To avoid maiden crashes I install an Aura 5 Lite in most of my planes as it keeps the plane level and once I get to a safe altitude I switch it off to trim the plane. It also has an assisted launch feature for hand launching that gives me enough time to launch the plane myself and then get back to the sticks.

Really like the 727. I've never 3D printed a plane and this one might be my first. Would like to scale it up by 50% to slow it down and better visibility.
@TroyMcMillan
@TroyMcMillan 7 ай бұрын
That was the goal for this plane to inspire people to build it as a first plane. It is small cheap and easy to build to get into the hobby. That is the beauty of this hobby you can definitely try and scale it up in Cura to print it out a bit larger you may have to do some custom fab to get some of the electronics to fit.

Perhaps you should mention that the servos should be centred before being glued into position, particularly the aileron servos. Most new builders might not remember to do this. Otherwise, I’m really enjoying your videos and looking forward to print the 727. I most likely will enlarge it to accept a 64 mm and light weight retracts.
@TroyMcMillan

Very nice aircraft, one main problem that i have with it is that the engine exhaust is a bit too big. Maybe use smaller edfs in the other two engine pods or move it in the no. 2 engine intake. It just really bothers me. Other than that, its an absolutely beautiful model.

is the EDF less efficient because there is no direct intake from the front? or it doesn't really matter?
@TroyMcMillan

It doesn’t matter here. There are intake vents all along the underside of the plane so the EDF is getting plenty of airflow. I also did thrust tests to make sure that the EDF had max performance

I do enjoy the convenience of re-printing parts over sourcing them locally or online. I too have crashed a 3d printed version on the maiden and it hurt, but pain is learning and I learned a lot. I will take a 3d printed plane/ 3d printed drone over a factory one any day when it is just flying for fun and pushing limits. When I want great video or all the features, I prefer my DJI drone or my micro turbo timber.

Heres a tip that works for me during handlaunches if you own Spektrum. Use an AR636 receiver with SAFE and if you have the Spektrum programmer use the Eflite 64mm F-15 template when you reprogram the receiver. Myself and a few club members have used this method in a dozen or more handlaunch planes and with SAFE active during launch the plane will not dive into the ground.

Just bought your files. Amazing Job. One question: A 4900KV EDF/3S will have enough power to fly this airplane with a 3s Battery? The PLA version. Are the wheels really glued or did you make something to make them spin? Thanks in advance.
@TroyMcMillan
@TroyMcMillan 6 ай бұрын
That power system will work just fine for the PLA version. For the landing gear, the rim is glued to the strut and the tire is designed to be printed using PLA. The tire is not supposed to be glued. It is designed to spin around the rim.

Hi Troy, I've just finished printing Fuselage 1 STL, what an amazing job you did making a spiralized print, can't imagine the hours to put together the model. Can't wait to see the end result! Quick question, what's the recommended KV for the EDF? I bought a 4300KV, would that make the job? Again, kudos for the design, don't want to diminish the work from other vendors but having a no retraction print is freaking amazing!

@TroyMcMillan

Ya it works pretty well the 50mm EDF produces 950g of thrust on a 4s battery and the LW-PLA plane is only 780g RTF so it has over a 1 to 1 ratio The PLA FedEx build it was 1100g RTF so just less that a 1 to 1 ratio.

Awesome I love that this will be your first build. A DC3 is definitely in the future for sure.

Every time I watch one of your videos I want to build another plane. I crash a lot too and always reprint a whole new fuse. How do you unglue the parts that are not damaged. Often the tail feathers are not damaged but I have never had any success with separating the rear fuse from the front. Any advice will be appreciated.
@TroyMcMillan
@TroyMcMillan 7 ай бұрын
I don't separate the glue. I just find the first seam that is not damaged and cut off the fuse there and sand the edge flat. Then I move the part that connects to that section slightly below the build plate in the slicer software to line up with the part I cut on the plane. Sometimes I add a few small table to the parts to glue them back together.

The CRJ is an awesome build also. The key reason I designed this plane is to make something a bit easier to start with but still a cool plane to inspire people to want to build it.

Troy hi. This 727-200 is perhaps the best 3d printable plane on the market. It was so easy to print and the finish was excellent in lw-pla. Only one issue. I fitted the FMS 50mm edf, but the mounting hole seems too big compared to the outside diameter of the fan housing? Your video does not show the 'fit' clearly enough. This is the only issue I have and I'm eager to finish the plane. Regards.

I too am using an FMS fan. I printed a simple 55.1mm diameter, 2 wall thick, cylindrical sleeve (23mm tall) to act as a spacer.

For a budget friendly printer, I’d say the Ender 3 v3 is great printer and quiet. The Kobra is also a good printer, I’ve used that before too. For the higher end, I’d say any printer by Bambu lab. Excellent quality and design of printer.

Im new to the hobby so i wonder is there a reason you handlaunch with the right hand? Wouldnt it be better to hold the radio with the right to have controll over elevator and ailerons instead of throttle and rudder?. Or is it a "i can throw better with my right hand" Situation? Honestly i think hand launches are scary :D

It is simply that I am right handed and want to throw with my dominate arm.

Amazing as always! Hoping you will design 3D models of the two coolest planes in history from my wish list, Cessna Sky Master, that’s the one with an engine in the front and another in the rear. A push pull. And from the 1930’s a Beach craft Stagger-wing.
