I was about 5 miles from home sitting in a tractor when the call came out almost didn't go but it was south of us kind of in our area I figured somebody would leave from the close station and I would meet them there but nobody was around town so three trucks came from our farthest station

@@jrockyhill Being close enough to put your hands in the vehicle isn't being "upwind". Cancer doesn't give a damn, and that truck wasn't worth the risk. Plus, Mag will burn right through that wildland coat you're wearing. (I assume that's what it is, because full turnouts would have a liner to protect your wrists.) Be safe.

Man you’re aggressive which ordinarily is a good thing, but you’re taking way too many risks not wearing the correct gear for these situations. I hate to say it but I fear you or one of your crew are going to get seriously hurt if you don’t start slowing down and thinking what you’re doing through. And I’m not trying to belittle you or criticize you just for the sake of it, I’m talking as a Captain on a rural FD, you risk a lot to save a lot, risk a little to save a little, and risk nothing to save nothing. You’re risking a lot, to save nothing. Pulling burning debris out by hand, big no no, use a pike pole, that’s what they’re for. Your department looks like it needs some serious, structured command, training and instruction on how to do what you’re doing. The enthusiasm is there, you guys just need more guidance.

I've put in 40 years as a volunteer, all the way from probationary firefighter to Chief of the department. I started out rarely using an SCBA and now I'm paying the price for it. Our firefighters are required to wear packs at all structure and vehicle fires along with all PPE. They are required to have a minimum of firefighter 1 as well. PPE should be made mandatory for everyone operating on a fire scene, if someone gets hurt or killed one of the first questions that's going to be ask by insurance and accident investigators is was all PPE being used? The insurance company could refuse payment if not, and department officers could be held liable for not following national standards. And if my safety equipment is going to get me back home to my family, I'm going to use it.
