Truckers Wicking Tub From Totes, Ep 138

Caring for plants with an extended watering wicking tub made from totes. Make sure for the watering tube that it is located through a hole into the tote where the water is located. This will require drilling into the tote at the top to place the fill tube. The size hole will be determined by the size of the fill tube.

A hole will need to be drilled in the top of the bottom tote to place the fill tube. Previous videos show how this is accomplished. Leon did not mention this in the video. Sorry for overlooking this item.

Mr. Leon, late summer this year I made my first wicking tubs from these same totes. I used your slotted drain pipe technique and am happy to report that the broccoli I grew in them did fantastically. I can't wait till next season, thank you for all you do.

I use the crates. But I use soil to plant. I cut a hole on each side of about 2 - 3 inches up on each side. I place ingredients at say ..bottom of fruit trees. Then I plant in crate and or in buckets that have holes on side ...placed in soil a bit. Works great.

Good morning Mr Leon I hope you are healthy this spring. We've been using your gardening method for 2 years and have had wonderful results except for the squirrels eating my strawberries. Lol :-). I have beautiful flower pots that have a single hole at the bottom. I'm wondering if you could make a video on how to use your wicking method with these pots. They cost so much to buy. I don't want to not use them.

Put hand on tote. Water is cooler than air. Especially if sitting on ground. A little water if u think it's empty. Any food-grade container will work. Free sometime from big or something restaurant s. 5 gallon bucket will grow a tomato plant if not the largest ones

I live in Los Angeles and have been doing the single tub self-watering for 2 years. Works well, but now I see this double-boiler setup and I wonder how high of a water level do you fill the bottom reservoir? I would think six inches maximum. Any thoughts on this? Thanks, , , ,

Have you figured out a way to extend your watering time? The only way I can think of is to have a external reservoir with a float valve to control the input. It would connect to your wicking tubs. The reservoir and all the wicking tubs would have to be level with each other.

@@donskin9795 My only purpose of extending watering time is when I go on a trip for a week. I wanted to come up with a way to slow drip from the top to feed the plant to conserve what is in the container for 1 or 2 extra days. I realize this might not encourage the plants roots to go deeper and may be harmfull to the root ball . I used a 32 gauge pin needle to make a hole in a gallon jug. This needle is the smallest made . I tried using other types of needles and the water came out too fast. After 48 hours there was still about a quart of fertilizer in the jug. The base of the plant was real moist. The quart left over might be because of the reduced pressure. I covered the base of the jug with potting soil to prevent evaporation and I made a little insulating cover for the gallon jug to control temperature.

Do you use tap water to fill the tank. Do you add nutrients to your water.

I would use tap water. And I doubt fertilizer in water - he would have said so.

Thank you for a very informative video. I purchased one exactly like that at Lowes but then I found out that the plastic is made of ( polypropylene) would not last in the sun as the other planters I made over ten years ago using Rubbermaid which is made from a different kind of plastic and I am still using. Polypropylene can loose 70% of its strength in just six days of Sun light exposure. From an article from the University of North Carolina : Because of the chemical structure of polypropylene, it has a high degradation rate when exposed to UV light like the Sun. The light causes the bonds holding the polymer together to break which weakens the plastic. This makes polypropylene unsuitable for uses that require longterm exposure to sunlight.

Didn't want to cut the top off a single 5 gallon bucket... Proceeds to cut the bottoms of 3 smaller buckets. 🤷🏼‍♂️🤦🏼‍♂️

Sometime 10 small buckets are cheaper than one bigger bucket.
