This was a brilliant interview, and probably one of the more intelligent explanations I've heard. Mr. Saran's analysis is spot on, but I'm wondering if India could go just one step further. My own sense is that if there is one - just one - more threat against and Indian diplomat, India should shut down one of the consulates, say, Vancouver, and bring the diplomats back to safety. Of course, that, then, opens the door to reducing Canadian diplomatic staff still further, based on parity. As Mr. Saran mentioned, the other five eyes countries aren't blameless in this either, but India's relationships with them are far deeper than with Canada. So, one way to make an impression would be to completely ostracize Canada, cut whatever minimal ties there are, invalidate all OCIs for Canadians passport holders and prohibit Canadian citizens from entering India. Yes, the pain will be felt by both countries, but it will be minimal - along the lines of the reaction to a Covid shot, compared to getting Covid.
