We pit the Nissan Pathfinder Rock Creek against the new Kia Telluride X-Line to see which we prefer. Both Rock Creek and X-Line add some utility and off-road gear, but is either any good? Nissan also pushes its Rock Creek as a mid-trim model, while Kia has the Telluride sit firmly in luxury territory in Canada. So how do the prices stack up between the Pathfinder and Telluride? Find out in the video.

I’m siding with the Telluride Prestige Pro X. I am a family man my wife our 4 month old son and expecting another one next year. So certain priorities are in place for me. #1 mama got to be happy in it. #2 need a three row that can multitask and provide a balanced of comfort, power and practicality with a AWD platform. #3 longevity, and growth, we plan on keeping this 3rd row vehicle for a long time so as our family grows we have the room. We also considered a minivan, however minivans sit too low for my wife so that goes out the window. I live in Texas where it gets very hot n humid. So keeping the wife cool is priority #1. The Ventilated seats for the hot days would be a must. Telluride has them in the first and second row. The amount of charging ports of the seats, interior layout, design and features feels like an european luxury car. The steering wheel is very ergonomic, confident and smooth. I like the linear power of the engine. Towing 5,000 is plenty for me, mainly pulling lawn equipment or a sports car. And most importantly is my pregnant wife feels very comfortable in both the front and second rows. It passes her cupholder tests and it’s pretty easy getting in and out of the third row. I’m 6ft and I can sit behind myself very comfortably. And same on the third row. Car seats are very easy to get in the second and third row. Telluride to me feels more balanced. If I want to go rock climbing or serious off-road would consider neither. Driving it was not cumbersome or felt ridged. It feels natural and very confident. The ergonomics is perfect for us.

I wish my experience with the Telluride was a positive one. I traded in my 2017 Pathfinder for a 2021 Telluride because it was everybody’s recommendation and a couple months down the road I started having issues with the screen and the camera and at 12k I started having issues with the transmission. I love the space and how the Telluride looks but I will never get another Kia product again.

Good job using real world items like baby seats and the blue box which is a lot better than rattling off stats. That area behind the third row in the Nissan being plastic on the floor and seat backs is very nice vs the carpet on the Kia

My wife drives a 22 Pathfinder SL 4WD. Very nice looking and riding vehicle. Super comfortable on long trips. However, it’s about as far from an off-roader as you can get. Slapping on some goofy wheels, tires and black cladding doesn’t change that. Nice video though as usual.

The one thing that I do like is that the drive modes do actually work. Throw it in eco and it locks it in 2wd unless you really start slipping. Throw it in snow, and it locks it at 50/50 split and cuts your throttle so you have much finer control over how much power you're putting down.

Here's a real world experience that I posted on another video about these disgraces to the pathfinder name. What a piece of junk! No ground clearance even with that massive .6 in lift, very little articulation, almost a negative approach angle, pretty much useless except on a dirt road, ok you did manage to ride over 50ft of small rocks. Last spring i rebuilt an 02 pathy with a manual 5sp and added upgrades for even more offroad capability. Recently took it in to a local dealer to replace a recalled airbag. A salesman came over and says it looks great, can see I go offroad, and he can give me a great trade in for one of those rock creek mallfinders. I said forget it, that thing couldnt even run the easy trails that a couple miles away from the dealership. The guy says oh you would be surprised with what this thing can do so i said prove it. He says ok, we have some obstacles in a lot down the road, I assume something like in this video. I laughed and asked what some 6in speed bumps? I said follow me to the trails and if it can handle it I would give it some consideration. After some hmms and haass and assurances that there wasnt any mud around he finally agreed and off we went. Within a couple min the saleman in the mallfinder finds himself high centered on a track with ruts about 9in deep. He didnt want to run on the side and possibly scratch the doors. I jumped off the trail, ran through some brush/cactus (I'm in AZ), pulled up next to the guy, and sarcastically asked if he was having an issue and needed some help, i told him not to worry as I carry tow straps. The guy sheepishly says he thinks he can back it out and roughed up some undercarriage components as he forces the thing out in reverse. Back at the start of the rut trail I tell the guy he better head back as this is the only entry road for a few miles and he agreed. I said I think I'll keep my real pathy and since i was there was gonna go try to find some mud. The guy didn't say another word. The thing looks nice enough, has strong towing capacity, but otherwise cant handle much more than a speed bump.

@@digitalmdrealmd9124 you don’t buy a Pathfinder if you want a real off road capable car. This Rock Creek is just off road marketing. Same with any Palisade or Telluride. These are not real off-roaders. One has to be very naive to believe that. It’s sad that these companies advertise these SUV’s as off road capable vehicles. With that said, Nissan offers cars that are a really off road capable, like the Frontier or the the Armada.

