Alice. I used to be a "fan" of manual gear changing. Today the modern auto / manual selector that is / are available are very good and you can control the selection electronically which is a consideration factor when it comes to driver fatigue. Trust me when the age factor in inputted on long distance travelling in UK at my age (76) my ability to keep travelling is more relaxed .
@jessgibson4790
@jessgibson4790 Жыл бұрын
Hi Roger, like you I was pro manual until I started bumping into auto driving agency. Then I realized how much less strain played on me just from changing gears. You get so much less knackered with driving an auto. Retired now, but I don't even drive manual cars now, just don't see the point.
@tomh9807
@tomh9807 Жыл бұрын
The only thing what is annoying with the automated trucks in the US is that the lever is mounted at the steering column. That is causing fatigue more than anything else. The factor that you are in the UK I assume you have it in the right arm rest which you can swivel out of the way . Another problem here in the US is that manufacturers especially Eaton simply are not capable to find a proper shift speed . These trucks here shift too slow and at too low RPM in the full auto mode. The reason is allegedly to safe fuel but it really does not help in the mountains when I am forced to shift manually because otherwise i unnecessary loose power. Very bad is the new Freightliner which short of the top of a hill additionally cuts power and speed , so again i am forced to put my foot on the pedal to get over that hill. What crap engineering is that?

@@tomh9807 Hello Tom. First of all I now am 76 year "young" and I gave up UK HGV License 4 years ago as there was a time when you leave to the younger generation so my knowledge is somewhat not up to date. I spent my latter working years Testing Vehicles for Emissions Standards and Advance Fuels to see if they were as were "claimed to be by the product producer / supplier. Rule of thumb being that when you sat in a vehicle no matter what type if your hands and feet felt comfortable the fatigue factor was reduced considerably. You are I believe you are correct about the arm rest and for what manufactures perceive as the best position as the best layout and the ergonomics of their layout plus easy of manufacture. To my mind Paddle shifts are good as opposed to button pressing on the side of the stalk and you do not have to take your hands off the steering wheel but you still need to manually select the correct gear if required - so you have another selector to deal with and you need to be able to lock in that gear according the driving conditions. The problem is that we all drive different and the ECU is set for Fuel Economy and Vehicle Emissions on what they perceive the customer wants plus the power curve in the engine design. I know from experience in the UK Volvo took seriously Driver in put into design as were the "real" customer when a driver input was valued in purchase and preference. Today I have not idea to back that up if that is still true. I can well appreciate your frustration where you are climbing long hills and descending the same. It may be simplistic but the ECU can be programmed to multiple modes so why don't they do it in the USA just the same as adaptive cruise controls. OK so how - well you should be able to select say two other driving modes that are available to the driver where the programing allows you adapt to the terrain and load plus conditions. .e.g Holding on a higher RPM longer and a faster change shift. (Sport mode style) The other solution is to get your ECU Remapped as long as you keep your vehicle within that vehicle emissions certified limits!! Looks like Eaton need a rethink in more ways than one!! Well Tom that is the way I see it no doubt many other will not agree. Rog

@@dodgerpage Good day to the UK. You wrote a lot which was not about the fatique so it is irrelevant. I drove all kinds of trucks in Germany since 89, have been regularly to truck fairs in order to stay updated with all kinds of new techniques and since 07 here in US and Canada. I understand your point with the stick (not pedal, not a race car) shifting at the right side of the steering column and one constantly has to move its arm back to the steering wheel in order to shift. And that's exactly my point where i think it is better and easier to rest the arm on the arm rest where the (european trucks) have the shifter. In the case of an emergency one simply pushes a button or moves the lever for shifting instantly and no need to move the arm up to the stick near the steering wheel loosing split seconds. These can make a difference. U know what i am saying? But the the thing here with the trucks and more with the truckers and those little differences in my opinion is lazyness in general. Little example is the still unsychronised clutching. And by the way the thing with fuel consumption is another topic what is branded into peoples mind. I mean i, too check frequently where it is a bit cheaper but when the tank is empty and i need to fuel i top it up, no matter what. As a driver here overseas i already have to watch so many things like regulations ec that i don't care where and when I fuel. I have a dedicated route of 3100 miles in 4.5 days, so it's usually the same spots where I fuel which is twice on the road and one more time back near my home terminal for the next trip. All the best to you and the UK and leave Harry and Meagan alone. 🤣✌️👍

Martin great explanation on the difference between an automatic and a automated transmission. I drove Allison type transmissions years ago and hated them. Great video and narrative. I'm from Canada and I ran I-80 and I 70. Wyoming is a real treat and the hills. I ran an automatic in a 12 speed M-drive MP8 505 HP pulling a 5 axle grossing 139000 lbs in Northern Ontario. WE haul heavy up here and winter is a challenge. The automatic is nice but takes gettting used to and 4 wheel lock is an option you need. Take cane and be safe out there. '

Busted huh? What happened to Drivewyze? Alice you sounded like you were back to your chipper self. I take it you kicked the bug. At the 4:00 mark it looked like the SUV on the left was going to rear end the pickup. An other video with a freight train..Just glad you didn't have to go potty when you were sitting in traffic on I-70. When you were talking about the transmission I have a DCT in my car. It's a 6 speed. Some of the buses I used to drive had the Aztronics ZF 10 & 12 speed electronic/manual transmission. There were times when doing multi bus road trips the ZF was getting better MPG than the buses with the Allison 500 6 speed automatics. You guys stay safe out there. Trucks AND Trucking has evolved enormously in the last thirty years. I had a relative who drove for a living and TEAM driving was still considered a novelty! They had a Kenworth with a manual. In those days you had to teach the truck who was the boss. Today's trucks are a lot more women friendly because women are an integral part of the trucking scene. The cab designs are surely based on the input of women and the interiors are NOT as garish!

@@TruckingTogether Yes I see that on a daily basis. Training and knowledge a lot of times is missing, too. No chrome and all the crap is good when a driver does not know not to turn the foglights on when there is no fog. They honestly believe these are daylight driving lights. And always drive with your lights on, no matter the weather conditions. Just two of those things where it starts and one should know I order to really drive its truck. Be safe put there.

Alice, can you have Martin explain the engine retarder on Tiny? Fancy has Jake's, but with the "Automated " Trans on Tiny it has to be different. Thanks, Richard.

It’s the same. Cummins uses a engine brake aka Jake brake.
