This video is about how to tie a truckie's hitch to secure a load.
This is one of a series of videos about knots and stuff, aimed at Scouts. The selection of knots is aligned with the Australian Scout program. To access the whole collection go to hchick.net/Knots/

Beautifully simple and easy to recall. I like other techniques but yours will reign supreme. Thank you Helen. 5:22

Best video explanation I've seen. Because english is not my native language, and most of the terminology used in these types of videos is unknown to me, I end up closing most videos for not understanding what's being done. Even so, I realize that I don't even need to know English to understand your video explanation.

Congratulations, you are one of the few who know how to make this knot correctly, most of those listed here on KZbin use knots that after use do not untie.

2:39 Using only a single loop at the "top" can allow that loop to roll down the length of the rope, releasing the tension (ymmv). I suggest two loops, or a lark's head, to secure the bight.

Alternately, add a second turn around the bight behind the first loop, as per this video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/i2ioYWiOqsSBnqc

Good demo, I would agree though with D.H. The first half hitch serves to carry the load, a second half hitch will hold the the eye upright, preventing the hitch from capsizing. That second hitch is a no-cost addition, I think I will continue to use 2 hitches to make-up the truckies hitch.

Automatic inline trucker hitch. Make a bite loop leaving some slack on the first anchor point, point the bite to your right, make loop over it with the working end twice, pull this coil off the bite, flip it over and put it back on the bite. You just made a black wall hitch using your working end as its anchor point. Now make a larkshead just above this and put the end over your original loop through it and tighten by pulling on the loose end of the rope. Now you can pull on the end of the rope and every bit of tension will become trapped in the working end. It basically turns a rope into an instant ratchet strap. When your done simply tug the end of the line backwards threw the black wall hitch and the knot falls apart. Secure the end of the line while traveling so it can’t work its way somehow back through the black wall hitch on its own.

@helenchick9640
@helenchick9640 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you. Its security does rely on having tension on it (it is essentially half a sheepshank, and that relies on having tension as well)

@@helenchick9640 Yes....try putting the bight through a larks head instead of the single loop...same thing but lot more secure....and still simple and easy to undo.

I loved your presentation and li looks like a significant improvement over the traditional truckers hitch. Two question came for me…. 1.) does it release easily after a stressing the line? 2.) could it be used to shorten a winch extension line without damage to the rope?
@helenchick9640

@helenchick9640
@helenchick9640 3 жыл бұрын
Ahh, I didn’t really show that did I (although I think I said on the first demo run through)?! Take it down to the anchor, keeping the tension on it, and tie off with a clove hitch or a round turn and two half hitched. Alternatively, if the rope is long enough and you have more load to cover, take it around the anchor, keeping tension on it, and keep going with tying down the load, finishing with another truckie’s hitch and then securing with a clove hitch or RT&2HH.

This knot has the risk of coming undone if the rope is slippery when you pull.
@helenchick9640
@helenchick9640 3 жыл бұрын
Like many knots it depends on which kind of rope you are using. And this knot, like the sheepshank, really depends on having tension on it (in fact, the truckie's hitch is essentially half a sheepshank). Once the tension is loosened it is very easy to undo it.

Glad to provide you with an insomnia cure. The video was made for Scouts, and so helping people understand why things work and what it was for, was part of my purpose. I apologise for the sound; it was made during lockdown and I had limited time and resources because I was trying to make quite a few different videos. There are plenty of other alternatives on the internet.
