Alex Buss I agree but it's an easy thing to say today. Back in the 70's Jimmy Carter was really stabbing law enforcement in the back and the drug situation went way out of control. Then the 80's hit with crack and it looked like the country was coming apart. Reagan had to show that he was tough on crime so some ridiculous measures started being taken like mandatory minimums. Those sentences were a reaction to the times and when kids realized that there whole life could be taken away for the drugs that would fit in one pocket it actually did seem to scare some folks straight.

They reached speeds of 90mph almost hitting several people before hitting the car my step daughter was riding in with her father. The guy was injured and the woman turned around and fled the scene. I can't wrap my head around how two people were facing 20 and 25 years for killing a ten year old and the end result is a 5 year sentence with them serving most of it sitting their sorry asses on their couch.

The 650 grams was the life sentence statute at the time. So that was 12 times more than the limit. Regardless though, the whole case is just so messed up. Just imagine that all of the imprisonment story could just have been staged. Would have been/Might have been one of the most efficient ways to extract him from there without leaving him in danger by some vengeance-seeking corrupt official who might have been after him after several arrests of corrupt officials.
