When Johnny Clarke and Lisa Straub were killed inside a Holland home in true crime brutal murders on Jan. 30, 2011, it shocked the community.
It was a brutal crime - a young couple killed by suffocation - bags placed over their heads, held in place by duct tape wrapped around their necks.
That method of killing simply doesn't happen in Toledo. And the case is open, with sets of unknown crime scene DNA still unidentified.
"That specific of an MO, we have not had any cases like that," Capt. Matt Luettke of the Lucas County Sheriff's Department said.
If you know any information about this case, please call CrimeStoppers at 419-255-1111 or the detective's bureau at 419-213-4917. Or reach out to Brian Dugger at bdugger@wtol.com.

My biggest concern with Eric Yingling’s testimony is that it was all previously known. Prosecutors indicated that he knew unknown information about Iraqi dinars in the home. But that information was released on a search warrant days after the killings. The detective incorrectly said on the state that it was not public knowledge. - Brian Dugger

@K Spring rude much? Actually that is absolutely correct. I have walked a lot in my life and had cigarette butts stick on the treads of my sneakers more than once over the years. Who knows whose DNA that was. So if all they have is one cig butt it's most definitely not enough to convict someone of double murder and put them away for life. Not to mention in the garage? Meaning a door that is wide open when it's sometimes windy and can get blown inside. To me this is most definitely not enough. And also several sets of DNA and yelling at two people before the phone cut out?? It's not enough to say definitively at all. I don't believe inmates cuz they lie for extra ramen noodles so no, gotta have more, and they all said one cig butt was it....nope. I pray that something of yours never ends up at a crime scene...you will be singing a different tune.

This story is so badly told, very confusing altogether with its fragments of info, inconsistent timeline and lots of repetition. The cigarette butt could have been found anywhere and been deliberately left there to throw the investigation off track so the DNA on the duct tape would be more reliable. I don’t feel like the police have properly followed up on that. If either of those kids were mine I’d feel very frustrated with the inadequacy of the investigation, and devastated that whoever did it is still out there.

Any smoker or ex- smoker would find the placement of that cigarette butt strange. You don't carry around a cigarette butts once they have been put out. You get rid of them at the time and never on the floor inside when it's been put out somewhere else. Doesn't make sense. I'm not supporting this conviction. One thing that bothers me: When police interrogate a suspect, it seems that it's legal to lie to them to try and get them to confess or slip up, but the detective in this case lied to a witness - not charged or even arrested - about there being video at the bar that night showing she wasn't there when she said she was. That seems crooked, and it makes me suspicious of the whole investigation. I'm not particularly comfortable with the testimony of the "jailhouse snitch", either..... especially since he was paid a considerable amount of money right after the conviction. I think this case stinks.
@informanti
@informanti 3 жыл бұрын
In a lot of cases, lying to someone who's being interrogated can be a effective tool. In this instance however, it doesn't really accomplish anything as it's easy to prove otherwise. There are also times when using lies can be very detrimental to a case, sometimes being the starting line to a false confession where an innocent person feels like the police doesn't believe them and aren't interested in the truth. Doubt can creep into the mind and unfortunately, people with diminished mental capacities, will start to believe the lies. Feeling trapped, they reach the uncomfortable conclusion that the only way to end the harassment, is to accept the lies as truth.

Yes, the detective lying to Madrid about there being video from the bar was a legal tactic, but concerning to us. I had a recent conversation with her and she is still adamant that they were at the bar. She was mistaken about saying they went to a hotel that night. Even Sam said she was wrong about that, but she was interviewed months later. Sam told me that they HAVE gone to that hotel at other times. - Brian Dugger

@Hip Shooter She's probably thinking of GEDMatch. and even that nowadays you have to voluntarily opt-in to allow law enforcement access. I know because I've done it. If I happen to be related to a wanted murderer or John/Jane Doe, I guess they'll easily identify them. Hopefully that person is never me.. haha

Yes, the county has the state lab run traditional DNA testing. But more advanced DNA testing, such as familial, would need to be done by a private lab. It can certainly be done with some of the samples. However, some of the DNA was completely consumed by the original testing. - Brian Dugger

Another thing about cigarettes you can tell if they were butted out or if they were just sat down and burned away because cigarettes don’t burn down all the way if you’re not smoking them. If it was thrown there an allowed to burn for a bit they would be a burn mark on the floor. Know if it was butted out or allowed to burn out in an ashtray and somebody grabbed it and planted it there, it would be easy to tell.

@Hip Shooter Lmfao. Simply writing “this” as a comment shows that I’m clueless?! Wow. Aren’t you just the smartest? Sorry, troII, but I am informed on the topic. Just because there are protocols that need to be abided by does not mean that it can’t be done. In fact, I’ve seen a case covered before that used a private DNA database to solve a crime. It seems that you are projecting about who is the clueless one here, but that’s what trolls do!

I was on the phone with his mother, Maytee that night. She said I should go check on Johnny, and I agreed. She blew it off and said it's OK I'm sure he is fine. We continued talking for another hour or so. I also know the father had a drug problem and was taking steroids. Too many WWE stars killed their own family high on cocaine and steroids. I think matters a fact I know Lisa's parents were drug dealers and Johnny was experimenting with cocaine and heroin. His mother told me so. I think, and this is just my theory, his father in a steroid rage went there to scare him straight and took it too far. Now I live in Allentown Pa and they live in Ohio but I have been online friends with his mother Maytee for well over 25 years. I even sent her $200 to help her with the burial cost. After over 25 years of friendship, she blocked me on Facebook tonight because I had a dream about Johnny and him telling me that he tries to go to her in her dreams but she is so wrapped up in her own grief that maybe if I could tell her about my dream and help her. In my dream, Maytee was there and Johhny said look she is right here in front of me, and she can't even see me. Me personally I think she knows the father killed them and this is why she is so torn apart because she knows the truth but if she tells it she will lose her husband as well. He was already in jail for 2 years for shooting at a kid who he thought knew the truth. I love her and I wish I could take her pain away but the only one that can help Maytee is Maytee.

@@kimgallagher1815 Agreed the father was very jealous of the relationship that Johnny & his mother Maytee had, that had an incestual relationship. Add in the father's cocaine and steroid addiction and yes agreed it's sick and so were both of Johnnys parents. Lisa's parents were not drug dealing addicts like John Sr is. You speak of things that you know knowing about! How many fake profiles are you gonna make to cover up the murder of your son Maytee?
