This is another part from the Director's Cut Version Of Troy. King Odysseus is being funny and messing with the messengers. He has such a great sense of humor and he's very humble. Not power hungry. I love him.

"I'm gonna miss my dog" That line is absolutely heartbreaking if you know his legend. After spending ten years at war and another ten adrift, Odysseus finally washes up on the home shores of Ithica and sees his dog waiting there for him. The poor animal had been waiting twenty years for his master to return and after having finally seen him again, dies on the spot.

Why doesn't he just take the dog with him?

Because he had to disguise himself in order to retake his kingdom from the suitors. If he took the dog they may have recognised Odysseus had returned and killed him

Wikipedia says: After ten years fighting in Troy, followed by ten more years struggling to get home to Ithaca, Odysseus finally arrives at his homeland. In his absence, reckless suitors have taken over his house in hopes of marrying his wife Penelope. In order to secretly re-enter his house to ultimately spring a surprise attack on the suitors, Odysseus disguises himself as a beggar, and only his son Telemachos is told of his true identity. As Odysseus approaches his home, he finds Argos lying neglected on a pile of cow manure, infested with fleas, old and very tired. This is a sharp contrast to the dog Odysseus left behind; Argos used to be known for his speed and strength and his superior tracking skills. Unlike everyone else, including Eumaios, a lifelong friend, Argos recognizes Odysseus at once and he has just enough strength to drop his ears and wag his tail but cannot get up to greet his master. Unable to greet his beloved dog, as this would betray who he really was, Odysseus passes by (but not without shedding a tear) and enters his hall, and Argos dies. The simplicity of the relationship between Argos and Odysseus allows their reunion to be immediate and sincere.[1]

LordMalice6d9 They couldn't because the mythical elements take up most of the Odyssey.
@dhorn40056 жыл бұрын
A lot of thosse myths they where actually based on real shit, like Escila y Caribdis, being two sea monsters that in reallity describe a quite perilous sea route of the Mediterranean. They could as well done it by making those elements more belibable. Witch Cyce could use drugs to maintain him in the island; the syrens could be an all-women pirate trybe, Polyphemus could be a regular big man... Illiad is FULL of mythical stuff (including Gods appearing mid battle; magical mist that saves Paris live, an armour forged by hephaestus for Aquiles,...) and they ommited all of them quite well in this one.

This scripting for Odysseus is perfect. He was a trickster to his core, and loved disguising his true motives, and even his identity. In the Odyssey, Odysseus is able to trick the cyclops into believing his name was "Nobody." When Odysseus and his men blinded the cyclops and made their escape, the cyclops was unable to call his brethren for help, crying in pain that "Nobody had blinded him" This was such a well-built and authentic scene in a movie that took a lot of liberties with the Iliad. They absolutely should have kept it

Semyon Galtsev The only reason I watch the Director's cut! A lot of great scenes added, but they mixed up the order of scenes at one part, and they really botched the musical score especially in places where they didn't need to. I have both versions and I still switch to the Theatrical version at the sacking of Troy. After watching it again the other day I think I need to make that switch earlier, like after the scene after this one
