Nino gaggi sorry you feel that about The Wire but IMO it’s the greatest series ever. My list is like this, 1 The Wire 2 Sopranos 3 Breaking Bad. 2 and 3 could go either way they both good. Then True detective season 1 its was best 1st season I’ve witnessed. I didn’t get into the wire until it was on it last season and i didn’t get into Sopranos until it was half way Thur as well. I got into B.B. on season 4. Then I witnessed every episode of TD season 1 it was hella good. GoT is like 5 maybe it could go either way as well Fargo on FX is Pretty good.

I love all the Lovecraftian themes and direct references to Lovecraft. The best of it being that even though there are all these Lovecraft references, it's just people. No beasties in the dark, no great dark powers. It's just us.

Turd Ferguson we're our own unimaginable horror. But actually, while we don't see a monster, we get the allusion to it through the knowledge that there is this cult that worships "the yellow King", who isn't Childress, but an unseen entity who is represented in the mound of skulls and yellow fabric seen in the chamber where Rust fights Childress. It could be speculated that The Yellow King is an otherworldly entity akin to other religious deities, in as much as we mere humans won't see it or know it, and as such it's only as real as our belief in it. This kind of brings into consideration the boundary between cult and religion. We see Tuttle is involved in the cult, but is also a significant church leader. His faith in The Yellow King is stronger than that of the Christian God, as he works continuously, abusing his power within the church to enact cult practices, like the sacrificing of children. This also makes me think of the idea of hidden worlds. What is behind the veil of our existences. Most people experience a life like Marty's, where everything is relatively okay, and we can't see how much shit is really occurring. Rust, in his desire for redemption attempts to pull back the veil, where what he finds is a terrible world hidden beneath the veneer of normality. Conspiracy, prostitution, murder, child sacrifice, abuse, etc. And as the two of them delve deeper into the hidden world behind the veil is the big bad cult with branches in every area of power, and is seemingly unstoppable. It's kind of like a reverse metaphor (if that's a thing?) for the lovecraftian "Great Old Ones", the indescribable horrors that exist beyond the veil of our reality. Honestly, this show is just super fun to speculate, analyze and theorize about.

I must have seen season 1 at least 10 times over the last 4 years. It is an unparalleled truth into the human condition. Rust's philosophy is disturbingly accurate. Yet it's refreshing to see mainstream tv churn out such truth, it's simply unlike any other tv series I've ever seen.

I would advice you not to waste your time by watching season 2. It is a mere shell of its first season.Too many characters , forgettable one-liners, terrible pans and convoluted plot in which nothing really happens at the end.

Season 2 has a larger plot then Season 1. It requires a more careful watch, maybe even several. Offers detailed characters with complex motivations and a harsh struggle against faith. It's harder to follow then Season 1 but I favor it slightly since I relate more to the characters in it.

Season 3 was solid. But I don’t think the Ozarks are anywhere near as unique of a setting as the southern gothic/horror of southern Louisiana. I think it’s because Louisiana is such a peculiar mix of culture that isn’t found anywhere else in the country (e.g. voodoo, Santeria, Mardi Gras, and Cajun culture in general). On the other hand, the Ozarks don’t seem any different than other areas of the Midwest and south, and honestly aren’t too much different than the rural areas of PA and upstate New York.

@@WhitePony-zu5pi Yeah. They didn't use the area as a character like they did with season one and really didn't get into the deep parts of the Ozarks around the Boston Mountains. It's a shame because I have been all through that area and its got so many old abandoned buildings, tiny tiny towns, an abandoned amusement park (Dogpatch USA), old abandoned mines, random decayed structures in the middle of the woods, and just a ton of other creepy feeling areas. I liked season 3. It was better than 2 IMO, and I loved Roland West. He became my second favorite character behind Rust. That said, it is still not on seasons 1's level. That is a high high bar though and we have to be honest about that in watching these so they keep making them.

Season One of True Detective contends as one of the most-compelling dark mystery series ever written for television, and the fullest compliment to the work of H.P. Lovecraft. I'd love for McConaughy and Harrelson to pick their effort back up again for revisiting this genre.

Season 2 was nowhere near as bad as some like to make out, in fact it was bloody brilliant. I still enjoy s1 more, but that doesn;t mean s2 was some kind of dreck. We're talking about an anthology series, so of course there will be some discrepancies of fans between seasons. Like AHS.

