the trout, I guess it's only natural sharing such a confined pool!
@wordvirus20008 жыл бұрын
+troutboynz It sure looked eel shaped but I didn't think they would be tenacious enough to try it on with a good sized fish like that one.
@troutboynz8 жыл бұрын
+James Guilford They will try it on alright, no matter what the size of the fish, we have caught fish over 10lb with large Eel bits on them. Usually on the Hen's it's around the vent as they try to suck the eggs out of them at spawning time, otherwise on the Jacks, it's usually on the back as that one was. I remember as a kid fly fishing, I had a large Eel latch on to my waders and start wildly twisting!

Hi trout boy, I have noticed that many of your videos are in or around Wellington. Im going there for a week in 2 days and was wondering if you had any tips/spots? I fish for trout and sea fish. fly fishing, lure fishing, surf casting and kayak fishing. Cheers, and epic videos too!
@troutboynz8 жыл бұрын
Gidday mate, yes, most of my stuff shot locally, to be honest it will be a hard task this time of the year as most streams closed and often running dirty, but the Hutt River is an amazing fishery and often fishes well this time of the year. Usual dry/nymph combo's will do the trick. Saltwater, again limited to the weather, but, lot's of Kahawau around, so would try the Hutt River Mouth. If you don't mind travel, and IF the river is running clear, the Ruamahunga is well worth it, over the hill in the Wairarapa, 1hr drive. The Otaki as well can be quite good, down from the SH1 bridge. cheers, Andrew

What kind of pants/waders are you guys wearing? I've watched many of your videos, but have always wondered that. Idk if we've got those things in the States. Are they neoprene?
@troutboynz8 жыл бұрын
+AkinToMeatloaf Gidday, I simply wear light OR (Outdoor Research) "Ferossi" pants, always with 3mm neoprene socks. Some of the guys I fish with wear basic polypropylene leggings with shorts over the top, namely for the pockets and not looking like a a female-in-tights on the river! Both forms of pants keep the Mosquito's at bay and also the sharp branches / blackberry when bashing through bush. Cheers, Andrew.

So what is the deal over there? Are these sea run brown trout or are all these caught on private land? I've spent a lifetime pursuing giant browns and have never seen anything like what you guys are catching time and again. Heck, I even live in one of the top trout states in the US, and short of some private lake or something, nowhere here in Montana has trout after trout like that. I'm awe inspired by your video!
@troutboynz8 жыл бұрын
+huntzz21 Glad you enjoyed it. No these are all public streams with public access to all. As long as you pay your $100 a year, you can fish pretty much wherever you like in New Zealand. These fish are 100% wild, not sea-run, they are residents in the rivers and streams with natural regeneration, if an older fish is snuffed out, a new one will generally move into that pool in weeks. This is all so very close to a major city as well. They get big at this time of year by feeding on Cicada's, gaining as much as 2-4lbs in some cases over the short 2 month Cicada season. Regards, Andrew
@huntzz218 жыл бұрын
That is just absolutely amazing! I don't know if I will ever make it to NZ but if I did trout would be a top priority.

Hey buddy! Awesome video! I have to ask. What kind of net are you using? Do you have a link? I HAVE TO HAVE ONE!!! That thing is sweet! Any info on that net would be greatly appreciated, I'm tired of lugging my big net around with me lol!
@troutboynz7 жыл бұрын
Cheers buddy! The net is a McLeans Weigh Net, they are New Zealand made and are fantastic quality, telescopic so extra reach on solo fish and fold away in the scabbard nicely so no snagging on bushes, lots of places in NZ sell them, but try flyshop.co.nz as a start, the model I can't remember sorry, but easy to find. the scales only weigh up to 14lb though being the only downside. Andrew

@troutboynz7 жыл бұрын
Big browns means either Rotorua in the North island or the Lewis Pass area of the South Island, both locations offer the best chance of browns over 10lb. Rotorua is small stream sight fishing, South Island, large braided river systems, both quite different. A guide for a day is a must in either location if you want the best chance, cheers.
@82rocksolid7 жыл бұрын
Awesome info buddy! I really appreciate it! If I'm going to spend the money to travel there I might as well at least get a guide for the first 2 days or something! Thank you I'm excited to see where I'll end up going! If you think of anything else that could help me let me know! Cheers!
@wch82178 жыл бұрын
I'm sure you get asked this a lot, but where are all of the smaller trout in New Zealand? Do the trout simply grow very fast, or do you simply not show them in your videos? Most trout I catch here in England are tiny, but you never seem to catch anything under about 3lbs, where are the small ones?
@troutboynz8 жыл бұрын
+William Chamberlain We do get smaller trout in some waterways, but the majority of back country fish in the smaller tributaries (in Wellington anyway) average around 5lbs, or about 2.3kg. They simply get big on the abundant food supply. During the Cicada season (now) it's not uncommon for trout to gain an additional 2-3lbs in some cases, just extraordinary growth. The water quality is also very good. There are certainly some rivers where the fish average 2-3lbs, but like many of us, the thrill of catching bigger fish, but lesser numbers is just too great! Cheers
@wch82178 жыл бұрын
+troutboynz Thanks for taking the time to reply. That really is an amazing growth rate, I'm not surprised I never see any small trout in your videos! Another great video too by the way, and good luck with the season ahead.
