Is it time to reform the House of Lords?

The robes and pageantry might seem old fashioned. The House of Lords has also been called undemocratic and indefensible - and that’s just by Opposition leader Keir Starmer - who is odds-on to be the next Prime Minister.
The Conservatives won’t be too happy with the Lords at the moment either - the House has just delayed the government’s bill to send Asylum seekers to Rwanda again.
But how likely is it that any party actually can and would overhaul the centuries-long system of Parliament in the UK? And what might any alternative look like?
Joining us this week are two members of the House of Lords. Mike German, who wants a fully elected second chamber, and Kulveer Ranger, who believes in less drastic reform.
Westminster Watch is a discussion program, Broadcast out of London and presented by Politician-turned-presenter Nick de Bois.
From fierce debate to reflective thinking, Nick offers you the inside track on all the happenings inside the corridors of power in Westminster.

This is just my crazy idea. Have 300 members, 150 appointed experts in their fields elected to 10 year terms. 150 random national insurance numbers selected from members of the public for two year terms. It would be like prolonged jury service but with very good salary to incentivise people to say yes. They would we able to veto legislation but only with 60% vote.

One man one vote for the lower house. Proportional vote for the Upper House. The proportional vote makes it difficult for any party to have a majority. So making for free and fair debate. No more governments rubber stamping laws into being.

Fully elected around 300, representing all the nations and regions of the UK; however, would be non-partisan and therefore would run as independents!

It would be interesting if, for example, you divide the UK into 41 senate districts. Each district would send three people to the Senate, for a total of 123 members. One of the three would be elected by popular vote, every five or ten years. This would give the people direct power of election to the senate. The second person would be a senator appointed by the monarch on advice of the prime minister of whichever party gains power. This way, the people who belong to the party in power would have an indirect election as their prime minister.would be making the selection. The third person would be a hereditary senator who would hold that position for life (or age 75 etc). This person would not have to worry about the pendulum swinging back and forth in the political arena. They could focus on doing what I have read that the lords are actually good at, bringing people of long terrn experience and expertise to vetting bills from the Commons. This could be an already existing peer or a new one made by the usual process of creating a peer. This would therefore be a mix of elected, appointed, and hereditary senators. The senate would elect a speaker in the same manner as the Commons. Forty-one districts would prevent a tie vote. Having three people from each district would also prevent tie votes if the district became split between parties. Just a fun mind game to play. There are probably a lot of problems with this.
