The problem with this witness is a familiar trait within the average Gambian society: the inability to think clearly and logically and to answer questions coherently. In psychology this is diagnosed as scattered brain. There are a number of explanations why this is common in Gambian Society. The first is lack of education or the very poor command of language be it English or any of the local dialects. In this case it is clear this witness cannot express himself in English effectively. He has no sense of the logic or clarity of what he is saying neither does he understand the grammar of the language. He may not necessarily be a liar. He is handicapped by having to think and answer questions in a language he has no command over. The effect of this as we see is the laborious effort and skill Counsel has to deploy to elicit the facts within a defined time line. The second explanation which should actually be the first is the poor instruction in language received from birth. This is the fault of parents. Often Parents don’t communicate effectively with children. By this I mean giving clear instruction followed by good factual explanation of reason, cause and effect while encouraging the child to respond and share their feelings freely. Most often, what parents and the society does is berate the child with commands and admonishment which leaves them confused and scared. Once the damage is inflicted at this formative years it is practically impossible to cure this defect. This is why children who have had formative years in the West have a far more developed reasoning skills and command of language than the average Gambian child. Often I am intrigued when I see parents in the West explaining very educatively and interactively to their children things around them. An interesting case study is that of the Senegalese society. Despite having similar social structures to that found in The Gambia, the Senegalese are effective communicators both in their local dialects and French. They are very coherent, logical clear and persuasive. This is attributable to the fact that they have far stronger command of the languages and dialects in their society. In the case of The Gambia this deficiency in communication is part of the root causes of poverty and under development. Unless, this is addressed there is little chance of any meaningful sustainable development in the Gambia.
