My local aquarium lets people feed the rays and they come right up and splash and bounce up and down and try to climb over each other like eager puppies at the edge. Super friendly. I heard someone refer to the little ray against the glass at the end as "haunted ravioli" and it's stuck with me since. 🤣

Fun fact: The largest stingray in the world is the giant freshwater ray, Urogymnus polylepis. It can reach lengths of nearly 4 meters (~13 ft), including the tail, and lives in the rivers of Southeast Asia. Its stinger alone can reach 38 cm (15 in). They're endangered and one of my favorite species of fish because of how weird they are.

" Manta Ray, so big, graceful & gentle" until Mr Irwin got a bit too personal with one... Kind of like when my cat, Mrs. Jett Kitty, is at the vet, as she's known for biting, clawing, pissing & pooping on the veterinarian & her helpers. But from Mrs. Jett's perspective "that horrible vet lady always sticks something up her butt" so she is justified for savaging her...

I went to a beach place (can't remember where) where people were allowed to stand in the shallow water and feed the rays. It was monitored, and we were told to hold the food provided like a fork, so the ray's mouth could suck it up without nibbling on our fingers. They were as excited and hungry as koi fish get about feeding, and you could touch as they flap flap flapped to get in front. Pretty amazing, but in retrospect I know human skin oil is bad for the flap flaps.

Laughing is good. It makes you cough and bring stuff up. One of my favorite nurse tricks. Just tell them jokes until they laugh.

I got to feed some Cow-nosed Rays at a zoo many years ago! We were told to put the piece of fish between our fingers, standing up (like a cigarette) and place our hand on the floor of the pool, palm down. The rays came by and suctioned the piece of fish up and just glided by. It felt like a little vacuum pulling the fish up. They were SO cute!!!!!

Waaay back in 1972, I was living in a school bus for the winter on a beach in Baja. I saw a flock? Herd?group of Manta rays traveling fast, leaping out of the water like dolphins, massive things.. for a kid from Oregon, it was the most awesome thing I had ever seen. Good times.😊😊

Fun fact: Manta rays and it's close relatives are the only vertebrates in the world to have 6 appendages instead of 4. This means that creatures like dragons and griffins and pegasi which are vertebrates with 6 limbs are totally possible to exist.

Unfortunately not. The cephalic lobes aren't truly separate limbs - they're still genetically part of the pectoral fins. They develop as a single structure that moves into two locations instead of developing fully independently. But! That doesn't mean a six-limbed vertebrate CAN'T exist, only that it DOESN'T. There's technically nothing stopping it from happening (besides evolutionary inertia - it's a lot harder to GAIN limbs than it is to lose them). In another hundred million years, who knows?

Manta rays are my favourite animal, they're just so graceful and gentle and intelligent. They'll actually somersault to greet each other and even their favourite divers, they can actually recognize different divers and have certain ones that they grow affectionate towards and attached to. They actually figured out that they actual recognize humans by their eyes, almost like they realized that humans have body markings that change, but noticed that the eyes in their masks don't change. They'll even let drivers ride around on them if they like them enough, they're so cool!

Ampullae of Lorenzini sounds like a really expensive Italian pasta dish, at some sort of Gastrobar lolol “Yess our Ampullae of Lorenzini is our refreshing twist on pasta, lab to table- served in a 12cc lab quality glass ampule sitting inside a lab glove that has been blown up and tied off to preserve the temperature of the pasta, served from the kitchen in a spinning centrifuge to your table” $145

When I was a tiny kid in Little River, Florida (actually, a large canal), my father used to take me for walks to a bridge over the canal where I could see large rays "flying" through the water under my feet, up and down the canal. It was like magic to a pre-schooler. I'm glad I remember that. [ I believe that Little River has been enfolded into Miami now. ]

at work we often get torpedo rays on deck! they're my fave. no barb or stinger at all, but capable of electric shocks! usually if they make it on board our boats, theyre too tired/disoriented to shock and we're pretty safe with gloves and such. theyre so smooth and squishy! i love getting to help them back over the side and into the water!
