The podcast "I Was There Too" interviewed the actress playing Boudreaux and she said McConaughey was super focused into his role as Rust so he'd keep a stone face, even between takes. However she said he was super supportive and helpful to get her character right since she never acted in anything big before. He stayed and went over notes with her and never left for his trailer despite being a big star. Harrelson was also very helpful too and was prone to joking around between takes with her. Just some fun facts from behind the scenes.

I've thought that same thing so many times over the last 7+ years and everytime I refer someone to this series i tell em "i envy you"...it's too bad season 2&3 couldn't live up to the masterpiece that's season 1..that's the problem with starting out with an amazing success like this u spend so much time afterwards tryin to live up to it whereas some shows or movie series start out average or plain terrible and get better over time.. honestly if i was a writer or director etc i think I'd take the latter..it's sad when we get genius like this or District 9 and then the creator just can't live up to it in later installments...but i will say again that while i didn't.much like season 2 on first watch..mostly cuz of how amazing this season is ...when i watched season 2 a second time it really is Good just not amazing and Season 3 was solid as well ..i need to watch it a second time though and this season man i really can't give enough praise to it..my only issue was how it ended but that may have more to do with me not wanting to say goodbye to these characters and the amazing louisiana setting..i been loving Woody and Matt for decades but this took them to a whole other realm for me.. sorry to yap

@@antoniokastrocarlisledemel6617 i totally understand what your saying bro , Season 1 is perfect , i mean everything about it is amazing. the directing , the score, the themes throughout , the characters and of course the writing. i find season 2 and 3 to be lacking in one of those areas the most being the characters . i just didint real care for the characters. i mean whenever mathew or woody was on camera they had my full attention i was hooked on what they would say or do next. i often come back to season 1 atleast once every few months.

For Rust, losing a single child was enough to upend his life entirely, destroying the man he once was. This woman killed three of hers. His ice cold condemnation is completely genuine.
@drgonzo3052 жыл бұрын
"if you get the chance.... You should kill yourself" that is the fucking coldest line ever in film. The actresses reaction to it is perfect too, the disbelief at what she just heard and the realization that her life as she knew it just ended. Perfectly played by both, McConaughey playing the predatory supportive role and her playing the naive monster.
@TheGrrson2 жыл бұрын
The "if you get the chance" part is a real stinger b/c he's reminding her that soon she will lose all of her freedom in prison and won't even have control over her own body, much less her ability to hurt herself. He's just piling on how desperate her situation is about to get. It's some biblical-level shit.

Could a cop even say that nowadays? I have a feeling that it would somehow jeopardize the entire confession in the court. At least her lawyer would try to use that against it. Idk, I feel like a good criminal attorney would be able to run wild on a comment like that on 2022z

What’s particularly cold about it is that Rust isn’t saying it as an emotional response to her crime. It’s his genuine, logical advice. What’s even worse is that the woman, for a split second, thinks that he’s about to give her a slither of hope. A vital piece of information that could be something to hold onto in her perilous situation. Instead he’s just saying “you’re so f*cked your only sensible option here is to end your life”

People think that Rust is giving her indifferent advice, that he’s not angry just trying to tell her her best option. I think they’re wrong. Rust shows throughout the series to have strong emotions, especially when it comes to children being hurt (what landed him as an undercover agent for years). Being stoic doesn’t mean not having emotions, it means having strong control over your emotions. I think Rust hates this women and thinks she’s vile. He wants her to die by her own hand in shame instead of continuing to draw breath on the state’s dime.
@bencarlson4300 Жыл бұрын
I interpreted Rust’s flat personality and nihilism as his way of moving beyond his child’s death. It’s a coping mechanism. If Rust had not had that happen, he would probably be pretty similar to Marty and most other cops.

Expressing anger would give her an excuse to feel victimized, which she loves. He wouldn't give her the satisfaction. Instead, he reveals that other people are also not going to see her as the victim. As to whether he does this out of anger or pity or indifference, I assume the filmmakers knew better than to decide.

Matthew McConnaighey's acting is out of this world. The whispers, the warmth he gives her, the way this incident excavates his deepest wound but he remains calm and ready as a hawk on the hunt....waiting for the breaking point. And then...when his victim is most vulnerable he attacks and kills with the coldest line in all series. "If you get the chance you should kill yourself!. My god!!! He can be so cruel. Such an amazing character

This is his best acting. There are other good ones like Dallas buyers club but this one is his best. Whoever the writer is nailed it and should be remembered for this season.

When Rust asks Charmaine if she's ever heard of Munchausen by proxy and Charmaine says no, he sees something in her eyes that makes him push into the sleep apnea machine report. It gives me the willies.

Rust says in another scene that death created time so it could watch the things it created, die. He then says how he believes people don't actually die, that they are recycled back in to the same life eternally over and over. I think he genuinely believes this and thinks that subconsciously humans get better from their mistakes, which sounds nice but also terrifying due to the fact it's a really far out theory and he's not joking when he advised her to kill herself.

Because he's staring in front of someone who killed their own children on purpose for attention. Someone who had a chance to raise their children and absolutely squandered that, while he suffers knowing that his chance was taken from him so horrifically. He lost his daughter, who he loved deeply and wanted to protect so much, by accident and it devasted him. She killed her kids and it only hit her when she was hit with concrete evidence and a detective coldly and personally telling them what essentially comes across as "fucking kill yourself, you're too far gone".

Until I've seen true detective I always thought making a good show is only about having a great story but a great story stand and falls with the ones who bring it to live and fuck me.... Harrelson and McConaughey nailed it. That must be the kind of characters Pizzolatto had in mind when he wrote it.
@rustcohle9267 Жыл бұрын
As soon as Rust said that line he took a time staring at her just to see her face dismantle into a confused and hopeless person and let her know that everyone is disgusted by her actions and she wouldnt find any empathy or mercy from them. The show made it clear how much he loved his daughter so people thinking he was actually empathizing with her and giving advice is so stupid. he thinks she is a monster and a waste of space. Better just kill herself, he doesnt care.

this is a real life interrogation technique. the detective conducting the interview lures the person of subject into a false sense of security by relating to them and downplaying their actions, only to swap at the last second and go after them when they believe they can spin the story into something they want.

This show is so masterfully written and acted that you get so heavily invested characters like these, with barely any screen time. Impressed is an understatement, this season plays like a big ass movie instead of a short series.

Only this series (and maybe The Wire) have that rare quality where every single actor to appear onscreen is somehow world class and to the level of the main actors, despite only a handful of minutes of screen time. Likely a testament to the writing, but the casting in this show was astonishing.