@@jz7551 Thats exactly why I rebuilt my 02, the R50 platform was the last Pathfinder to have true off road capability. While the Armada is a rugged body on frame vehicle, it is just too big and unwieldy on the trail, much like the R51 Pathfinder platform

Great video! I've got the 2021 Telluride EX (AWD, tow package, self-leveling shocks, Nightfall edition)...that's a mouthful... I drove my Kia round-trip between Tamp and Seattle (Aug/Sept 2022), and the seats were great. They're firm, but not stiff. The ventilated/heated seats were great as well. I'm 5'11, 180lbs, and decided to sleep in the Kia using my camping gear for the 7 nights I was on the road. NO REGRETS! The foam-filled voids inside the car's panels kept it super quiet the entire drive, as well as for sleeping at rest areas. I put down row 2 and 3 for sleeping, and had clearance at head and toe - touching nothing, plenty of room to toss and turn and stretch out, as well as store my duffle bags, water, other gear, etc.. I had my portable fridge plugged into my Jackery, and the Jackery plugged into the DC outlet in the back, so that daisy chain allowed my fridge to run 24-7, without running the car during sleeping - or using the car battery. The car shuts off the DC in the back when the motor's off, and the jackery powers the fridge. By morning, the jackery needs charging, so once the car starts, that DC outlet fires up and starts charging the Jackery while I drive. Perfect. On the way back from Seattle, I towed a 5x8 enclosed U-Haul, with gross weight of just under 2,000 lbs. I really didn't notice it behind me. No loss in power, handling, or braing. High altitude made a difference once in a while, as the car wanted more oxygen. Normal for my sea-level Florida car! The ONLY reason I would have gone for the Pathfinder is for the 6k towing, but no way would I trade my Telluride for it- not worth the money/tradeoff; I'd rather go with with a truck if I had to.

Not sure if you put the Telluride's drive mode into "Sport," but if you do, it does noticeably improve throttle response and revs the engine higher before shifting, both of which help improve acceleration. Most of the time "Comfort" is just fine for me though.

Great title! Definitely two poser off-roaders. There was a time when the Pathfinder was a pretty serious vehicle, comparable to a 4runner, or almost. Ever since they went unibody and tried to make the Pathfinder upscale, the reliability and capability went straight down the toilet. They had the Xterra for a while, but they didn't sell enough to keep it around ( too niche?). The Telluride seems to be a media darling, well appointed, but also shows up at the very bottom of some recent "least reliable" lists (CR, I think). Good on you, Steven, for not getting caught up in the hype! Keep it up!

I was glad you compared third row seating space, as in my opinion it explains why the blue bin had less space behind the seats in the Pathfinder, they give a couple extra inches to leg room. We purchased a Pathfinder SL 2 days ago. My interior is quite beautiful. I am not a fan of the shifter as you pointed out, I also am concerned about the emergency parking. I'm going to further investigate, if the battery shuts off will it stay in emergency parking? I drove the Rock Creek, it was to rugged for my living/lifestyle, I drove two Tellurides and they were a bit loud, however my friend has a Kia Telluride and she loves it, not sure which one but it's definitely the best or next to the best 2022 model. I also like the turning radius on my Pathfinder, it makes much tighter turns vs. the Rogue. My hope is the Pathfinder will last for years like my Rogue has lasted without anything more than regular upkeep for the miles, and it has 180,000 miles doing regular maintenance really helps the preservation, same this with my Toyota van I had 190,000 miles and it only ever needed the things you would expect to replace for the miles. Thanks for showing comparisons!

I think Nissan missed the mark on the new pathfinder. If they just refreshed the vintage look pathfinder and make it rugged and tough looking. They will sell like crazy because Nissan has a price advantage. Instead, they held back and make it just a bit too “family friendly”

@@grattonland XD, then it is too much. At least 1k extra cost. 99% of soccer mom/dads won’t ever know how to use it. Plus the new pathfinder is too long to be a true off-roader anyway… It just need to look tough but doesn’t have to be really tough to satisfy soccer moms/dads

@@RandomUser1668 still considering one. Wife has a Murano, I have a Sierra with a levelling kit. We are switching to one vehicle. She won’t drive a truck and I need at least 5000 lbs towing capacity. So Pathfinder is the compromise. I’d love low range when pulling a loaded trailer up the hill at the cottage. More for control than power. Slow and steady is my motto

We love our pathfinder. Very comfortable on long trips. Kia has more tech. Although I never got to try there self driving tech I do love the pro pilot partial self driving on our Nissan. It’s great for long boring interstate driving. The camera system is better on the Kia. More plush. And even a little more quiet then the Nissan. But …. A 9-10,000 dollar markup over the Nissan isn’t in my book worth it. 1000 pound more towing on the Nissan. Kia engines catching fire like crazy. Car garages in the cities not allowing the Kias in them because of it. Kias headlight complaints all over their forums. Makes me glad I bought the Nissan even more.

From most angles, I prefer the styling of the Kia, but for the money, it would be hard to justify spending the extra for it over the Pathfinder. I do think the Pathfinder kind of looks more like a minivan, or at least more bloated. Nissan really needs to come out with a new version of the Xterra based on the Frontier. That would probably help get enthusiasts interested in Nissan again.

I really do like the pathfinder rock creek. In defense of the pathfinders shifter it does have the indicator light right beside whichever gear you have selected so yes u will build muscle memory as with anything but the visual cues are instant. One thing id love to see is a better set of tires on each. If you are going to advertise these trim packages as more off road friendly the tires should match that sentiment.
