You'll never get the strap tight enough rolling it up on the winch. Pull the strap all the way through the winch. Then take end of strap and fold until you have all the strap folded. Then stick between the strap and trailer. Then take winch bar. And tighten winch. Tighten your load down. As long as you have 3 to 4 wraps around winch to prevent slipping the better. Less strap on winch the tighter you can get your load down. You will never get a strap fully tighten the way it's shown in video

The fold method is better. You almost never have to worry about loose straps.wrapping the majority of your strap around the winch will generate slack over the duration of the trip. plus the fold method provides padding for the strap. Plus don,t hook to the rub-rail, place hook under the the trailer. Your load should not be secured to anything that is meant to be rubbed on. TB is right....this time..lol.
@traviswyatt3944
@traviswyatt3944 4 жыл бұрын
You must not haul very tall loads, have you checked the prices on straps lately? Pretty expensive for 40+ footers. Attaching to the rub rail on trailers that are rated for it is an accepted and legal option. Most trailers manufactured and sold nowadays have rub rails rated for in excess of 5600 lbs between the chain spools/stake pockets. Lemme ask you this, if your rub rails are not acceptable to hook your straps too, then why are your winch slides slightly behind and underneath? All the flatbed trailers that I pull behind my truck are set up to run winches on both sides, and do not have a spot designed to hook a strap to. It's either the rub rail or the frame of the trailer, which adds an additional 4 feet of strap needed. Plus, it also subjects the strap to road debris. I'll take my chances with the rub rail.

NEVER ROLL THOSE STRAPS UP IN THE WINCH, run it through the winch and fold the access, and tighten and it will stay tight, if you roll all that strap up it will loosen, AND NEVER STRAP TO THE SKID, when I haul those I use chain and boomers and cross tie it through the lifting lugs on the transformers and they are safe to haul.

One thing Lo does but doesn't explain is to take the strap all the way out of the binder, roll it up stripe out, hook last, and put it in the box. When you wind them up on the slider and leave them they are out in the rain and grime, snow, salt, you get grit in your binders, it's dirty. Roll towards the hook last so you are not throwing the hook over the load and maybe brain somebody on the other side you don't see. And maybe take a lighter to that first strap and melt the frays down. Oh Tom and Jerry is on Boom Network. Looks like a mix of old and new episodes.

I drive for a building supply store. We leave the straps on the trucks so no one's stealing them between them. Our ratchet straps are mixed all up due to everyone grabbing from each truck. We slip seat depending on number of drivers day to day and load needs. Most days I use almost all of grvstaps besides the hand ratchets for each load. Other days I add extras.

For those saying don’t put the hook on the rub rail it really depends on your trailer some trailers the rail has no rating for a working load limit and others like the the one I pull are rated and legal but a Wilson trailer on the other hand you have to hook under the trailer because the rail has no rating you should be able to find the info on you trailers for what all securement points are and there rating

Why you strapping it over the weak wood? I just started truck driving but that looks like a dangerous option. All the weight is in the machine which is only bolted down into the wood frames. So you are essentially using all those straps to hold down the wood. All the weight will shift and crack the wood around from the bolt.
@traviswyatt3944
@traviswyatt3944 4 жыл бұрын
Having hauled these before, I can tell you that you are NOT authorized by the shipper or receiver to strap over top of the load. It damages the load, and makes you as the carrier liable for the repairs. They hold very well, and do not come apart. If they do, it's on the shipper to fix it.

@stuff happens, basically what he's saying is when you pick up at customers like this that manufacturer transformers, AC units or anything of the like, you never, ever, ever throw any kind of securement over the top. It causes damage to the units and those units are expensive. Some manufacturers will actually ban you from returning if they see a strap or see you in the act of throwing a strap over the unit. A lot of trucking companies in most cases once you have been banned from a customer will terminate you in order to protect their relationship with the customer. I used to pull a lot of equipment for Ditch Witch out of Oklahoma and at that place, drivers aren't allowed to secure the load at all. Merely just check everything to make sure its all tight and secure.

That shows you how to NOT properly secure a load. The transformers are the heaviest parts of the load, not the wood cradles. If they were steel cradles bolted onto wooden bases, then it would be more secure because the steel's breaking point would be much higher than the wood's. Not to mention the angle of the straps to the deck should not be less then 30 degrees, because at such a shallow angle the vertical force the straps apply is probably less than 30% of the force applied when the straps are perpendicular to the deck. In such a case it would be more secure to use chains and binders attached directly to the load. In all this is a poor example of load securment.
@adamplummer2190
@adamplummer2190 Жыл бұрын
Issue with these transformers is they aren't built to handle pressure on top, this they're ptesecured to the wood. I might run a safety strap over the top and snug it though just to feel safer. It won't be holding it, just a backup for saving lives.

@roger Wyatt It depends on the manufacturer and trailer model. Some manufacturers have started making their trailers with load rated rub rails as well as fully welded welded spools and stake pockets. Definitely don't expect this from a company like Utility though. You just have to check all the decals or data tags on a trailer to determine if the rub rail is load rated. On the other side one will find these trailers naturally more expensive than a cheap starter combo trailer.
