Got a 24 trd off road premium 3 months ago, so glad i did!! Unless i crash n burn, should be set for life. Absolutely appreciate the simplicity & reliability, very sad to see toyota doing what they are doing with quality these days!!!! I guess nothing stays the same. I have a 98 Tacoma that has the same quality & reliability as the 24 4 runner & i don't care what anybody says, in my opinion, Toyota should just keep building these types of vehicles, they last forever if u take care of them & hard working people deserve an opportunity to purchase a good quality item like this that lasts, it seems our society has totally lost that, very frustrating & sad!!

60k (USD) is likely a real cash cow for a vehicle that's required little to no P&D over the past 10 years or so. I bet they can make these for $30-ish thousand, and are riding the wave caused by the other manufacturers and their over zealous MSRP increases. My wife loves her '18 that we got for $33k brand new. Seems like a steal now.

I just got a 24 2wd limited. I need 4wd like I need another hole in my head. My last vehicle was a 4wd Cherokee with a 4-cylinder turbo. I'm a wimp, so only went off roading twice in it and was scared of getting stuck both times. The RWD 4Runner is perfect for me, but I'm glad that his cousins can handle the mud.

You should do reviews on the model that is mostly available, the TRD Off Road. Locally the TRD Pro is priced too high, and low volume (at least in Canada). In 2022, I could’ve ordered a TRD Pro and waited at least 8-12 months, or a TRD Off Road for $10K less and wait 4-6 months.

Can't beat the Japanese made vehicles, the Tex/Mex vehicles are all problem ridden. Sure the 4 runner has bad fuel economy but its bullet proof. I'd wait 5 years on the new ones to let Toyota get the bugs out. What I want is that new transmission the new ones have on my 2023. Wish it would hook up to my tried and true v6, now that would be awesome..

Toyota has never played the "top numbers" game vs jeep and Bronco. Wrangler and Bronco are better on paper, and probably in a manufacturer automotive press off-road adventure, but probably not in your driveway. If all you do is drive it brand new, but not pay for upkeep and repairs as it ages, wrangler and Bronco may seem much better than the old 4Runner. Great video TK!

Luckily Toyota doesn’t run their business on everyone’s opinion. The one thing they know is the public will buy what they put out there, even if the introductory year is a rough one. 5th gen didn’t start off well in sales and it was not without issues….oh yeah, everyone was poised that the V8 wasn’t an option anymore. Hmmm…..look at how many people bought the only engine optioned V6??!! Now, here we go again, a 4 cylinder turbo…..guess what Toyota knows, we will buy it. At the end of the day, buy what you want, it’s your money…..nothing wrong with the 5th gen, and regardless of the first year of the 6th gen, there will be plenty of buyers.

Last week I dumped my 24 Tundra for this exact 4Runner and couldn’t be happier. Although there was a lot I liked about the Tundra I just didn’t feel confident with the reliability and longevity of the engine. Although mine wasn’t under recall yet, I’m sure that will be coming to all the 22,23, & 24 Tundras. I actually use my 4 WD vehicles on ocean beaches and on deep woods logging trails and would be screwed if my engine blew up. On another note the build quality of this 4Runner blows the build quality of the new Tundras and Tacomas away. My guess is the 6th gen 4Runner will also suffer in the build quality category as well. Yes it will be built in Japan but Toyota seems to have ‘cheaped out’ on all components. The plastics in the new Tundra couldn’t be any cheaper or thinner. The plastic which formed the base of my driver seat on the Tundra cracked twice and I weigh less than 200 lbs., come on Toyota, really? 🤦‍♂️

The 4Runner is somewhat in a class by itself. Meaning, it doesn't do any one thing great, but does a lot of things really good. It is also a vehicle that if you keep up on maintenance could legitimately last your lifetime and/or pass down to your kids or grandkids. I'm right under 50 years old and I can't stand the 14" computer screens and computer gauge clusters that come on new cars. I don't want or need any of that crap. I'll take reliability and a vehicle that can go anywhere I need to go on and off road and I know it's going to get me home at the end of the day. If I could buy the new 6th gen for 10K less than the current 5th gen I'd still buy the 5th gen. I'm serious.

