The long videos with all the dirty details are great. Don't worry about the length. I really appreciate learning about the depths of the whole system which you only get from the false starts and dead ends, and all that extra time gives me a chance to actually absorb and remember some of it. Not to mention it's a much better reflection of reality--at least *my* reality when troubleshooting something!

We totally can skip ahead if we want to - not that I ever was bored on Adrian's video. Even if you make mistakes - everyone does - we will gladly learn from those and be thankful. You can cut probing all 16 lanes if they look the same, and repeated disassembly-reassembly too, but other than that - leave everything in.

One warning for when you put the whole thing back together: the 80-column horizontal sync depends on a little varcap in the middle of the motherboard, and the CRT will not sync to 80 columns if it is incorrect. I'm pretty sure it drifts over the years too, making the chance that it needs adjustment approach 100%.. This might also be why your HDMI converter is having problems. The difference is that a CRT will show something if the sync is wrong, but digital converters might blank the video.
@jwhite5008

Yes! (Had no idea about the variable capacitor, or model 4, but this makes a lot of sense in this situation) Leaving the comment here so that youtube may give it more priority.

I don’t mind the length. I understand that these tear downs, repairs, etc can never be set in stone time wise. It’s illogical to think otherwise. Sometimes a video does have to wait a few days till I get a chance to watch the whole thing, or it’s broken up and watched on breaks or the like. I love these videos. Especially the repair ones, and the longer they are the more I know it’s gonna be a good one! Keep up the amazing work, Adrian. I admire your work ethic and passion. I try to personally emulate that in my personal and work life.

I like the long videos. People can always skip ahead if it's something they're not interested in specifically. But for example, I have a model 4p, which basically works, and I've been wanting to open it up, but knew it was going to be a real hassle, seeing that teardown on what to do, and not do was very helpful to me.

These videos are such a nostalgia trip for me. I started with a Model I before it was called a Model I, wrestling with the cassette interface, then had a Model III, got disk drives for it, then later moved to a Model IV. This like a throwback to when I was a teenager and wrote genealogy software and financial management stuff but never knew how to sell it. Wonderful throwback to that bygone era when discovery was magic, Creative Computing was THE magazine of choice, and the IBM PC was yet to arrive. So many fun memories of that golden age.
@melkiorwiseman5234
@melkiorwiseman5234 Жыл бұрын
The cassette interface in the original Model I had a bug which meant that it was possible for it to read a 1 as a 0 off the tape, especially if either the tape or the player were even slightly sub-prime. The ROM BASIC code was later adjusted to compensate for the error so that tape storage became more reliable.

I like the longer videos. I’m usually feeling up to speed with the topics you cover; Often the most enjoyable aspects of your videos are brief off-hand comments: you reasoning aloud about a particular symptom, or rhetorically offering a brief bit of insight into why a troubleshooting approach I’d have waited to pursue is in the forefront of your mind. It’s often those moments that leaving me feeling like I really learned something scarce and valuable. As much as I enjoy the rare cases where I’m maybe one step ahead of you and I’m yelling at the screen; it’s the times I’m left a bit shellshocked by your experience and insightfulness that are my favorite. ❤

The videos I enjoy the most on KZbin are ones I can just sit back and relax with some food without worrying about having to find another video or two before I finish eating. KZbin saves the position of the video you were at if you pause and come back later, so I don't see any real reason to make short videos unless it's for ad revenue or viewer demographics (ie; short attention span kids). They do attract more random clicks if someone gets the video pushed to them.. but at the same time I personally believe that they detract from the established viewerbase of the channel who are more into long form videos, as evident by the comments on this one. Either way, it's always up to the content creator to decide how they want their content out there. But if making longer videos cuts down on the editing work required, I'm all for it!

Ah, a stroll down memory lane. I bought a TRS-80 Model I in 1980 (because Apple II was "too expensive"). After various upgrades (expansion, memory, dual floppies), I probably spent as much as the Apple II would have cost out of the box. Oh well. Sold my Model I and bought this computer (the Model 4P) because it was "portable" (wink) and because it ran CP/M and that seemed to be all the rage at the time. But a lot of CP/M software seemed to need a lot of work to get running (kind of like Linux LOL!). Finally sold the 4P and got myself a Macintosh Plus, beginning a lifelong devotion to all things Mac. Which led to a job at Apple a couple years later, and from which I retired in 2015. What fun! Adrian, keep up the detail. These videos are fascinating!!

Your videos are of good content and length. You clearly have a good way of explaining the items you're working on, and this shows with the amount of subscribers and patrons you have - you actually have a good subs/patrons ratio! You're one of my sample channels I am analysing, amongst some others. Also, you're voice is clear and concise, not like my mumbling voice on my videos.
I wasn't expecting this fault with this CoCo 1 motherboard
