True Spirit Interview: Teagan Croft & Jessica Watson Talk True Story

ComingSoon Senior Editor Spencer Legacy spoke with True Spirit star Teagan Croft and author Jessica Watson about Netflix's inspirational movie. The movie is now streaming on Netflix.
"When the tenacious young sailor Jessica Watson (Teagan Croft) sets out to be the youngest person to sail solo, non-stop and unassisted around the world, many expect her to fail," reads the film's synopsis. "With the support of her sailing coach and mentor Ben Bryant (Cliff Curtis) and her parents (Josh Lawson and Academy Award winner Anna Paquin), Jessica is determined to accomplish what was thought to be impossible, navigating some of the world’s most challenging stretches of ocean over the course of 210 days."

I just saw this movie last night and I LOVED it. Teagan Croft is absolutely wonderful, as is the entire cast, and Sarah Spillane's skillful direction. 10+

Greetings from South Africa! I think the most endearing thing about Jessica is her humility. She achieved something that few people even dare to dream about and yet she’s so down-to-earth. When you consider that (if I remember correctly) more people have been into space than have sailed solo round the world, it puts in perspective what a great achievement it is. She has every right to be proud, but doesn’t allow that to spoil her as a person. Given the tragedy that she has lived through recently, I feel she is even more to be admired. As a solo adventure motorcyclist (much easier and safer), in 86 000 km of travelling I have discovered just how desperately lonely one can feel sometimes (again scarcely comparable with being alone in the middle of the Atlantic!), so I really take my hat (well, helmet really) off to Jess! As a father many times over, and an old bloke, I think her tenacity and her lovely personality are a credit to her family, but-given that we must take responsibility for ourselves-she is truly to be complimented. I really enjoyed the film. It made me wish I were 56 years younger, so I could try the same thing myself! 🏍☘

So Ben was an amalgamation of people. He was the best character in the movie for me. I did think that the Ben character was made up when during the actual footage of her returning to Sydney Harbour he wasn’t shown. Having him sail past her and out to sea as she was returning in the movie also felt odd to me so hearing Jess say he wasn’t an actual person clears things up.

🌊⛵️ ~ Horrible decision by the parents. According to the Netflix movie she didn’t set her alarms more than once, and that shows she’s not mature enough. It reminds me of my sister who is an absolute airhead. And I also noticed in the movie during the storm she was not wearing any life preservers or submersion suit. If she didn’t have that on then it is gross negligence, it is the highest form of immaturity there is. So I don’t know if it was accurately portrayed in the movie or not, if it was then shame on her, if it wasn’t accurate then shame on the movie. That’s an easy detail to include.c