In my 62 years of living on Earth, I have lived in California (Fresno, SF & San Diego), Seattle & Portland, NYC for a long time, New Orleans for 8 years, Spain, Portugal, and Mexico - and NO Place I've lived exudes the Decay, and Decadence that New Orleans, and especially the State of Louisiana does! It's fetid, and feels as if the Mississippi delta is basically the "Bowels" of the United States! Almost everything is tainted by a sense of Rot, Death and has a patina of Spiritual Corrosion! My own Morality suffered there, and I found myself doing things that I never thought I'd see myself doing. I'm not that person now, but...NOLA is a hell of a place for a man with any weakness in his moral armor to be in his 30's and 40's. The only Saints there are on the New Orleans NFL team!

I've since, tried to research the case, and found nada. I've always thought, that the guy, had some connections, and it was swept under the rug. But I've never gone so far as Times Picyune, archival research, because Im sure that would turn up something. Anyway, I'm glad you made it out of that awful experience.

just discovered this channel and am blown away; this is superb! And the True Detective, season one was / is a masterpiece of multi-layered storytelling. I could not even watch the second season - they will be hard pressed to ever reach the level of the first. I will watch this review again! And the closing references were also fascinating, to Nietzsche, Jung and the Bible ! Although one might also wonder whether the various and sundry writings of Chambers, Lovecraft, Derleth et al referring to Hastur, the Yellow Sign, King in Yellow etc. , would be of any significance, or just confuse things more - since in this case they seem more a borrowed literary device than solid connections to any of the mythos. Subbed, and looking forward to enjoying more of these excellent works!

Saulnier is not writing it, he is only directing. The set-up is no different than season one or two. Pizzolatto is still writing the entire season as with those, only this time with a little help from David Milch, creator of Deadwood on an episode or two, one of the greatest shows ever made. This season will be great, it has all the ingredients to be, along with a fantastic lead actor cast.

at some point you mentioned that cohle managed to find a purpose, although I think it would be more appropriate to say that he contrived one. some people assume that life does have an intrinsic meaning, hence they strive to find one within things like religion, memorable experiences, altruism etc. however, they usually fail to realize that these things don't possess any inherent value, and as a result they speak of purpose as something than can be discovered. in contrast, cohle has been long aware of the apparent insignificance of the world but is never shown to have given up, even if it's due to his programming, as he states in the first episode. I've come to believe that at some point he probably experienced severe existential angst and the only way of "escaping" from constant existential horror was by incorporating meaning into his life; trying to embrace a fable and in the process exhibiting strong willpower and immense self-discipline, in order to be motivated and relatively mentally healthy instead of living a life in which he would harrowingly long for the moment of his natural death as his body would slowly rot and decay.

I maintain that Season 2 wasn't bad. I knew going in that it would be missing all the things I loved most about Season 1 (setting and characters). It stands alone as a solid season of TV, overshadowed by Season 1. It's especially interesting if you know anything about the Bohemian Grove conspiracy theories.

Rust looked super guilty all the season before they pull this gardener out of their hat. there were tons of circumstancial evidence against him. he even was a spaghetti monster one episode. in others he had a crown like the king.

It would have been stupid if Rust was the killer, it would have ruined his character and go against what was established in the first episode. I agree that the gardener was a little contrived but I suspect that this had more to do with the budget running out and not having anymore time to do a proper build up and introduction of the killer.

I loved this season, and despite all the kvetching I've seen online, it was clearly one of the more captivating offerings of the past few years. While the LA landscape served the story admirably, when I heard that it was originally set in AR, but that the venue had to be changed due to problems working with the locals, I just had to chuckle...if LA can deal with a fictionalized (although not inaccurate) representation of its demons on the screen, couldn't AR, especially if it brought some much-needed cash flow into the state?

I finished season 1 at 2 am and let me tell ya i was stuck staring into the wall for at least half an hour thinking what i just witnessed was a masterpiece and Might possibly never get a tv show this good. This show is deep, it gets you thinking. I like how clever every episode was made, how amazing the performances were by Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson and how much these characters changed over the course of the show. The adrenaline i was getting in last episodes was off the roof. The season concluded Perfectly. This show reminds me of my personal favorite: Se7en.