The 4Runner was always a vehicle that I wanted. I picked up a 23 TRD Off Road a month ago and despite the horrible fuel economy and anemic powertrain it's everything I wanted it to be. as a '17 TRD Off Road owner, your description of the powertrain is sadly dead on. I love the KDSS, the roll down rear window, but there are times where the engine/transmission make think '80s under-powered econobox and I am torn recommending it. Towing ? Painful choice. Need to pass someone while loaded for back country travel ? Plan it well. Will I change this reliable beast ? Hard to consider given the alternatives. I do recommend that people treat the undercarriage, say with lanolin, if you live in the salt belt. And if you have a TRD Off Road, exercise the 4L mechanism as often as you can on loose surface, otherwise it gets cranky. My transmission often won't get out of 4L in the normal manner, needing to stop in neutral, power off and then shift. When asked, I always mention how I wish the V8 had been an option on the 4Runner, my gut says it was built and sized for the larger engine.

@@stephanematis Your description is exactly why this and other Toyotas are such great trucks. The 4.0 is built for 385 hp but is tuned to 278. This is enough tech already, new vehicles’ techs are ridiculous, need to go to school to learn them all😅😂

I tend to be decisive but I'm planted squarely on the fence between the 2024 and 2025 4Runners. I've owned a couple of 4Runners (including a truly awful 4 cylinder in the early 1990's). I would wait for the 25 if it wasn't for the 4 cylinder even though it is a turbo. I'm thinking of longevity which is hard to imagine anywhere close to 5th Gen.

The 5th gen will hold its value like gold in the years to come. The last of the N/A, Japan-made Toyota Truck.

Great review as always. Refreshing video. Lots of channels are showing Tundra this and Taco that. A little oversatuated with bad news and model hoopla. This video begs the question of purists and loyalists and reliability versus buyers diving into the unknown. I don't think people will regret the choice if they buy this model right now. Keep up the great work TK

I forget I have 5 gears because the transmission doesn’t draw attention to itself. Hop in a friends 9 or 10 speed and there’s nothing but clunks and lurches.

It would be nice to have at least an extra gear to help with the gear ratios, especially when merging into ongoing traffic. When you press on the gas and expect it to downshift to give you more power, but it doesn’t, because it only has 5 gears lol.

The Car Care Nut loves the 5 speed transmission. States it is very smooth and reliable.

Toyota has been doing some weird things lately... 1) the 5th gen 4Runner has more cargo space than the new Sequoia (by almost 3 cubic feet when all rear seats are folded down in both). 2) the styling of the new Tacoma is peak 1990s plastic transformer knockoff...the kind of thing you'd find on a messy toy isle at your local Kmart store. Can't believe I'm saying this, but for the first time ever, the Chevy Colorado is by far the best looking mid-sized truck in NA. 3) that "crease" on the sides of new Toyota's looks like the vehicle has already been t-boned. I get that BMW and Hyundai are pioneering that hip pre-crashed look, like brand new already ripped and worn jeans, or patina paint jobs), but Toyota needs to smooth some of these vehicles out. 5) the styling of the 6th gen 4Runner looks "thrown together at the last minute"...almost like the Land Cruiser was maybe supposed to replace the 4Runner until Toyota realized how crazy of a mistake that would be for their bank account. The front end is just "Tacoma" and the rear is just a 5th gen with new trim pieces to make it fit...they could have named it a "TacoRunner". 6) weird engine (Tundra) and transmission (Tacoma) issues that are just unlike Toyota to do...thankfully, unlike other manufacturers, Toyota is rushing to fix things instead of gaslighting customers (mostly, I think). I don't for one second think this is the end of all things Toyota, but I absolutely won't be rushing out to get any of these new vehicles anytime soon. My 5th gen 4Runner and me will sit this one out.

I'd sooner call the Jeep Grand Cherokee a competitor of the 4runner, not the wrangler.

I’ve been building Toyota trucks for 15 years out here in Texas. Knowing what I seen from Toyota the last few years I knew I had to purchase this! 8/1/24 I bought this exact model at invoice plus 5625 down payment. My wife is in love with this beast and do not regret it one bit!
