Nice truck ! In '92 I bought an '88 Western Star conv. with a 63" sleeper, 3406B 425 Cat and 15spd. Nice clean non-smoker truck with 370k miles. It was at the KW dealer here in Concord, N.H.. As part if the deal I had them do rod and main bearings and oil pump as a precaution due to the mileage. I knew these engines had head gasket issues but this one hadn't had that yet. On my 2nd trip back from Texas I picked up a load of empty aerosol cans at US Can in Horsham, Pa. going to Wilmington, Ma. which would get me home. Went to leave the dock in Pa. and the engine hydro-locked. Head gasket had failed and filled #6 hole with coolant. Pulled the rocker box cover off and held the exhaust valve open with a bar and was able to start it. Drove a couple miles to a truckstop and called Cat. Got a number from a service manager friend for a guy in management at Cat in Peoria, Ill.. 4 years into a 5 year warranty from new, and because I was 2nd owner, he only would authorize a 5% dealer participation !! Even after I said this is a wellknown issue with these engines. Luckily I found a huge Cat place in Pa. that went 50% with me because he knew what Cat was doing was wrong, but it still cost me over $7k, but I had a complete in-chassis with 100k mile warranty. So in '93 I ordered a brand new Pete 379, ext. hood, heavy spec. day cab to pull my dump trailer. And you know there wasn't gonna be a Cat in that !!!! Series 60 Detroit, 430 hp. I loved that engine. It was my only electronic one, and I was averaging over 6 mpg running 99,000 lbs. Of course empty one direction most times but it was just 50 mile radius home nightly. So that's my story about Cat. I had 5 trucks running at one point---2 triaxle Mack dumps, 2 dump trailers (a W900 and a Freightliner FLD), and of course that Western Star road tractor. I've been to about 3/4 of the country, with the exception of the upper northwest ( Washington, Oregon, Dakotas, etc.). Just never got there. I went all the way to Hillsboro, Wisconsin from Massachusetts in my first tractor, a 1965 Mack B67 single axle with the 711 naturally aspirated engine and Mack "duplex" 2 stick tranny. 62 mph top speed at 2150 rpm ! That was back in '78. How trucking has changed, huh ?!!! I'm 75 now and living vicariously through all you guys and gals !! Stay safe man and catch ya in the next one !

You have such a beautiful truck! I know you miss your Coronado too! My truck wasn't like yours. It was an extended hood company truck. It had the cabinets in the back. Your truck is a custom job! We all so much appreciate you, Bandit! Nobody should EVER bother you! You showed your truck, and that in itself is a gift! I imagine that you have a family and they depend on you greatly. May you always stay safe on and off the road. May your family remain happy and safe until your return, but meanwhile they can watch you here too, have fun and laugh! It's all about happiness and love. The way you deal with people have blessed you in so many ways! There's no changing anything that is working with zero issues. The ones who are the most encouraging are fellow truckers, those who family that has truckers and friends. That shows in the comments. I myself had to leave the road. I've been to all of the Canadian provinces but not on the way to Alaska. I just wanted to go everywhere and they didn't mind at all arranging that! I've had my fill of New York and the "Garbage State," N.J. What most of them would do would just load me out to West Coast so they wouldn't hear my mouth.🤣You bring back memories and I thank you that. Keep on Trucking Up! 😊 -Smurfette

I expected to see a CAT under the hood but you surprised me, sick combination and you manage to get really good mpg on it. That truck is a damn keeper for sure. I enjoyed the video. Very nice truck. I use a generator and the portable AC and space heater instead of idling my truck. I much prefer doing that instead of idling my truck. My generator will generally run about eight hours without having to be shut down for refueling or being otherwise being checked. And my generator is much quieter than an APU and much cheaper to operate and much less expensive when purchased. I have been using the same generator and portable AC and space heaters since 2016. Everything has been very reliable.
@tubofpopcorn72427 ай бұрын
Where do u put the generator when it’s running?
@OTRBandit7 ай бұрын
I like it. It saves allot of money and engine wear by not idling. And it gets freezing in my sleeper from that ac unit. I love it.
@OTRBandit7 ай бұрын
I keep mine right there on the catwalk. If you buy smaller one, you can put it by your landing gear and tie it with the chain so that nobody steals it at night. I’ve seen people keep smaller ones under their bed and bring them outside when they need them.
@ronnieterry49167 ай бұрын
@tubofpopcorn7242 I put the generator behind the sleeper on the platform area. I also keep it locked so it doesn't walk off the truck . I carry my gasoline in what is called a safety can. I carry the gasoline in one of my tool boxes. I have everything organized and it takes a very few minutes to generator running and the AC or portable heater blowing cold or warm air. I very much prefer this instead of idling my truck engine.
@ronnieterry49167 ай бұрын
@tubofpopcorn7242 When the generator is running I put it against the front of the trailer as I already mentioned it is locked to a secure part of the truck. Or sometimes I set it on the front of the step deck trailer if I'm doing flat bed. But when I'm doing dry van I leave the generator on the step platform between the front of the trailer and the back of the sleeper area. My generator is the 5000 wat Honda generator it only weighs eighty pounds and has a suitcase handle on the top area. When it is raining I cover the generator with a piece of cardboard paper folded around the generator with the ends open.

