My great grandfather was killed bootlegging in June of 1924, most likely in the scenario you outlined: hijackers taking the booze he was moving. The Adirondacks was full of bootleggers and rumrunners then, both homegrown and mob related, especially the Irish mob. The odds that this was prohibition related, whether King or not, are high. And few locals supported prohibition, even if the men were well-liked, it wasn't easy to find folks to witness related crime.
