My Troy built horses making a noise when I engage the transmission, sounds like metal on metal noise! Any suggestions?

Drain out a little oil from trans and read it. Look for metal in the oil. Make sure you are fully in gear

I would look for a used rear PTO before I spent that money on gears and bearings. People around here give the tillers away mostly because they don’t know what they are and could care less