Very nice truck. I actually currently have a friend doing DG with Werner in the North East and yeah, it is a hard job unloading all that product, especially when the bills say 700 pieces but there are 1200 on the trailer for that store. Guess I also figured out how companies like Peterbilt and KW have managed to keep their long nose trucks in production for so long, they eventually sold them as glider kits to bypass the regulations that would have otherwise forced them to stop production. Personally noting, I am definitely a fan of Freightliner, especially the new generation Cascadia, DD knew what they were doing when they designed the emissions systems and I've only had one truck fail to an emissions issue and I can't really say it failed as the dealer just ran a hard regen on it for like 2 hours and it was fine after that, no more issues. But they are very roomy, lots of storage space, ride nice and turn on a dime. As much as I do enjoy a good long nose truck, for what I would be doing, I would likely find a new generation Cascadia as an owner op. Right now I am with a fleet that runs heavy on the T680's and I personally don't like how cramped they feel. But to each their own, and yes the ELD definitely goes against a company driver hard as it can force driving when fatigued, thankfully I have never been with a company that forced me into driving when I was tired, even if the log allowed me to run. I can see it working better for owner ops who set their schedule themselves, you run from x time to x time and you book your loads according to your daily routine.
@OTRBandit7 ай бұрын
I would not do Dollar General work as a company driver. He just doesn’t pay enough in my opinion for that type of work. As an operator, I would do it every day for the rest of my life. Because as an operator, I was getting paid for one days work as much as those guys were making in two weeks.. if I had to drive an emissions truck, I Would Definitely drive Freightliner Cascadia. I had 2008 freightliner Cascadia and there was so much more room inside of it than inside the Peterbilt and the radius better than this one.

I was lucky one time. I like to hold on to a few bits and pieces of things. I broke an air hose one time, so i look through a few things and i found a small piece of copper tubing and hose clamps, so i cut the sir hose and shoved the tuning inside the hose and use the clamps, that worked great until i go to the dealers to buy a couple of new air hoses. I am good at piecing little things together, as i call it jury rigging things.

I’m the same way my friend. I hoard things because I never know when I’ll need it. I once fixed my busted coolant hose with the bicycle tire tube. It held for 70 miles until I got to Breezwood, PA Truckstop

Future topic or segment while driving down the road on how you started up your own authority. Tips or things to avoid when getting that process started. Coming up on two years with my license/company driver with the goal of eventually getting my own rig and authority. Safe travels boss man!

Since it was a glider could you put your rebuild engine in it? How many miles on the engine itself? I love love the color of your truck!!! Thanks for finally doing this video!
@OTRBandit7 ай бұрын
Thank you very much. I could put any engine in it I want since it’s a glider. I don’t know how many miles was on the engine before it was rebuilt and put in my truck. But there’s little over 400K on it right now.

Very nice rig. Question can u elaborate on the desai heater u have I like that idea of the ac and heater thanks again be safe
@OTRBandit7 ай бұрын
Diesel heat is also called bunk heater. It comes with a small fuel tank for your diesel or you can tap directly into your truck tanks. It runs on batteries while your truck is turned off and it provides heat. It probably uses less than one gallon of diesel a day. But to run your ac, you will need generator like the one that I have.

I think it’s a also fair to mention that the government put Fitzgerald out of business because of those Glider-Kits, by fining them $89.9 Million Dollars for back taxes owed to the government. In other words the government made Fitzgerald pay for all the money lost 😡 from making those Glider Kits. INNOVATION AND CAPITALISM, I admire anyone that can beat it. The Bandit Truly earns his name, The OTR Bandit. Or actually The Midwest Regional Bandit, if he went OTR, the Bears would eat him alive. How much longer can you last Bandit? The US GOVERNMENT ARE THE TRULY REAL JESSE JAMES BANDITS. Keep us posted, it has to be getting real tough for you. Good Luck!
@OTRBandit7 ай бұрын
Government sure did put Fitzgerald out of business and all the other glider makers. It was EPA to be exact. They made a ruling on how many gliders can be produced each year and it was not worth making them for anybody.. I am pretty sure government will come up with something pretty soon to where everybody is going to have to run ELD somehow. They hate it that some of us are not leashed with that ELD bullshit.

@@OTRBandit , Absolutely, whatever you decide Bandit, I hope you get out with your head above water. Over the years I’ve seen so many drivers wait until the BITTER END when it’s way too Late, some are SO SICK 🤒 they can hardly walk anymore. Life after trucking is always the HARDEST, especially for guys that ignore all the Warning Signs and stick around to the Bitter End.
