IMPORTANT UPDATE !!! --- THE UK CAA HAS SUSPENDED THE 'C-RATINGS' FOR DRONES IN THE UK UNTIL 2026. THIS LIMITS THE A2 CofC TO 2kg LEGACY AIRCRAFT ONLY FOR NOW. ---!!!
We're not sure where these myths come from, but the A2 Certificate of Competency is required to fly in the A2 Open Category, whether you are flying for leisure or commercially.
Members of associations that have access to an Article 16 exemption, such as members of the British Model Flying Association or British Drone Flyers, can fly either under the Article 16 limits, OR, under the A2 Open Category, depending on the conditions under which they want to fly, but flying in the A2 Open Category will always require an A2 CofC.

Hi, it might have been better had you explained the limitations of Article 16. I hear too many comment that Article 16 allows them to fly anywhere in any ‘built up’ areas and don’t realise that it only allows the operator to fly within a ‘built up area’ if the flying site is within an area which is only used substantially for recreational purposes (for example playing fields or sports pitches). It is a very important point that is not mentioned enough, and in fact is not even included on the BMFA quick start guide”

Hi Brian, it is included in the QSG which states, 'Flying within in a built up area is only permitted subject to the conditions outlined in our guidance'. The guidance states - Flying is permitted 'Within a ‘built up area’ if the flying site is within an area which is only used substantially for recreational purposes (for example playing fields or sports pitches) and a risk assessment has been carried out.'

So in reality, and to clarify, you don't need the A2 C of C provided you always opt to fly with Article 16... Cheers

Indeed. You only need the A2 CofC if you will be flying in the A2 Sub category of the Open Category of CAP722

BMFA certs are better than the A2 CofC IMO

The BMFA Achievement Scheme is a great way to improve your flying and safety for sure, but they will not allow you to fly in the A2 Open Category.
