Congratulations on the new toys) About a month ago I also became the owner of such filters, only the Askar 6 nm brand. Now my life is hell)) I had to learn Pix)) The kit is not applicable to all objects, but like a child, I re-shoot everything and am happy. The camera is the same as yours, and the GSO telescope is 150/570 mm. It makes it all the more interesting and relevant to see how other owners of such a set of filters process.

At the linear state rather than multiplying by 0.1 for your blues, instead consider additive operations. That way you can get 100% of your strongest signal and "add" maybe 10% or 20% of your weaker signal. Linear has so much headroom when stars removed.

C'est joli tout plein! Un grand merci. This is a really exciting combination of filters indeed. Thaks for sharing your processing method. The outcome is really awesome. As a very interesting coincidence, James Lamb just published his take on the equivalent (but 5nm) set of Antlia dual band filters. Difficult to get a feeling of how they compare because it's different targets, different skies, and different processing methods.

Fantastic thanks! Finally getting 'professional' looking results thanks to this. The only thing I change - and I know many will disagree- is that I only do the noise and blur X's at the very last stage before recombining with the stars. I consistently find that if I do the X's too early in the process, I get blotchy results. In my head it's because 'gaps' where noise has been removed and areas have been sharpened, get exaggerated by stretches and colour balance changes later in the process. In fact I even use the X's on old data processed in other programs years ago and it gives great results there too. Definitely a late stage process for me but happy to have my mind changed!

One thing I've found with the Oiii signal is that it is very susceptible to being wiped out by the 'remove green' process and also the background extraction. BE especially often treats it as noise, so I like that in Graxpert standalone (not the Pix integrated version) you can play with different settings and see what it has removed so ensure that no precious OIII is wiped! Oh and these days I almost never use flat calibration frames. I just keep things very clean to avoid dust donuts. Again, I find that the use of flats often removes the good along with the bad. But that may be more down to my poor flat acquisition than anything else, but either way I don't feel that my images suffer from not using flats.

Its called the pelican nebula because in early photographs thats exactly what it looked like. It still does when imaged with relatively short exposures. But with modern astro imaging equipment far more detail is captured which can swamp the outline of the bird. Also if your image, which was much better than than the SHO image I captured in July I might add, was rotated 90° clockwise the pelican form would stand out more.

This filters look very interesting but I think it's hard to beat (price for performance wise) the Idas NB12, which supposedly works from f1.8 up to slow scopes for about 220€ (EU price). The NB12 has the inconvenience of needing a UV/IR cur filter in addition to the NB12, but the Touptec 585 should come with UV/IR glass infront of the sensor. (And Idas has a great reputation)

I do both mono with LRGB plus NB full slate of filters....as well as OSC with NB filters. The one thing which hasn't been discussed much is negatives of OSC which is 1/2 of the resolution and 1/4 the sensitivity of a mono camera due to the 4 components of the color matrix. i lean towards the versatility of the mono option but moving more towards OSC as the technology evolves rapidly with these filters.

Interesting video. One question- A 80 mm APO costs more than a Bresser 127/1200 mm f9.4 achromat (400$). But which one is better for normal observations (not astrophotography)? I guess that because of the much bigger aperture the 127/1200 mm should be better. I don’t know which one to buy. I would really appreciate your opinion :). Unfortunately there are practically no comparison videos on KZbin between an achromat and APO at similar prices. Thank you!

I have a couple of questions about this methodology as its very unique. I shoot mono @ f/4.8 in Brotle 6-7 and to get something like the pelican I need 6-8 hours per channel which takes forever. Thinking of 8"RASA and using my ZWO mono but this method seems to work well. How much integration time for each filter to get a good S/N. I know you are in a high Bortle as well. Also, how do you like the Newt you have any collimation issues? The RASA is very temperamental to tilt and collimation so concerned about moving from a nice Stellarvue to something that needs tweaking to get good stars.
@CuivTheLazyGeek
@CuivTheLazyGeek Жыл бұрын
You'll still need the same integration time unfortunately, maybe even more because OSC. Also your current filters may not work great with the RASA (and those Altair filters definitely won't), especially Ha and SII because of bandpass shift! You need preshifted filters with the RASA!

Another topic which I haven't seen covered but wonder if anyone has done some research. Some OSC cameras like my ASI 071 have a mono mode you can switch to which goes to BIN 2 to output a mono image using either 2 or 3 of the 4 color matrix channels. I haven't tested this but seems like an option for those that want to have the capability of mono with their OSC camera without buying another mono camera. I recongize there are some negatives but might be an option for some trying to save some money rather than buying another camera.. I know this would double the pixel size but that might be fine with the appropriate focal length scope.

