Africa Matters: Namibia's Oil Potential

Portuguese oil company Galp Energia says it has discovered billions of barrels of oil in Namibia's Mopane field. It joins TotalEnergies and Shell, who have all struck black gold in the last two years. This could signal massive economic potential but what will it mean for the nearly three million Namibians?
April 27 marks the 30th anniversary of Freedom Day in South Africa. That's when millions of Black South Africans exercised their right to vote for the first time. But three decades later, one in four young people are jobless.
And Nigeria accounts for about 27% of all malaria cases worldwide and the highest number of deaths. But the country is fighting back with treated mosquito nets which can reach more people than vaccines.

The minute you have foreigners exploring oil for you, then you will not have the greater benefit.

Why Africa cannot have their own exploration oil companies, and stop having foreign companies do their exploration for themselves.

Dude, stop being ignorant and study what is happening in British Guiana... a small country in South America with only 800 thousand inhabitants and which in the next 2 and 3 years will have a GDP per capita greater than that of the USA.. This will only happen because this country has opened its oil market to international capital.

Oil exploration requires vast capital and technical skills to mitigate the risk. S Arabia Aramco and Norway Equinor, formerly known as Statoil, became partners with Western energy companies and later became significant energy players.

How is he being ignorant? His question is quite reasonable. People with your mentality would have Africans forever fighting for crumbs We know for a fact that frequently the countries possessing the minerals do not benefit greatly from them and also the wealth generated is often not distributed equitably. Your response to his question is quite ignorant and unfortunate..@@altentic8616

This oil revenue should be used to develop the BLACK indigenous people of Namibia. They should receive free education at all levels, free health care etc.

About 5 years ago, British Guiana in South America opened its oil exploration market to international capital, and today it is the fastest growing country in the world. In 2022 alone it grew by $62 and in 2023 it grew by 44%. Therefore, its GDP per capita will be greater than most European countries and even Switzerland.

Namibia should reach out to Guyana (another lightly populated state) with huge natural resources. Guyana has discovered large oil reserves recently too.
