I can't believe I'm commenting on this, but you kind of missed EVERYTHING about the joke. The joke was about racial profiling, because Jimmy said that John looked like a good liar, and he joked "is it because I'm English?", which is funny because white English people are basically the group who invented racial profiling in order to assert their cultural and ethnic dominion over like 3/4 of the globe, so he's basically calling attention to how absurd racial profiling is generally, because of the fact that it basically doesn't affect him negatively even if it should. Because it's also a critique of English empire: the English did cheat the world out of most of their resources - they are cheats, but of course it wouldn't have been middling people like John's ancestors who ran anything, so it's also a laugh about class. But even more so, it's a joke about American's perceptions of Britishness, informed as they are by Dickens, the royals and films like Mary Poppins, who famously flew into London town on an umbrella like a domestic miracle worker, which is in itself a parody of late-Victorian and Edwardian ladies' manuals on household management. It's not lost that in this context Oliver is also proposing himself as a domestic servant in the royal household in a sort of Mary Poppins-esque fashion (as a cook), but he is apparently not convincingly Mary Poppinsesque enough to the Americans, which he pretends to be shocked by and which is also quite a statement on how British class history has been sanitised and glamourised by Hollywood. After all, who do they think works at Buckingham Palace cooking eggs other than young people during their summer break? The hilarious accident is the matter of the feta cheese. It appears that John offers it up kind of unthinkingly and when Jimmy and Jennifer looked genuinely appalled by the idea of the Queen eating something common like feta, it dawns on him that the Queen's husband is actually Greek so this is even more hilarious. If being clever and constructing quippy jokes with multiple layers of meaning is moronic, than up is down and left is right.