I saw the video with great expectations waiting to see how my man, Cuiv will combine 2xOiii 😊. I think that this is the elephant in the room… After using two dual narrowband filters with OSC, I ended up totally discarding noisy OIII most of the times because I couldn’t raise signal to noise by combining good Oiii with bad Oiii (which was usually the case ) no mater what method I used (pixel math, image integration, I even thought to do batch subframe Oiii integration from the two filters etc etc) … It would be fantastic if an astrophotographer with Cuiv’s great experience (and my favorite KZbinr) experiment on this topic and make some suggestions in a future video. (P.S. I believe that best approach is that a dual narrow band Ha-Oiii and a trusty dedicated SII is the way to go… or not..?) P.S. I use L extreme and hutech Ha-SII) Clear Skies!

I think Antlia has that - I personally am not a fan of getting Hb. As far as I can tell it doesn't really bring anything to the table, being a higher energy transition for hydrogen. Hb signal will be weaker than Ha signal, and they overlap, as any Hb source will always also be an Ha source (the opposite not being necessarily true), meaning that you've already captured everything Hb has to offer by capturing the much stronger Ha...

question - I have an Optolong L-eXtreme Filter which as H-alpha at 656nm and a second 7nm passband centered on OIII near 501nm. It was not cheap (I got it used). Would you suggest pairing this with the Altair Astro SII OIII to gather the SII data and hopefully be able to reconstruct the images as you did with the Altair Astro SII OIII and Altair Astro Ha OIII or do you think that the specs between the Altair and Optolong are too dissimilar to be able to use? The Altair is an expensive filter to add in and doubly so if you end up getting both filters.
@CuivTheLazyGeek
@CuivTheLazyGeek Жыл бұрын
It should work - you'll need to judiciously combine the OIII from the L-eXtreme (which should be noisier, although some Ha makes its way in there, counteracting that) and the Altair! You can also check the Askar Color Magic filters - not sure how good they are, but they do have SII OIII as well

It already exists, but doesn't allow doing SHO palette! Because then SII gets merged into Ha, you can't get them separately. I personally don't quite see the points of such filters, as you're effectively decreasing the SNR of your red channel

So in theory, given how beefy the AM5 is you can do a double-barrel setup (same scope, same everything) with each filter getting their own scope? HMMMMMM that would be the ultimate lazy setup, 33% less work (and gear and cost!) vs a comparable mono setup (ie three scopes). The challenge is ensuring that both cameras are roughtly aligned, so you might need a rotator just to confirm you don't end up with perpendicular cameras. Oh, and a LOT of hard drive space. And given you already know the quirks of your newt, in theory the second time setting one up would be easier?

“When you have personalized filter report, this isn’t going to happen “. Really? I had personalized report for IOptron CEM70. It is supposed to work better than Astrophysics. It was total sheeit. Here is another example, and you will like it. Got QHY camera; mono. NINA told, it is color. Yep, color sensor IN mono camera body. Camera came with all sort of reports. In my hands, only 1 from 4 Chinese product correspond specs. Japanese, European and US products are 100% congruence! This is reality. Example, Astrodon told “our 3nm filters will be as effective with F2.8”. It is exactly how they behave.
@CuivTheLazyGeek
@CuivTheLazyGeek Жыл бұрын
That's comparing apples to oranges. Filters have no mechanical or electronic parts. They have band passes, those bandpasses are measured. You know exactly what you got. End of story.
@CuivTheLazyGeek
@CuivTheLazyGeek Жыл бұрын
Also 3nm filters being as effective at f2.8 is practically impossible. Originally Astrodon as I recall tested and got decent results at F3.3. Didn't quite test at F3 but surmised it would be fine. But even at those speeds, the bandpass shift is affecting the outside of the aperture. Of course you're still getting good results, but outside of the aperture stars gathering mostly LP and degrading SNR.

@@CuivTheLazyGeek The same principal. It is just paper. There is no any evidence that it is correct. They could just write number or draw graph. By the way, they dear send you bad filters. They reputation is on the line. They already checked filters 100 times before sending you for review. Do you think I get the same quality filter? I doubt it. This is a reason you never get filters from Chroma and Astrodon. Mounts from Paramount and Astrophysics. Scopes from AP, Tak and TEC.
